LISTEN: GIHE on Soho Radio with afromerm (13.11.23)

Tash and Kate were back on Soho Radio’s airwaves playing loads of new music from some of their favourite female, non-binary and LGBTQIA+ artists! Mari offered some of her “musical musings” too. Artists featured on the eclectic playlist included Planningtorock, body/negative, Fraulein, HotWax, paun, LipGloss, Sheherazaad, Dermabrasion, deep tan, Seraphina Simone, SandunesVyva Melinkolya and more.

South London-based sound artist and GIHE fave afromerm also came into the studio to chat about winning an Oram Award – an award which celebrates Women, Trans, Non-Binary and Gender Expansive artists who are pushing the envelope of creativity in sound, music and related technology. She also spoke about her work as part of the NYX Drone Choir and the innovative motion-sensitive instrument she created for her undergraduate project called ‘Juniper’.

Tash and Kate were back on Soho Radio’s airwaves playing loads of new music from some of their favourite female, non-binary and LGBTQIA+ artists! Mari offered some of her “musical musings” too. The pair enthused about the eclectic mix of tracks on the playlist, including 1000 Beasts, Grandmas House, Alewya, Hannu Hu, LibraLibra, Nyokabi Kariũki and more.

They were also joined in the studio by Joni and Karsten aka grunge duo Fraulein. The London-based band spoke about the inspiration behind their recent single ‘Pet’ and chatted about the making of the accompanying video, shot by Lily Doidge. Joni also spoke about leading the guitar workshop for this year’s edition of First Timers Fest, and Tash and Kate validated Karsten’s continued admiration for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Seraphina shared the inspiration behind the tracks that form her latest EP, Milk Teeth, the joy and confidence she’s experienced whilst recording and touring as part of SELF ESTEEM’s band, and she spoke about her excitement for her upcoming performance at Paper Dress Vintage for the Great Escape Festival’s ‘First Fifty’ showcase.

They discussed some of the artists nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize (Nova Twins, Wet Leg and Self Esteem) and laughed their way through Kate’s traumatic Ethel Cain-based nightmare.

Irish songwriter Ailbhe Reddy joined them to talk about her latest single ‘A Mess’, her debut album Personal History and her recent appearances at The Great Escape, Latitude and Visions festival. They also spoke about the Avril Lavigne tribute night Ailbhe hosted in Dublin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Let Go.
