Track Of The Day: BLAB – ‘Insurance’

A gritty reflection on how our definition of success changes as we grow older, Southend-based multi-instrumentalist BLAB has shared her latest single ‘Insurance’. Released via Cool Thing Records, BLAB combines direct lyrics and restless guitar lines in order to deliver her cutting observations on how we avoid being crushed by the pressures of conformity.

“I was really inspired by Gang Of Four when I was writing ‘Insurance’,” BLAB aka Frances Murray explains. “It’s about questioning whether your life actually makes you happy or whether you’re just following the crowd. Working in insurance or in a city job has become such a universal experience for 20-somethings. ‘Insurance’ peers behind the façade at the unfortunate truth that external markers of success don’t always equate to a life of fulfilment. It touches upon my own realisation of this fact, and how due to social media and societal expectation I had a very warped view of what a happy and successful life for myself would be like.”

With her previous singles ‘Eton Mess’, ‘Casual Sex’ and ‘RIP’, BLAB firmly communicated her anti-establishment message. Now with her latest single ‘Insurance’, she pushes these boundaries further and reaffirms her narrative of independence and individuality, completely on her own terms. She’s currently working on her debut album with Sam Duckworth (Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly) and Rees Broomfield at SS2 Recording in Southend, channelling her riot grrrl attitude into a collection of witty, infectious anthems.

LISTEN: Venus Grrrls – ‘Hate Me’

After much critical acclaim from the likes of BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, and Radio X for their previous releases including ‘Goth Girl‘, Leeds band Venus Grrrls are back with another angry bop that’ll help you release some pent-up rage. 

The song explores the consequences of unvoiced emotions and lack of communication, delving into “the internal complexities this can cause, and explores the desire to have clarity and closure.” A very relatable situation which makes the question demanded in the chorus “Why do you hate me honey?” very cathartic to scream along to.

‘Hate Me’ is a danceable, angry song that makes you want to sway in the verses and pogo during the chorus. These two ends are held together by the consistency of lead singer Grace Kelly’s powerful, smooth vocals. The drums and rhythm section bring a frenzied energy when needed and the transitions between this and the more swayable verses are seamless. The gorgeous creeping bassline, perfectly matched with the vocals, grips listeners from the get-go and manages to be both punchy and melodious. The synths bring the song to another level sonically without being distracting or gimmicky. Perfect for this riot grrrl-inspired number.

So, do yourself a favour and listen to ‘Hate Me’ by Venus Grrrls. In fact, put it on repeat.

Track Of The Day: BLAB – ‘Eton Mess’

A righteous assault on the many failings of the UK government, Southend based multi-instrumentalist BLAB has shared her latest single ‘Eton Mess’. Released via Cool Thing Records, the track is a rumbling “anti-fascist anthem” that proudly sticks two fingers up to the establishment and snarls in the face of the apathetic, privileged men who were born into running it.

“’Eton Mess’ is about the consistent negative impact the Tories have had on the lives of average people,” explains BLAB aka Frances Murray. “It’s about a government so out of touch with people’s everyday lives and a culture of ignorance and apathy amongst the wealthy elite. I am furious at how we can turn a blind eye to a prime minister who is openly racist, homophobic and sexist. How inequality is perpetuated by upholding archaic values in society and continuing to enable a broken system where politicians from the same few private schools in the country are elected. I wanted to find a way to vent my anger and disillusionment with the government and the lives they have jeopardised through austerity and a lack of NHS funding.”

Fuelled by her disdain for current political policies and backed by her anarchic lyrics and riotous guitar riffs, BLAB’s message on ‘Eton Mess’ is clear: speak up and speak loud. She’s currently working on her debut album with Sam Duckworth (Get Cape. Wear Cape.
