WATCH: Zola Jesus – ‘Siphon’

Following acclaim from the likes of The Observer and The Sunday Times for her deeply personal and brave latest album Okovi, Wisconsin-based artist Zola Jesus returns to our eyes and ears with a captivating new video.

A touching and honest reaction to the attempted suicide of someone close, ‘Siphon’ is propelled by tribal beats and powerful vocals. Oozing eerie undertones and a sweeping, haunting splendour, it’s a truly spellbinding creation. Directed by Zia Anger (who’s also directed Jenny Hval’s ‘Conceptual Romance), the video is a striking visual accompaniment to this thought-provoking offering. Of the track, Zola Jesus explains:

This song is incredibly literal and personal… It’s hard to talk about or try to explain beyond what’s written in the lyrics.”

And now they’re ready to hit your ears and eyes with an awesome new video.

Propelled by a slow-building tension and eerie undertones, ‘Keeper’ is filled with throbbing bass-lines, raw vocals and raging hooks. Juxtaposing a gritty intensity with uptempo, catchy refrains, it’s a perfect slice of raucous garage-rock with shades of the likes of Manchester’s PINS.

WATCH: Noga Erez – ‘Balkada’

Following incredible singles such as ‘Dance While You Shoot’, Noga Erez has shared another supremely cool offering from her latest Off The Radar album.

With its glitchy, soaring energy, ‘Balkada’ is a truly captivating slice of alt-pop, oozing Erez’s trademark stunning, subtle power that’ll draw you in and leave you completely hooked. Inspired by the relationship between an artist and their audience, and the intimate bond that develops, Erez explains of the track:

While the artist is presented as super-human or divine being and appears to be on the dominant side of the relationship, the opposite is actually true” explains Erez. “The idea of idolization and worship in their obsessive and blind form led us to the commonly used comparison between art and religion – between creativity and creation, and how the two can easily look the same and cross over.”

Watch Erez dance it out against the striking Tel Aviv skyline in the new video for ‘Balkada’ here:

Off The Radar, the latest album from Noga Erez, is out now.

WATCH: Shamir – ‘Straight Boy’

I first fell in love with Shamir upon hearing the frenzied joy of 2014’s ‘On The Regular’, and my love continued to grow when I saw him live at Visions Festival the next year, and he gave me the sweetest of hugs when I told him I was a fan. And my love got even bigger when I watched the video for his new single ‘Straight Boy’.

A massive step away from the uptempo playful pop of his debut, ‘Straight Boy’ lays bare a heart-rending raw emotion, as the moving beauty of Shamir’s vocals and the delicate simplicity of the melody oozes an endearing vulnerability.

Asking what it is about straight boys that makes them act the way they do, Shamir explains of the single:

“(it’s) about how frustrating it was for me to have my whole identity picked apart at a young age just to see straight white men use it as an aesthetic choice. The video quite unequivocally depicts the process of white washing and the repudiation of the queer and people of color who pioneered.”

Watch the new video for ‘Straight Boy’ – a visual representation of the song’s meaning, as Shamir stands in front of a white backdrop, his image gradually being replaced by a white guy:

Shamir’s upcoming new album Revelations is out 3rd November via Father/Daughter Records.
