GIHE: Albums & EPs Of 2022

After sharing our Tracks Of 2022 earlier this week, the GIHE team want to shine a light on some of the brilliant Albums & EPs that have been released during the last 12 months. These eclectic records resonated with us on many different levels, and we’ll be talking about them long into the future! Huge thanks to all of the bands and artists who submitted music to us this year.  

So, in alphabetical order, here are our top Albums & EPs of 2022 (including multiple Honorable Mentions at the end, because we couldn’t resist…)

ALBUMS

adults – for everything, always
Following the release of their EP The Weekend Was Always Almost Over, back in 2018 and the split Space Armadillo EP with fellow GIHE faves Bitch Hunt in 2020, South London band adults released their debut full length album this year, and I couldn’t have been more happy about it. Showcasing their trademark jangling melodies and buoyant scuzzy energy, and covering topics ranging from the pressures of living in a Capitalist society and mutual aid, to crying on coaches; each track perfectly juxtaposes poignant subject matter with an irresistibly blissful, catchy musicality. I just can’t get enough of adults’ fuzzy, frenetic drive, and was happy to be able to catch them live twice this year. First, supporting Charmpit at their last ever gig that we hosted back in July, and then at their own album launch at new favourite venue The Cavendish Arms last month.

Bad Sidekick – Daily Lottery
Formed of Cooper Rose, Robbie Jenner, Joe Blount and John Blount, Bad Sidekick create alt-rock anthems inspired by the nuances of everyday life. Based between London, Leeds and Bristol, the band released their debut album Daily Lottery this year, and it quickly became a GIHE favourite. Full of gritty riffs, sardonic wit and Cooper’s charming Leeds/Bristolian intonation, the record covers everything from the grind of daily existence (‘Daily Lottery’) to the love we have for our pets (‘Lemon Eyes’), and showcases the band’s talent for writing relatable, riotous guitar anthems. It was great to catch them live again, headlining for us at The Shacklewell Arms earlier this month too. The GIHE team are all big fans!

Big Joanie – Back Home
Like Angelica Ellis’ altruistic artwork that adorns the cover – which is a nod to the embroidered wall hangings popular in Caribbean homes post-Windrush, depicting drummer Chardine’s nephew at the barbers – Big Joanie tenderly and intricately weaved personal and political threads into their superb second album, Back Home. As activists and role models who formed their own musical foundations in the DIY punk scene, the black feminist punks have proved themselves to be a formidable force for change, truly devoted to creating a space for others who have felt ignored in the past. On Back Home, the trio have expanded on the lo-fi punk cacophonies and have introduced bold, bright synth textures and the altruistic violin sounds of experimental art-rock artist No Home across the record. The result is still distinctively Big Joanie, but they sound bigger and better than before – and that’s what earned them a nomination in the groundbreaking new Alternative Music category at the MOBO Awards this year. Breakup Haircut – Punk Dancing For Self Defence
Firm favourites for a while now, First Timers Fest alumni Breakup Haircut released their debut album Punk Dancing For Self Defence this year via Reckless Yes, and I couldn’t have been happier. A collection of joyously lo-fi pop punk reflecting on themes ranging from social anxiety and break-ups, to bi-erasure and existing in a Capitalist society, the band’s colourful charisma and sparkling charm shines through each track Whether you need cheering up with some buoyant danceable anthems, or simply want to immerse yourself in the band’s raw emotion and relatable, resonant reflections on life, it will provide you with the aural comfort needed to have survived 2022. We had the pleasure of hosting Breakup Haircut live, not once but twice this year, and each time it was a total joy. (ML) 

 

Brimheim – can’t hate myself into a different shape
“I felt like I’d been in this black muddy place, not able to see anything and kind of drowning,” Brimheim explained in an interview with me earlier this year, when discussing the songs that formed her debut album, can’t hate myself into a different shape. Mined from a “deep depression hole” during a global pandemic, the Danish artist has crafted an intricately observed collection of life-affirming songs that chime with relatable melancholy. It’s a poignant reflection on love in all its forms; romantic, platonic and the hardest type to articulate and master: self love. It’s a beautifully bruising unravelling of vulnerability, and I have returned to it again and again over the past 12 months. I am deeply grateful to Brimheim for making this poignant piece of art. BRUTUS – Unison Life
From the moment I heard Stefanie Mannaerts vocals on ‘Dust’, I knew I was going to be obsessed with Belgian heavy trio BRUTUS’ third album, Unision Life. It’s a visceral, deeply engaging record exploring growth, resilience, and the inevitability of change. Stefanie’s unique vocals are underscored by her phenomenal percussion, band mate Stijn’s rapturous guitar riffs and Peter’s brutal bass lines. With so many potent songs on the tracklist, it’s hard to pick favourites, but ‘Chainlife’, ‘Brave’, ‘Dust’ and ‘Victoria’ have been rattling around my skull for the past few months. I had the privilege of interviewing Stefanie about the record on the eve of it’s release, where she told me that ‘What Have We Done’ is her personal favourite, as it accurately captures the essence of what went into the creation of Unison Life. Seeing the band perform live at The Garage was further proof of their immense talent. (KC)

 

Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul – Topical Dancer
Not only one of my favourite albums of the year, this was also one of my favourite interviews that I did back in March now on our Soho Radio show. What a debut album this was! A rollercoaster ride in the most danceable music, delivering lyrics that cover issues we need to be addressing right now. I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Charlotte, where we talked about the album, the therapeutic process of making music and the use of laughter to tackle complex topics, and her lovely little baby Rocko also joined us for the chat which was so cute! cheerbleederz – even in jest
DIY ‘supergroup’ Cheerbleederz just have a knack of completely hitting my jangly indie-pop sweet spot every time, and so the fact that they released their debut album this year was a definite highlight. A collection of uplifting and relatable ‘anxiety anthems’, even in jest showcases the band’s ability to create wonderfully scuzzy, tongue-in-cheek reflections on everyday life with a fizzing energy and effervescent raw emotion. I just love how they’re able to combine this fuzzy, uptempo musicality with poignant sentiments, and album track ‘carbon copy’ may also contain my favourite lyric of the year: “I wish that I was friends with Yvie Oddly” (I really do). Chorusgirl – Collapso Calypso
Following 2015’s self titled debut and 2018’s Shimmer and Spin, Chorusgirl made her much-anticpated (by me especially!) musical return this Autumn with her latest album, Collapso Calypso. As each electro-tinged swirling soundscape flows with a sweeping majestic grace, the album reflects on poignant, heartfelt subject matter with glistening celestial charm. With the lilting allure of the likes of The Cure or Cocteau Twins, but maintaining an utterly unique shimmering splendour, it’s a truly captivating collection. Silvi has said that she wanted the album to be like a “hug in sonic form”, and that’s just what it is: a beautifully immersive catharsis. (ML) 

 

Ethel Cain – Preacher’s Daughter
I’ve been obsessed with the runaway narrative of Ethel Cain since I heard her single ‘Crush’ at the end of 2021. After playing her EP, Inbred, on repeat, I was thrilled to see that the American songwriter was releasing her debut album, Preacher’s Daughter, this year. Permeated by a palpable sense of lust, her evocative lyrics, reverb-heavy instrumentation and stunning vocals make for truly divine listening. From opening track ‘Family Tree (Intro)’, through to the sultry ‘Gibson Girl’ and stunning ‘Ptolemaea’, it’s the most sensual of sermons that absolutely sets my cells on fire every time I listen to it. Seeing Ethel Cain perform live at Heaven earlier this month was also an experience I will never forget. Long live Mother Cain. (KC)

 

Hinako Omori – a journey…
Differing from her 2019 EP, Auraelia – which was inspired by her experience of intense migraines that were accompanied by auras and other visual distortions – London-based musician Hinako Omori’s tranquil debut album seeks to further understand the physiological effects that music and sound frequencies have on the body. This exploration includes field recordings with binaural heads, tampering with mood-altering frequencies and inspiration from the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku aka “forest-bathing.” Her music seeks to connect with and understand the human condition in intricate and invigorating ways. She’s crafted a series of beautiful soundscapes that are underscored by patience, empathy and kindness. a journey… is a gift to listeners who need respite from the overwhelming stresses of daily life, and it was a pleasure to interview Hinako about it, and hear her play the record live at the Purcell Room at Southbank Centre this year, accompanied by the London Contemporary Orchestra. Jockstrap – I Love You Jennifer B
Jockstrap’s brilliant debut album, I Love You Jennifer B, includes one of my favourite songs of 2022, ‘Greatest Hits’. The whole album is a kaleidoscopic soundscape that bounces from genre to genre, twisting and turning in your ears, showcasing the true musical talent of the duo. Nodding to the 70s, the 90s, and it all gets shaken up appropriately by two kids of the 00s. (TW)

 

Porridge Radio – Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder To The Sky
One of my favourite albums of 2022! There is so much emotion in each song, in each guitar string, in each drum beat, in the strained-by-the-weight-of-it-all vocals. It calls to me and my inner teenage emo, and I answer every time by pressing play and turning up that volume dial|! It is so rich and I have not yet had my fill, so I will keep bathing. I also got to see Porridge Radio this year at End of the Road Festival and they more than delivered. Consider this an all time favourite album, and not just for this year. (TW)

 

Real Big Sky – Real Big Sky
Full of reverb drenched riffs, enigmatic vocals and shiver-inducing cymbal smashes, Real Big Sky’s debut album is a swirling collection of heavy guitar tunes that brood with quiet intensity. Beginning as a form of distraction during the Covid-19 lockdowns for songwriter Sara Kleppe, Real Big Sky was initially a solo project which she worked on in her bedroom in Hackney. Sara relocated back to her native Sweden in 2021, but with the help of friend and long-term collaborator Luca Romano – who also played drums and was on recording, mixing and production duties for the record – she has developed Real Big Sky’s sound to its fullest and most fluid yet. It’s a blissful mix of melodic noise that I wholeheartedly recommend. (KC)

 

SASAMI – Squeeze
From the moment I heard SASAMI’s industrial-tinged “rage dance” anthem ‘Say It’, I thought “this is a bit of me”. Taken from her second album, SQUEEZE, it’s the perfect introduction to her thrilling mix of metal, folk and grunge inspired sounds. “I feel like everyone has a dark metal side that they don’t know is there, until they find the right access point,” the L.A based musician told me in an interview earlier this year, and I couldn’t agree more. With heavier music genres being predominantly populated by white male faces, SASAMI’s SQUEEZE is an authentically heavy record, which offers a fresh take on the diversity and intricacy of metal music. The title track features GIHE fave No Home as well! (KC)

 

Scrounge – Sugar, Daddy
I still remember the first time I saw Scrounge perform live so clearly. Mari booked them as the opening act for a GIHE gig at The Windmill, and I was mesmerised by the South London duo’s gritty, relatable anthems. Their debut mini album, Sugar, Daddy, showcases all that they’ve achieved to date, with their cutting lyrics, intense riffs and fraught percussion reflecting the everyday hardships vocalist Lucy sings about. I found myself a bit choked at the end of the record, with tracks like ‘Starve’ and ‘Forward’ really hitting a nerve. Lucy & Luke are dedicated to making music on their own terms, and it’s been a joy watching them achieve so much over the past few years. Please, please buy this album. All of the GIHE team endorse it. (KC)

 

Sudan Archives – Natural Brown Prom Queen
I’ve been lapping up Sudan Archives’ album Natural Brown Prom Queen all year. It’s an amazing ride showcasing her incredible talent, with my particular favourite track being ‘Selfish Soul’. She is also an incredible performer, smashing out her skills on the violin in a consistently mesmerising performance. Black women artists so rarely receive credit deserved for technical innovation in music-making outside of vocal talent, and I hope we’re seeing a shift in that now with the likes of Sudan Archives, Lizzo and reflections on historic talents from music made by ESG, to Ma Rainey. VERO – Unsoothing Interior
Creating anthems with shades of 90s alternative icons like Sonic Youth, VERO’s aim is simple: “write the best fucking songs, have the best energy and show people that we’re having fun.” Saturated with brooding bass lines, swirling riffs, stinging lyrics and sultry vocals, that’s exactly what the Stockholm-based trio achieve on their debut album, Unsoothing Interior. From the anxious ‘She’s Scared Of Everything’ to the defiant ‘BEG!’, to the yearning ‘Heather’, the band juxtapose these energies across the record with distinctive flair. Get. It. In. Your. Ears. Now. (KC)

EPs

AGAAMA – Wandering Worlds
I took a real shine to this EP from Birmingham-based artist, composer, vocalist and producer AGAAMA after hearing her captivating single ‘Sarehole Mill’. Reflecting on everything from physical locations to our relationship with A.I (‘Blackbox Oracle’), Wandering Worlds is a brooding, meditative blend of atmospheric electronics, jazz-inspired orchestral arrangements and AGAAMA’s evocative vocals. This EP is as vast and altruistic as the collective memories that informed it. Definitely immerse yourself into AGAAMA’s unusual universe of sound. (KC)

 

Beckie Margaret – CIAGA Vol. 1
An unassuming, poetic collection of songs that ruminate on the shifting nature of love, Essex-based songwriter Beckie Margaret’s EP, CIAGA Vol.1, is a carefully crafted and deeply affecting listen. Released via my favourite label Cool Thing Records, these songs beautifully showcase a young woman learning how to fully express her feelings, not shying away from the pain or frustration that often accompanies the process. Through her emotive lyrics, distinctive vocals and tender, melodic guitar sounds, Beckie gently exposes her most intimate and passionate thoughts across the record, learning to trust her instincts when it comes to romantic infatuation. I cried the whole way through my first listen. (KC)

 

Currls – Hello, My Name Is
It was a total honour to host Currls’ EP launch earlier this month at the Shacklewell Arms, especially having hosted their first London headline London show back in November last year – to be involved with launching such a fantastic EP into the world was a real privilege! With a colourful charisma and rich, empowering energy, each track offers a catchy slice of twinkling, scuzz-filled rock, with the band’s own unique zest and soulful allure. With a gritty power, each enlivening offering proves Currls’ worth as a compelling band on the rise. (ML)

 

Dayydream – Bittersweet
An intuitive, affecting collection of songs that drift through the exquisite highs and intangible lows we experience on the path towards emotional resilience, Chloe Trappes aka Dayydream’s debut EP is a comforting and blissful ode to feeling in all of its intensity. Filled with delicate guitar strokes, dreamy vocals and affecting lyrics, the Glasgow-based songwriter ruminates on distance and desire across five tracks, and the way these things can shift our perspective towards others, and towards ourselves over time. ‘Wasn’t’ is my favourite track. (KC)

 

Fräulein – A Small Taste
Having first come across Joni and Karsten aka Fräulein via an online festival that Hanni from ARXX hosted during 2020’s lockdown, I was instantly utterly obsessed. Having finally released their debut EP, A Small Taste, this year, the duo have gone from strength to strength throughout the last 12 months, and deservedly so. I just can’t get enough of the gritty power of Joni’s raw, sweeping vocals and Karsten’s immense beats. They’re able to combine abrasive, grunge-infused hooks with a mysterious allure, creating something truly unique and fiercely powerful. Fraulein are one of the most impressive bands I’ve ever come across, and I cannot wait to see what they do next. (ML) 

 

Julia-Sophie – Feels Like Thunder
I have Tash to thank for introducing me to the wonderful Julia-Sophie. Feels Like Thunder is a hypnotic, poetic listen that profoundly moved me the first time I heard it. Julia-Sophie’s wonderful blend of soft vocals, haunting electronics and altruistic beats makes for perfect listening, with ‘Dial Your Number’ being the stand out track for me. She’s been a guest on our radio show twice, and each time she’s been so open and earnest about the emotions and processes that go into creating her art – something the GIHE team always appreciate. Me Rex – Plesiosaur
Having been fans of Me Rex for a few years now, it was wonderful to finally catch them live at Deer Shed festival this year; and they were just as lovely as I could have hoped for. And this year’s EP Plesiosaur is also extremely lovely. Following last year’s innovative album Megabear, throughout the EP, a swirling raw emotion oozes alongside jangling melodies and luscious harmonies, creating a rich, soothing catharsis. With each track offering a stirring lyricism and impassioned energy, I could immerse myself in Me Rex’s glistening musicality forever. I am VERY excited that Me Rex will be headlining our next live show at Shacklewell Arms on 10th February, with support from Dream Phone and Jen Denitto. Get your tickets here! (ML)

 

t l k – Strength In Tenderness
Independent Bristol-based artist & producer t l k’s ethereal EP, Strength In Tenderness, is an intoxicating blend of ambient, melancholic, jazz-inspired sounds. Creating the record gave the artist space to process their experiences of trauma, loss and selfhood, providing a beautiful backdrop for listeners to do the same. Tash & I saw t l k and CIL perform live in Dalston and we were both in awe of their effortless ability to captivate their crowds. I always return to the track ‘IWNU’, but the whole EP is worth your attention. (KC)

Five Favourites: SUEP

Led by SuepLord (Porridge Radio, Garden Centre, The GN Band) and Brain Wastefield (UK top model), London based SUEP are now a fully formed band with the addition of GN (The GN Band, Joanna Gruesome, The Tubs), Freakin’ Deacon (PC World, Garden Centre), and T-Mr.9 (Head of Pastoral Care). Interweaving jangly hooks with a whirring, psychedelic haze, the band recently released their debut single ‘Domesticated Dream‘. Oozing a vibrant, quirky energy, a joyous clatter of percussion swirls alongside uptempo electro-driven melodies and sweeping, honey-sweet vocals. A perfectly eclectic scintillating soundscape.

We think one of the best ways to get to know a band is by asking what music inspires them. So, to celebrate SUEP’s new single, we caught up with Sueplord to ask about her “Five Favourites” – five songs that she loves the most. Check out their choices below and scroll down to watch the unique new video for ‘Domesticated Dream’.

The Flirts – ‘Passion’
I only heard this song kind of recently, my friend Liam put it on in one of our YouTube sessions that me and my housemates often did during lockdown. It’s just so good and I reckon it’s quite theatrical, I really want to sing and act out all the words and dance along every time I hear it. I just looked up that The Flirts were formed by Bobby Orlando who worked with Divine and the Pet Shop Boys who I also love. I’ve been playing this song every time I DJ at the moment, and when I was on Green Man radio this summer I accidentally put on the extended mix which is just under 10 mins long but no one complained, that’s why I know it’s a good ‘un. There are a few performance videos of the song on YouTube and they are all amazing. I have definitely tried to use the song as a kind of exercise video by dancing along to their moves in my living room.

The Umlauts – ‘Boiler Suits and Combat Boots’
Ahh man I love the Umlauts so much, this is the first song of theirs I heard. It doesn’t have a video but it’s just such a great vibe and tune that I think I can get away with it. Porridge Radio played with them at two Library shows in Ashton and Widnes last month and there weren’t many people there and in Widnes it was a matinee performance, but they rocked it so hard, they sounded so large and full and it was literally impossible for me not to dance. I’ve listened to this song so much that when the synth solo came in I was singing along… They are stand up people as well. I can’t wait to hear their next single and the album. They are on Prah Recordings that are putting out some incredible stuff at the moment.

Jona Lewie – ‘I Think I’ll Get My Hair Cut’
Ok, this song is the song that I wish SUEP had written. But my man Jona wrote it. Jona Lewie is such a huge inspiration to me and Josh from SUEP. All of his songs have incredible hooks with a twinge of humour, which is exactly the genre I love, and I think it’s definitely a genre. One that Paul McCartney also fits into. I love that throughout the song he’s trying to be more attractive and popular and he’s concluded that to do that, he needs a haircut, but at the end of the song he realises he’s trying too hard and actually his hair is great. We’ve all been there. The synth riff that comes in goes straight to my heart every time I hear it, and I’ve heard this song a lot, I know all the words. By writing this I have concluded that SUEP should maybe cover this song. Keep your ears to the ground.

Becky Hill, David Guetta – ‘Remember’
Something a little different. I cannot contain how much I love this song. I have listened to it maybe a million times. The video is fine, don’t let it distract you from the lyrics:

“It’s only when I’m lying in bed on my own
And I wake up and I don’t see your name on my phone
It’s in the moments where I think that I’m better alone
That’s when I remember, that’s when I remember
Every time I walk past your house in the rain
And I tell myself that you were the biggest mistake
And just when I think I’m finally doing okay
That’s when I remember, that’s when I remember’

It gets me so deep every time. And it’s a huge club classic slam dunk. The amount of times I’ve been driving and yelling every word. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry with some kind of joyous sad tears. Nice one as well to Becky Hill, her voice is smash hits good. And David Guetta, all I can say is thank you. I’d just like to shout out to another song I would have put on this playlist that the rest of the band would have probably hated: Avicii – ‘Wake Me Up’ (definitely a song I wish I had written).

Alessi Brothers – ‘Seabird’
Damn, when this song drops and the vocals come in! The way the vocals are produced as well, they are so loud but so perfect. Normally I like vocals a bit buried, but this song has just got it. The lyrics are so beautiful and also is that a drum machine??? Also mega fade out vibes. It has it all.

SuepLord’s old house, which was once a youth centre in Surrey Quays, with the old sports hall being made into a makeshift studio where SUEP laid down a mini album worth of songs in two days, and later mixed by Mike
O’Malley (caroline, Girl Ray).

5 Things We Learned At Wide Awake Festival

Brockwell Park was buzzing with excited energy on Friday 3rd September, packed with hundreds of music fans keen to hear the sounds of the eclectic mix of underground talent who were booked to play Wide Awake‘s debut festival. Postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic last year, the appetite for hearing live music was unsurprisingly tenacious from the moment the festival gates opened and watching the crowds dance and sing along to the likes of IDLES, Goat Girl, black midi, Lena Willikens, Black Country, New Road and headliners shame gave us an overwhelming sense of joy (heavily aided by multiple cans of Red Stripe.)

We’ve condensed 10 hours of live music down to 5 key points that we’ve filtered through our GIHE lens and shared them with you below…

1. Self Esteem is a beacon of hope

Rebecca Lucy Taylor and her bandmates delivered a truly empowering set during their headline slot on the Moth Club stage, complete with a stunning light show and dancers too. When Taylor walked on stage with the words “But There Is Nothing That Terrifies A Man More Than A Woman That Appears Completely Deranged” lit up behind her silhouette, we knew we were in for a treat. Her powerful voice and relatable lyrics filled the tent with a sincere and playful joy.

2. Porridge Radio are great

We’re well aware most people already know this, but Brighton four piece Porridge Radio really impressed us with their stellar mid-afternoon performance on the Bad Vibrations stage. Fronted by captivating vocalist & lead guitarist Dana Margolin, the band ripped through their setlist full of indie bangers with impressive flair. We’ll definitely be catching them live again in the future.

3. Stumbling across a new favourite band feels just as good as re-visiting old favourites

We’ve missed the electric feeling that flows through your cells when you unexpectedly hear a great song in the distance by a new band you’ve never seen live before. Porridge Radio are a prime example here, but we also found ourselves drawn to the sounds of Snapped Ankles and The Murder Capital on the Moth Club stage, as well as Mandy, Indiana‘s set on the So Young stage. We were sad to miss Dream Wife, who had to cancel last minute due to contracting Covid-19, but GIHE favourites Goat Girl distracted us from this gap in the line-up with their charming yet brooding set on the main stage.

4. Brockwell Park is an ideal location for a music festival

We may be saying this solely because 2/3s of GIHE are based in South London, but Brockwell Park felt like the perfect location for a day of indie, leftfield and electronic music. Packed with independent food & drink stands as well as the main bars, it felt like we’d been transported out of London for the day when the sun was shining and the music was blaring from all directions.

5. We’ve really missed music festivals

From running into old friends, making new ones in the queues for the portaloos and generally just watching everyone else have a total blast, Wide Awake really made things feel “normal” again for a split second. We’re hoping that next year, everyone will feel confident enough to come back to Brockwell Park to sample some of the incredible bands and artists who made the festival feel as exciting and unique as it did this year.

GIHE: Tracks Of 2020

It feels strange to be celebrating anything in 2020, but the GIHE team want to shine a light on some of the brilliant music that’s been released against the odds during the last 12 months. If you or your band managed to release some music this year – congratulations! You should be super proud. If you didn’t manage to write anything new this year though, we fully understand and we’ll still be here to sing your praises when you feel ready to write again.

Following our album round-up yesterday, today we share our ‘top tracks’ of 2020. As you can tell, we haven’t held back, as there’s just been so much amazing music released this year that we felt deserved a mention. So, read about our forty two favourite songs of the year (told you we weren’t holding back!), and then hit play on our mammoth, and super eclectic, playlist at the end of this post….

HAWXX – ‘Deadlands’
Having previously blown us away with their immense live show, heavy rockers HAWXX this year released their epic four track debut Deadlands. And the immense title track has been on heavy rotation around my ears since first hearing it back in May. With an explosive frenzied energy propelling raging hooks and the seething vocals of front woman Anna Papadimitriou, it’s an utterly compelling whirlwind; a fantastically fierce accompaniment to the chaos of 2020.

Vulpynes – ‘Sister’
Having been majorly disappointed when we had to cancel our April gig at The Finsbury that Dublin duo Vulpynes were set to headline, it came as some consolation that they released a perfectly riotous EP Us Against Them later in the year. Taken from the EP, ‘Sister’ is a powerful ode to ‘pseudo sisterhood’. Propelled by Molly’s raw, impassioned vocals, it oozes an immense sense of urgency amid a seething eerie underlying force. With swirling, reverb-strewn hooks and pounding primal beats, it’s a fantastically fierce, empowered slice of ferocious rock magnificence.

Guitar Gabby/The Txlips – ‘The Dead Pool’
With a mission to change the narrative in which the music industry showcases women, Atlanta based Guitar Gabby and The Txlips partner with Girls Rock Camps internationally and nationally to bring classes about home recording, equipment set up, copyright law and more to young girls. Taken from their explosive album Prison Of Life, ‘The Dead Pool’ is filled with scuzzed out riffs as Gabriella Logan’s seething growl soars. Oozing a gritty emotion, it’s a ferocious, empowering anthem; a completely necessary angst-driven offering for these strange times.

Problem Patterns – ‘Sell By Date’
Taken from The Fight Is Not Over – a collaborative record with songs from Strange New Places, Gender Chores and Sister Ghost, in addition to Problem Patterns – ‘Sell By Date’ is a perfectly raging anthem rallying against societal gender norms and the pressures and expectations put on women of a certain age to have children (something I relate to HARD). Propelled by an empowering seething energy, it’s a frenzied fist-clencher that leaves me longing to witness it in all its live glory. The Fight Is Not Over addresses the need to continue pushing for more inclusive and diverse spaces and was recorded by Rocky O’Reilly to raise money for  The 343, an Artist-Focused, Feminist-led, Queer Arts Space in East Belfast. New Pagans – ‘Yellow Room’
I love it when my feminist literature and new music worlds collide! Inspired by the semi-autobiographical short-story The Yellow Wallpaper by American author Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Belfast-based New Pagans’ penned ‘Yellow Room’ to highlight the need for a specialised parent-and-baby mental health unit in Northern Ireland. Through the medium of Gilmans’ text, the band explore the isolation faced by new mothers, with Lyndsey McDougall’s urgent vocals leading the way. I loved listening to the band’s EP Glacial Erratic earlier this year too and I can’t wait to hear more from them in 2021.

LIINES – ‘Sorry’
Having received acclaim from the likes of Sleaford Mods, John Kennedy and BBC 6Music’s Steve Lamacq, as well as blowing us away headlining for us at The Finsbury, Manchester trio LIINES consistently impress with their distinctive, raw post-punk. Oozing the band’s trademark dark, brooding power, ‘Sorry’ builds with deep, intense bass lines, the gritty, commanding growl of vocalist Zoe McVeigh and Leila O’Sullivan’s consistent pummelling beats. Propelled by a thrashing sense of urgency, it’ll captivate the ears with its punk-fuelled bewitching allure.

Tiger Mimic – ‘Where The Fire Used To Be’
Disappointed that we had to cancel what would have been their debut gig for us in April, we were glad to hear Tiger Mimic’s new releases this year. Propelled by a driving energy, ‘Where The Fire Used To Be’ blasts out racing riffs alongside the soaring splendour of front woman Jess’ striking vocals. Building to an immense climax, it offers a sense of hope in these seemingly hopeless times, reassuring us that “the whole world will start over in the spring”.

Bitch Hunt – ‘Spaceman’
Since forming at First Timers Fest, London based all queer/non-binary band Bitch Hunt have been going from strength to strength; last October impressing us at GIHE us with their immense live set at The Finsbury. Taken from a split cassette that they released with fellow faves adults earlier this year, ‘Spaceman’ is an observational and relatable slice of punk-pop. With Bitch Hunt’s trademark impassioned energy and swirling harmonies, it’s a spot-on reflection on the sickening arrogance of all those cis male ‘splainers and ‘spreaders we so often have to endure in our day to day lives.

Porridge Radio – ‘7 Seconds’
In a year where so much went wrong, watching the unstoppable rise of Porridge Radio felt so right. With ‘7 Seconds’ the band moved away from the guitar-heavy sound of their Mercury-nominated album, Every Bad, towards alternative ’80s synths. The result is reassuringly nostalgic, like it’s jumped from the soundtrack of a badass John Hughes film; melancholic, but still upbeat and unbelievably catchy.I’m in love with front-person and songwriter Dana Margolin’s voice. Bold and strong, but vulnerable too, they sing of wasting, waiting and rising above it all. Against the backdrop of a rather tedious few months, ‘7 Seconds’ feels hopeful and exciting. When it comes on the radio, as it frequently has, I feel a little jolt of electricity run through my veins. And it’s a jolt that’s wired straight to my heart, mind… and my feet. The song – and the band – are something very special, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

CMAT – ‘I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!’
“Always the cowboy, never the cow / I hate the way my life turned out” might just be the lyric of 2020, provided by Irish pop sensation CMAT. “[The song is] based around a VINE that was really popular from a couple of years ago of a load of guys drinking cans outside in a playground saying “I wanna be a cowboy baby!,” CMAT explained when we spoke to her about the single in September. The popstar has a talent for taking obscure scenarios and molding them into intensely relatable, catchy pop tunes and ‘I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!’ is a charming slice of  Americana-tinged pop that laments the struggles of urban isolation.

Kynsy – ‘Cold Blue Light’
Based on her own experience of being at a New Years Eve party watching a man spout racist remarks, Dublin-based multi-instrumentalist Kynsy’s single ‘Cold Blue Light’ is a dark synth-pop gem that oozes with defiant attitude. I love her genre-blending sounds and I’m excited to hear more from her in 2021.

Jessica Winter – ‘Sad Music’
This is the title track from Queen of sad bangers Jessica Winter’s debut EP, and it’s an electro-pop gem. Inspired by the need to relieve heartbreak through the medium of music, Winter effortlessly blends elements of electronica, pop, R&B and industrial music to create her intensely dance-able sounds. I pranced around my bedroom miming to ‘Sad Music’ for most of Lockdown 1.0.

Husk – ‘Heal With Time’
One of our favourite discoveries of 2020, Manchester-based trans non-binary artist HUSK creates uptempo pop gems. Released in the summer, ‘Heal With Time’ oozes a celebratory sound juxtaposed with a poignant, reflective lyricism. Propelled by ’80s-inspired glistening hooks and synth-soaked uplifting summer vibes, it’s a vibrant, danceable anthem, shimmering with a sparkling empowering energy.

Kadija Kamara – ‘Best Moves’
Even in uncertain times, London-based songwriter Kadija Kamara remains focused on her ‘Best Moves’. On this single, she calmly reminds listeners to own their “magic” and recognise the value of their own work, reassuring them with her warm beats, grooving bass lines and smooth vocals. With a sound best described as “alt-soul” which combines her love of ’60s and ’70s analogue sounds, Kadija’s passion for nostalgia permeates her musical output.

Evil House Party – ‘Wicked’
An intoxicating blend of hazy vocals and sultry synths, Evil House Party’s debut single smoulders with the intensity of a hot summer night fuelled by Bonnie & Clyde-esque musings. ‘Wicked’ is a “bittersweet revenge pop anthem” that seduces listeners with its yearning vocals and heady beats.

CIRCE – ‘Ten Girls’
London based dark-pop artist Circe is inspired by the films of David Lynch, the brutality of Margaret Atwood’s fiction, the soundtrack to Stranger Things and Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo & JulietThis single ‘Ten Girls’  takes its title from a quote from The Handmaid’s Tale. Of the track, Circe explains: “[Atwood’s novel] is a poetic but disturbing view of women living in a dystopian oppressive world. This chimes with my own fractured generation of cancel culture, swipes of sex, and revenge porn.” I’m obsessed with Circe’s debut EP She’s Made Of Saints, which is full of sweeping, cinematic gems.

Notelle – ‘Bugs’
I love the industrial-tinged production and wispy vocals on Nashville-based “nightmare-pop” artist Notelle’s single ‘Bugs’. She wrote this song after a break-up when she felt like part of her ex was still invading her body and it’s an intoxicating, feverish effort to rid herself of this unwanted sensation.|

Noga Erez – ‘You So Done’
A resilient, emotionally charged offering from an uncompromising artist, Noga Erez’s single ‘You So Done’ delves deep into the memories left behind by a toxic relationship. Far removed from the joviality of her lockdown inspired single ‘NO News On TV’, Erez channelled her fears, frustrations and un-nerving flashbacks into this track, which radiates with artistic confidence. Accompanied by a stunning set of visuals directed by Indy Hait, also featuring her musical partner Ori Rousso, the Tel Aviv-based artist continues to blow us away with her mesmerising musical accomplishments.

Eilis Frawley – ‘Stats’
Taken from her incredible EP Adult Life, Eilis Frawley’s ‘Stats’ is one of the most stunning and necessary listens of 2020. Offering a completely unique soundscape from the classically trained percussionist, it combines arresting drum-beats with Krautrock-infused spoken word, as the lyrics see Frawley recite hard-hitting stats, highlighting the everyday injustices facing women today. Tackling issues such as period poverty, FGM, domestic violence and other vital issues, it’s a beautifully striking and necessary listen. A poignant protest song that you can dance to. Adult Life is out now via Reckless Yes.

Princess Nokia – ‘Sugar Honey Iced Tea (S.H.I.T)’
Openly queer rapper and all round inspiration, Destiny Nicole Frasqueri – aka Princess Nokia – writes powerful, feminist anthems promoting self love and raging against the patriarchy. Fusing together infectious beats and a powerful, angst-driven energy, along with her trademark tongue-in-cheek wit, with ‘S.H.I.T’ Princess Nokia once again offers an empowering and playful presence in these times when pushing for change is so important.

Æ Mak feat. Seba Safe – ‘i dance in the kitchen’
Joyfully schooling listeners how to make uplifting kitsch-pop tunes under the strangest of circumstances, Irish artist Æ MAK’s single ‘i dance in the kitchen’ was made with “100% childsplay and solo belly laughs.” Featuring the vocals of fellow Irish artist Seba Safe, the track is lifted from her EP how to: make a kitsch pop song to show the world, which she produced from home during Lockdown 1.0. I loved bopping around my bedroom to this record and of course, dancing in the kitchen to it too.

Lido Pimienta – ‘Eso Que Tu Haces’
No-one else makes electronic music sound as warm and meaningful as Colombian-born, Toronto-based artist Lido Pimienta does. This track ‘Eso Que Tu Haces’ (translated roughly as ‘That Thing You Do’) is one of many triumphant singles lifted from Pimienta’s Grammy-nominated album Miss Colombia, which is a vivid celebration and criticism of her Colombian heritage. I have spent many an hour marvelling at the artwork on this record and singing along to my baby pink vinyl, despite knowing only three words in Spanish.

Eckoes – ‘The Light’
Having dazzled us playing live at The Finsbury a few years back, London-based Eckoes consistently creates beautiful, soothing soundscapes. Filled with strobing synths and shimmering guitars, ‘The Light’ showcases the truly spellbinding power of Eckoes’ soaring vocals, as it lulls the listener into a cathartic sense of hypnosis with its alluring grace. A truly captivating offering from an artist on the rise.

Serena Isioma – ‘King’
Chicago-based musician Serena Isioma’s single ‘King’ is full of seductive beats and brooding bass lines. It’s a shimmering reflection on the problematic friendships 20-year old Isioma has found themselves in. “’King’ is about remembering your worth,” the songwriter explains. Isioma’s latest EP The Leo Sun Sets is every bit as poignant and dreamy as this single.

Despicable Zee – ‘We Won’t Stop’ (Tiiva Remix)
A captivating, left-field electronic exploration of dual heritage, motherhood and self-autonomy, Oxford-based drummer and producer Despicable Zee (aka Zahra Haji Fath Ali Tehrani) released her third EP Atigheh in 2019. This year, with the help of an eclectic mix of collaborators, Zee shared a remix of the recording titled Atigheh Reimagined, which opened with this track by Tiiva. Keeping the hypnotic qualities of the original, Tiiva’s treatment of  ‘We Won’t Stop’ fuses smooth, breathy vocals together with dense yet ambient beats. I can’t recommend listening to this EP enough, it also features collaborations with Tiece, Planningtorock and Young Knives.

MJ Guider – ‘FM Secure’
Lifted from her album Sour Cherry Bell, MJ Guider’s shadowy single ‘FM Secure’ is permeated by murky industrial sounds and atmospheric, beguiling vocals. Based in New Orleans, MJ Guider (aka Melissa Guion) blends elements of shoegaze, gothic pop and industrial sounds to create her hypnotic music. On Sour Cherry Bell, Guider explored power dynamics and the notion of “lost and found” and these musings extended to ‘FM Secure’, its ominous glow intensifying with each listen.

Two Tribes – ‘Cruel Sensuality’
Full of commanding beats, jagged synths and soaring vocals, Two Tribes‘ single ‘Cruel Sensuality’ is a cathartic oscillation between emotional resilience and the unexpected apathy that comes with the ending of a relationship. Taken from their upcoming EP, which is set for release in 2021, the London-based trio blend vivid electronic textures with jolting rhythms to create an anthemic new sound. This is a grade A BANGER.

Kelly Lee Owens – ‘L.I.N.E’
I could have picked any track from Kelly Lee Owens’ second album, Inner Song, having listened to it on repeat so often that it’s become like listening to one continuous ambient epic.  ‘L.I.N.E.’ stands out, as the most deeply emotional song on the album, and because it gives some exposure to Owens’ vocals, also a central feature of  ‘Luminous Spaces’, her collaboration with Jon Hopkins, and one of my favourites from last year .  It’s also a reflection of how much more electronic music I’ve listened to lately (other notable acts from the last 18 months have included Peggy Gou, Bicep, and HAAi).  It could be that I’ve missed the old days of being out and about, at venues packed with bodies, light and sound – but I also think there’s something valuable in the (often) unspoken emotion of electronic music at a time when connections between us all have been strained.  Given the domestic nature of much of recent times, and paraphrasing a Jarvis Cocker single from 2020, I’ve been listening to House Music all year long.

Grawl!x – ‘Epicene’
Having headlined the last gig we held at The Finsbury before the world changed forever, Grawl!x creates euphoric cinematic soundscapes filled with twinkling electronic hooks and spellbinding harmonies. Characterised by Maria’s distinctive impassioned vocals and a poignant stirring emotion, each offering from the Derby-based artist is utterly captivating.

Penelope Trappes – ‘Eel Drip’
A goose bump inducing electronic soundscape, ‘Eel Drip’ is the title track from London-based, Australian-born artist Penelope Trappes’ most recent EP. It’s a dark, delicate rumination on accepting the inevitability that our lives will all be touched by death at some point. Through her arpeggiated electronics and beguiling vocals, Trappes extrapolates on these themes and invites her listeners to experience the comfort and the catharsis that comes with this acceptance.

Mentrix – ‘Walk’
Born in Iran but now based in Berlin, Mentrix (aka Samar Rad) blends her experiences of eastern and western culture along with traditional Sufi instrumentation to create her beguiling, bold soundscapes. ‘Walk’ is full of captivating vocals, atmospheric electronics and commanding percussion. It’s taken from her debut album, My Enemy, My Love, which is a powerful exploration of female resilience, independence and what happens when women are caught between two cultures, each filled with their own flaws and freedoms. It’s a stunning record and this track is a definite highlight.

Blonde Maze – ‘Not All Flowers Bloom’
Having been a huge fan of New York artist and previous guest on our radio show Blonde Maze for a long while now, it was wonderful to hear her new releases this year. Reflecting on the realisation that even though something is beautiful, it may not last forever, ‘Not All Flowers Bloom’ is a truly euphoric slice of electro-pop. A perfect example of Blonde Maze’s knack for creating exquisite soundscapes. I could listen to everything she creates on a loop forever; it’s just so completely calming and blissfully cathartic.

CATBEAR – ‘Girl Crush’
A dreamy electro-pop rumination about wanting a friendship to develop into something more romantic, London-based queer duo CATBEAR’s single ‘Girl Crush’ was written during Lockdown 1.0. Recorded and produced in Zoe  Konez’s home studio in Brixton, the single is a completely DIY affair, with Sarah Smith laying down her vocals in her spare room wardrobe. The pair playfully ponder the “could-have-beens and what ifs” when it comes to thinking about that certain someone. Their charming pop creations were a welcome distraction for those caught up in a crush during unusual times.

Ellis – ‘Fall Apart’
Released in early January, Canada’s alt-indie angel Ellis released this swirling single. Dawning at a time of blissful ignorance during a quiet moment before the storm to come, Ellis couldn’t have anticipated the level of comfort ‘Fall Apart’ would bring to her listeners in 2020. With dreamy, personal moments illustrated so softly, Ellis’ peaceful scenes of whispers under sheets served as a euphoric escape that also acknowledged hardship through self-awareness. Both humility and hesitation are felt through Ellis’ symbolism of what it means to accidentally fall apart. Her delicate depictions and flustered lyrics are realities felt by so many. Hushed vocals and warm guitar tones embody the closeness and tenderness that ‘Fall Apart’ illuminates. A nostalgic essence is met with a small amount of weariness that captivates the complexity and fear of being unconditionally seen by another, even on our worst days. In an uncertain time it has served as a utopian narrative of relatability and release. Ellis’ ‘Fall Apart’ is a therapeutic moment that exists in a cloudy sky, gloomy, but kissed by the sun.

Talking Violet – ‘Indigo’
Canadian band Talking Violet’s first single in two years,  ‘Indigo’ offers an ethereal dreamscape oozing a shimmering haze and immersive shoegaze-tinged hooks. Flowing with the Cocteau Twins-esque vocals of front woman Jill Goyeau, and swooping other-worldly melodies, it’s an utter sonic delight. A truly immersive listen that’ll leave you longing for more. (Jill also happens to be an excellent writer for us at GIHE!)

ARXX – ‘Call Me Crazy’
Following the release of last year’s EP Wrong Girl Honey, and 2018’s debut Daughters Of Daughters, total faves ARXX this year returned to our ears with ‘Call Me Crazy’. Whilst it may be a bit of a change in tone for the Brighton duo, it loses none of the emotion-strewn power we’ve come to know and love. Showcasing Hanni and Clara’s more reflective side, it offers a heartfelt offering reflecting on mental health struggles, at a time when this topic is more resonant than ever before. Whilst dealing with an affecting subject, however, ARXX manage to create a truly uplifting and instantly catchy empowering anthem.

Emma Kupa – ‘Nawlins’
Already a big fan of her band Mammoth Penguins, I’m no less in love with Emma Kupa’s solo material. Taken from this year’s beautiful album It Will Come Easier, ‘Nawlins’ flows with lilting, folk-strewn melodies and Kupa’s distinctive raw vocals. Filled with a heartfelt lyrical storytelling and euphoric uptempo musicality, it builds with glistening hooks to a stirring slice of perfect indie-pop. It Will Come Easier is out now via Fika Recordings.

Captain Handsome – ‘Halloween’
Taken from Captain Handsome’s debut EP I Am Not An Animal, ‘Halloween’ flows with silky-smooth vocals and a twinkling, stripped-back musicality. With its delicate lo-fi scuzz and tongue-in-cheek relatable lyricism (“It was halloween, I was 24, I had a bad time on the bathroom floor”), it’s a sensitive, yet not sentimental, effervescent offering. Captain Handsome is the solo project of Lily from Fightmilk, and her EP I Am Not An Animal was released in January via Reckless Yes.

Finish Flag – ‘Garden’
Having first fallen in love with Finish Flag when they played for us live at The Finsbury last summer, this year their album Swimming Pools has provided a lot of comfort. Taken from the album, ‘Garden’ flows with twinkling hooks and luscious harmonies, creating a dreamy slice of lo-fi indie-pop. Another band who I’ve sought soothing catharsis in throughout 2020, I bought Finish Flag’s beautiful pink vinyl on bandcamp day a couple of months ago, and I recommend you do the same.

Gold Baby – ‘Versaille’
Having been following Gold Baby for some time now, last year front woman Siân Alex joined forces with Sara Kleppe and Scott Hislop to form the band as we know them today. And it’s been wonderful to see them go from strength to strength. Recent single ‘Versailles’ showcases all there is to love about them. With shimmering guitars and swooning melodies flowing alongside Siân’s luscious, crystalline vocals, it oozes a stirring heartfelt emotion. A beautifully rich slice of melancholy dream-pop.

LibraLibra – Listerine
Brighton-based LibraLibra have been firm favourites of GIHE for a couple of years, never ceasing to impress. And this year they released their phenomenal debut EP Hail Mary. Taken from the EP, ‘Listerine’ is a step away from the usual high energy riotous cacophonies of previous releases. Showcasing the incredible soaring splendour and versatility of front woman Beth Cannon’s vocals with an almost operatic force, it builds to a magnificent, immense anthem of self-realisation.

Beckie Margaret – ‘God’
Essex-based songwriter Beckie Margaret has a flawless voice and a talent for writing beautifully bruising lyrics, something that her single ‘God’ showcases perfectly. I’m not ashamed to say I shed a tear when I first listened to this track, which is a cinematic reflection on unreciprocated love. Margaret releases through Cool Thing Records, who are a collective of people who absolutely love the music they’re making and promoting. It’s always a good day when an email about one of their artists appears at the top of my GIHE inbox.
