Track Of The Day: VERO – ‘Heather’

A strung out anthem about the distorted nature of lust and the frustrations that come with being the focus of someone else’s romantic fixation, Stockholm-based trio VERO have shared their sultry new single ‘Heather’. Taken from the band’s upcoming debut album Unsoothing Interior, which is set for release on 6th May via PNK SLM, the band toy with the duality of intimacy through moody vocals, lyrical juxtapositions and swirling guitar riffs on their latest track.

Formed of teenage friends Julia Boman, Amanda Eddestål and Clara Gyökeres – who they met whilst DJ’ing disco tunes on the Stockholm nightclub circuit – VERO decided they wanted to move away from the bright lights of nightclub dancefloors and make heavier, louder guitar music together instead. Creating anthems with shades of 90s alternative icons Sonic Youth, VERO’s aim is simple: “write the best fucking songs…have the best energy and show people that we’re having fun.”

The band have showcased their talent for tapping into the right kind of raucous energy with singles ‘Beg!’ and ‘Cupid’, as well revealing a different kind of emotional rawness on ’22:12′. Now, with their latest single ‘Heather’ the trio linger in the shadows of lust an obsession, willingly playing the fool in order to retain the attention of a lover. “The lyrics are about shamelessly wanting to be somebody’s object of desire” the band explain about the track. “You want to be played with, be given commands, amused, but also be told you’re the one. We wrote about this sensation in different ways, describing the good, the bad and the ugly that comes with it.”

Track Of The Day: VERO – ’22:12′

A tender, melancholic offering that laments the feeling of being taken for granted, Stockholm-based trio VERO reveal their softer side on their latest single ‘22.12’. Taken from the band’s upcoming debut album Unsoothing Interior, which is set for release on 6th May via PNK SLM, the track is an urgent, hazy musing that the band have dubbed as their “official cry song.”

Formed of teenage friends Julia Boman & Amanda Eddestål and Clara Gyökeres who they befriended whilst DJ’ing on the Stockholm nightclub circuit, VERO create music inspired by an eclectic range of influences. Their main purpose, aside from creating anthems with shades of 90s alternative icons Sonic Youth, is to challenge the idea of what a modern guitar band is supposed to be. That challenge started with previous singles ‘Beg!’, ‘Cupid’ and a cover of Shame’s ‘Concrete’, but now the trio reveal a different kind of emotional rawness on their new release ’22:12′.

“From the whining, lonely guitar in the intro, to the painful lyrics about leaving the party early and feeling defeated…in a way, the song is an ode to someone else’s happiness, of which you have no part in, and that hurts,” VERO explain about the track. Through yearning vocals, distorted riffs and confessional lyrics, the band tackle feelings of inadequacy and loneliness with grit and grace, providing an aural tonic for those whose bones are also aching with an unrequited love.

WATCH: GHLOW – ‘Not Fit For This’

A visceral blend of distorted guitars, energetic beats and commanding vocals, Russian-Swedish heavy duo GHLOW have shared a video to accompany their latest single ‘Not Fit For This’. Taken from the band’s debut album Slash and Burn, recently released via PNK SLM Recordings, the fast-paced visuals reflect the track’s intense rhythms and jagged riffs.

“’Not Fit For This’ is a manifesto embracing raw power, materializing the energy that grows out of frustration and boredom,” the band explain about the track. “We wanted the video to translate the energy of the music and worked with our amazing friends over at Gonz TV who kept it fast paced and punky.”

LISTEN: GHLOW – ‘Hold On’

A seething slice of electro-punk, Russian-Swedish heavy duo GHLOW have shared their latest single ‘Hold On’. Released via PNKSLM Recordings, the track is taken from the band’s upcoming debut album Slash and Burn, which is set for release on 2nd April.

Formed of multidisciplinary artists Emille de Blanche and Nikolay Evdokimov, GHLOW fuse their lived experiences and passion for genre-blending sounds into their visceral, intense soundscapes. They divide their labour equally; de Blanche handles vocals, bass and the band’s art direction, while Evdokimov takes on on guitar, synths, drum machines and production duties. Through experimentation and a desire to test themselves, the pair trusted their instincts and created an album that burns with raw, ambiguous fury and ‘Hold On’ is the first taste of what’s to come from the record.

Smouldering with angst, the track is an industrial-tinged mix of buzzing synths, caustic beats and de Blanche’s distinctive vocals. “It’s always been about emotion and passion, for me,” says Evdokimov about his process when it comes to making music. “That’s more important to me than genre. I have to understand the outlook of the artist; I need to be burned by it a little bit, almost.” With ‘Hold On’, GHLOW have shared a startling snapshot of their debut album, and we can’t wait to hear it in full.
