PLAYLIST: May 2025

We know our May playlist is a little delayed…(we were at The Great Escape Festival hosting our showcase on The Beach Soundwaves Stage!) but it’s still stacked full of new music from some of our favourite female, LGBTQ+ and non-binary artists.

We’ve put together another eclectic mix of indie musings, alt-folk tunes, punk bangers, immersive electronic sounds and some grunge & shoegaze anthems for your listening pleasure. Take some time to scroll through our selections below and make sure you press play on the playlist at the end of this post.

Jasmine.4.t – ‘Elephant’
I’ve made no secret of my love of Jasmine.4.t over the last year or so, and it was so wonderful to see her live for the second time, playing an exquisite set to a sold out Lexington last week. Following the success of her debut album, You Are The Morning, a jam-packed UK tour and a tour supporting Lucy Dacus across the US, the Manchester-based artist has now shared a special acoustic EP to raise money for AKT, a charity supporting young LGBTQIA+ people through housing emergencies.

Having been homeless and sleeping on the floors and sofas of queer friends herself when she wrote her album, it’s an organisation close to her heart: “The people who supported me during that time became my family and the muses for my album. This is such a beautiful full circle moment for me, to be in the privileged position of being able to pay that debt forward. Thank you all so much for your support. I love you.”

The EP features beautifully stripped back versions of three songs from her album, showcasing the heartfelt raw emotion and vulnerability that went into writing them: “We were originally gonna use the actual demos that got me signed by Phoebe, but my voice has changed a lot since then and I wanted to redo them, but in exactly the same way: with two vocal tracks and two guitar tracks, recorded in my bedroom on tape. You Are The Morning is an album about queer love and hope and solidarity, and so I wanted to share these tracks in that spirit.” Listen to the EP and donate on bandcamp now.

Ghostwoman – ‘Alive’
Set to release their new album in September, Belgium/Canada based duo Evan Uschenko and Ille van Dessel aka Ghostwoman have shared this anthemic new single. Propelled by Uschenko’s fuzzy hooks which he played on a 12 string guitar, along with van Dessel’s fierce caustic beats, it offers an impassioned ode to continuing to find joy in the art of creation in spite of the dark times we’re living in. Welcome To The Civilized World, the upcoming album from Ghostwoman, is set for release on 5th September via Full Time Hobby. (ML)

Slung – ‘Limassol’
Congratulations to Brighton rockers Slung on the release of their excellent debut album, In Ways. Released via Fat Dracula, the record showcases the band’s instinctive ability to blend raging riffs, powerhouse percussion and compelling vocals into songs about inequality, generational trauma and ruminations on what could have been. This track ‘Limassol’ is a shining example of the latter, inspired by fading memories of lost love. Check out the accompanying video here. (Kate Crudgington – Features Editor)

Anna Younger – ‘Girl Guts’
This is the latest single from Scottish independent musician Anna Younger and it simmers with relatable angst. Her grungy guitars and potent vocals combine to create a foreboding soundscape, as she uses the lyrical metaphor of fruit “to explore the challenges, transitions and pain of the female existence.” (KC)

M(h)aol – ‘I Miss My Dog’
I’ve been following Irish post-punks M(h)aol since they released their powerful single ‘Laundries’ back in 2020. Their lineup has changed and their sound has developed significantly since then, which has culminated in the trio’s excellent new album, Something Soft. ‘I Miss My Dog’ is lifted from the record, released via Merge Records & TULLE. It’s an ode to drummer & vocalist Constance Keane’s late canine companion Poppy, who passed away in July 2024. (KC)

Problem Patterns ft. Matt Korvette (Pissed Jeans) – ‘Sad Old Woman’
Everyone here at GIHE loves Belfast DIY punks Problem Patterns, so it’s no surprise that we’re including their latest anthem on our playlist! Featuring vocals from Pissed Jeans’ vocalist Matt Korvette, ‘Sad Old Woman’ is the band’s riotous new effort that tackles ageist & sexist stereotypes and encourages listeners to dismiss these damaging anti-ageing narratives. The track is accompanied by a music video too, which you can watch here. We can’t wait to have Problem Patterns headline for us again at our GIHE 10th Birthday All-Dayer gig at The Cavendish Arms on Saturday 27th September. Fortitude Valley – ‘Sunshine State’
Set to release their new album this summer, Fortitude Valley have been big faves of mine since their 2021 debut, and they continue to charm my ears with their glistening new single. Complete with jangly guitars and heartfelt sugar-sweet vocals, ‘Sunshine State’ offers a sparkling reflection on the mixed feelings of front person Laura Kovic’s about leaving her home country of Australia – interweaving a nostalgic sentimentality with a driving punk-pop energy. Of the track, she explains: “I was so keen to get away! From such a beautiful place! So the song is like: I’m going back to the Sunshine State to find my younger, more melodramatic self and catch-up with her.” Part Of The Problem, Baby, the upcoming new album from Fortitude Valley, is out 1st August via Specialist Subject Records. (ML)

Rival Queens – ‘Right Now’
Following her riotous, grunge-infused debut ‘Not Your Enemy’ and the more heartfelt ‘Sun Don’t Shine’, esteemed session guitarist and songwriter Sally-Anne Hickman aka Rival Queens has now shared a sparkling new single. Reflecting on feelings of burnout and workplace apathy, ‘Right Now’ oozes shades of the sparkling indie-pop of bands such as Best Coast as its swirling musicality and shimmering singalong refrains offer an insight into Sally-Anne’s ability to create heartfelt instant earworms of any genre. Junk Whale – ‘Grief Song’
Over the last couple of weeks since the new self-released EP from Junk Whale came out, I’ve been pretty much listening to it non-stop, unable to get enough of its scuzzy raw emotion and lilting indie-pop energy. Despite covering poignant themes such as grief and mental illness, the EP as a whole oozes an uplifting effervescent spirit, each track offering an instantly catchy jangly earworm (and not a repeating chorus in sight!). The band expand: “Lyrically, this might be our darkest release yet, written under the cloud of lockdown malaise and personal setbacks. But musically, it’s probably our most upbeat and energetic.” (ML)

Strange New Places – ‘Sleep For Dinner’
The third in a series of singles released ahead of their new album, ‘Sleep For Dinner’ is the latest offering from Belfast’s Strange New Places. Juxtaposing reflections on feelings of fatigue and depression with an uptempo scuzzy energy, and the band’s trademark fiercely impassioned emotion, they’re keen for us to keep in mind that – despite its resonant subject matter, “…the track is also funny and a bop.” Another instant fave from this queer, neurodiverse band of “right on radicals with low self-esteem.” (ML)

Maya Lakhani – ‘Fall For Me’
Someone who’s wowed us with her energy-fuelled live shows on more than one occasion, and with acclaim from the likes of Radio 1’s Jodie Bryant and BBC Introducing Melita Dennett, rising star Maya Lakhani is a firm fave here at GIHE. Inspired by ‘00s teen movie prom scenes, latest single ‘Fall For Me’ flows with a soaring shimmering emotion, as jangling hooks provide the backdrop for Lakhani’s rich vocals, creating a heartfelt alt-rock anthem. (ML)

ettie – ‘The Song I Scream In The Shower’
The new single from queer pop-punk artist ettie, ‘The Song I Scream In The Shower’ offers a perfect nostalgia-tinged ‘revenge-bop’. Propelled by a fierce fun-filled energy and catchy angst-driven refrains, it reflects on the “age-old coping mechanism of getting all your feelings out in the shower.” I can’t wait to hear more catchy anthems from ettie! (ML)

Catbear – ‘Who Cares?’
Having been part of the dreamiest of weekends with us last month, supporting Roller Derby at two consecutive sold out shows in London and Brighton, Brighton-based duo CATBEAR have now shared a catchy new single. Propelled by an uplifting fizzing energy and fierce driving beats, a raw emotion shines through the lush vocals, offering a glistening slice of empowering electro-pop; a shimmering ode to the draining emotions that come with social anxiety (a sentiment I can very much relate to!). Of the track, singer/guitarist Zoe explains: “The song sounds upbeat, but underneath it’s me trying to stay grounded – reminding myself it’s okay to show up, be a bit awkward, and not care so much what anyone thinks.” ‘Who Cares’ will feature on Catbear’s upcoming second album, due for release later this year. (ML)

Beauty Sleep – ‘Radical Happiness’
Recently signed to Alcopop! Records with the announcement of the upcoming release of their second album, Derry faves Beauty Sleep have now shared a colourful new single to celebrate. Fizzing with a glitchy energy and swirling uplifting emotion, album “theme song” ‘Radical Happiness’ offers a twinkling, empowering ode to self care and embracing doing things that bring you joy. Of the inspiration behind the track, the duo explain: “Our mental health was so low and we were such people pleasers to a fault that prioritising our emotions and desires felt radical. So we embarked on figuring out how to find Radical Happiness by living it—we did all the things we thought we weren’t good enough for, things we thought we would do ‘when we were successful,’ or ‘when we had more money,’ or when the perfect conditions were just so…” The Whole Damn Cake, the upcoming second album from Beauty Sleep, is set for release in October this year. (ML)

ZAND – ‘TOES!’
I’ve been following the well deserved rise of “sewerstar” ZAND since we interviewed them on our GIHE radio show back in 2020 (listen back here) – so I was chuffed to see this gritty single ‘TOES!’ in my inbox. It’s their first piece of new music since November 2024, equally as inspired by Eminem as it is Nine Inch Nails. ZAND is currently working on their debut album, which I can’t wait to hear in full. Twin Rains – ‘The Evil That You Know (Let It Go)’
Toronto dream-pop duo Twin Rains released one of my favourite tracks of 2023 (‘You’re The Only One’) so I was thrilled to see an email from the band (buried in my GIHE inbox) sharing new music with me! Described as “My Bloody Valentine meets Oasis in the dystopian present” this new track ‘The Evil That You Know (Let It Go)’ is full of their trademark intoxicating riffs, dreamy vocals and driving beats. Errunhrd – ‘Don’t Drink Chemicals’
Canadian songwriter and producer Shirin Ghoujalou aka Errunhrd has shifted from dream-pop to dark electronica on her latest album, Everything I’ve Ever Known, and I am here for it! This change in musical direction was inspired by a need to explore parts of her psyche that she had previously ignored, experimenting with MIDI string orchestration, vocoders, granular synthesis and syncopated melodies to help her carve a path towards self-love and acceptance. Venus In Noise – ‘In The Sun’
A jagged ray of sonic sunshine from London-based duo Venus In Noise here! This new single is full of the pair’s trademark dark electronics and infectious rhythms, which they’ve been sharing with crowds through their live performances – including a show at East London’s Sebright Arms – earlier this month. Elaine Mai ft. Faye O’Rourke – ‘AIM’
Irish electronic artist Elaine Mai is gearing up to release her second album, For Us, on 19th September. This collaborative track ‘AIM’ – featuring Soda Blonde vocalist Faye O’Rourke – is an exciting taste of what we can expect from the talented producer. Inspired by “generational trauma and its lingering effects,” O’Rourke’s heartfelt vocals soar above Mai’s potent dance beats and shape-shifting electronics, showcasing her instinct for crafting melodic and surprisingly emotive dance anthems. Nastazia Bazil – ‘Call Me Habibi’
Having released her debut album this week, Lebanese artist Nastazia Bazil never believed that she would be able be able to play music that other people would want to hear, but since forming a band at First Timers Fest a few years back she has been proved wrong; a familiar face on the London DIY live circuit, she has been frequently charming audiences across the city with their unique, immersive sounds. Taken from the album, ‘Call Me Habibi’ offers a truly stirring anthem, reflecting on feelings of being torn – knowing that she can’t move back to Lebanon due to political unrest, but feeling homesick and missing simple things such as her mum’s cooking. From Beirut To Anywhere, the debut album from Nastazia Bazil, is out now. Listen/download on bandcamp. (ML)

Lōwli – ‘Ground Above You’
“‘Ground Above You’ explores feeling lost in your sense of self, while struggling to find purpose and understanding in an often unsettling and disjointed world,” explains Irish composer and songwriter Lōwli about her latest single. A beguiling blend of lilting keys, disarming vocals and ethereal string sounds, the track beautifully showcases Lōwli’s ability to transport listeners to another realm – making her one of my favourite new music discoveries this year. Maria Somerville – ‘Spring’
Lifted from her captivating new album, Luster, this lush track by Irish musician Maria Somerville is a tonic for tired ears. Released via 4AD, Somerville’s latest full length was written and recorded in Connemara in the artist’s home county of Galway. Energised by the fondness and familiarity of her surroundings, she created twelve tracks that shimmer with sensitivity and a serene sense of self-confidence, with this single ‘Spring’ being a perfect example of both. The New Eves – ‘Rivers Run Red’
Team GIHE caught Brighton four-piece The New Eves live for the first time at The Great Escape Festival in May, and we were captivated by their incendiary blend of classical instrumentation and punk spirit. This track features on their debut album, The New Eve Is Rising, set for release on 1st August via Transgressive Records. ‘Rivers Run Red’ is an amalgamation of the band’s beginnings – from guitarist/violinist Violet pouring blood on to herself during early performances, to drummer, flutist & vocalist Ella’s heartfelt teenage poetry – showcasing the power and originality of the ensemble’s musical vision. We’ll definitely be at their London show at Hoxton Hall on 7th October. (KC)

Nadah El Shazly – ‘Laini Tani’
Egyptian, Montreal-based producer, vocalist, composer and actor Nadah El Shazly has released her highly anticipated second album, showcasing her immersive, genre-defying sounds and ability to fuse traditional Arabic influences with a more avant-garde improvisational instrumentation. Title track ‘Laini Tani’ offers a mesmerising insight into the sounds El Shazly is able to create; flowing with a delicate, twinkling musicality, it builds with a subtle soaring power and glitchy energy into a truly spellbinding ballad. Laini Tani, the new album from Nadah El Shazly, is out now via One Little Independent Records. (ML)

Lightheaded – ‘The View From Your Room’
Formed back in 2017, New Jersey’s Lightheaded are set to release their second album later this month, and to celebrate, they’ve shared this shimmering new single. ‘The View From Your Room’ ripples with a cinematic musicality and lilting energy, as gorgeous sunny vibes emanate with shades of the likes of indie-pop faves Camera Obscura or Best Coast.
Thinking, Dreaming, Scheming, the upcoming new album from Lightheaded, is out on 27th June via Skep Wax. (ML)

Ailsa Tully – ‘Self Soothing’
The first single taken from her upcoming debut album, ‘Self Soothing’ offers a welcome return from Welsh artist and GIHE fave Ailsa Tully. Offering a vulnerable sentimentality, a delicate musicality glistens as Tully’s distinctive crystalline vocals flow seamlessly with a stirring raw emotion throughout. With its added immersive synth-driven layers and subtle sense of angst that ripples under its surface, a gritty edge is added to this innovative artist’s trademark heartfelt splendour. (ML)

Rats-Tails – ‘Public Domain’
Having blown us away with their unique eclectic sounds and immersive energy playing for us last year at The Shacklewell Arms, South East London faves Rats-Tails have now released their first single of 2025. Flowing with a lilting folk-strewn musicality and mystical allure, ‘Public Domain’ reflects on feelings of burn-out, the intrusive thoughts that accompany it and the tension between art and commodification. As front-person Courtney McMahon’s ethereal vocals shimmer throughout, a dreamily psychedelic soundscape is created, cementing Rats-Tails as an innovative band impossible to pigeon hole into any one genre. (ML)

Kate Nash – ‘Germ’
Amidst all the terrifying regression of policies and ridiculous attempts by those in power to curtail the rights of trans folk, being an ally is more important than ever before. So, it’s been great to hear Kate Nash use her platform to spread the word and speak out against so-called feminists who are set on excluding trans women from public spaces and inciting fear and hatred with new single ‘GERM’. With its direct lyricism taking aim at these ‘Exclusionary Regressive Misogynists’, Nash explains: “I am left uneasy as I see behaviours we would otherwise or previously label as intolerance or bullying become normalised & even celebrated by the media & in society. Dismantling systems of oppression lies at the very core of feminism. If you are transphobic, therefore, you are not a feminist. Welcome to your rebrand, GERM.” Just to clarify, as Nash states in the song, “I’ve never felt threatened by a trans person” and will continue to stand by my trans siblings today and every day. LISTEN: GIHE on Soho Radio with Comic Sans (03.03.25)

Tash, Kate and Mari were back on Soho Radio this month, playing plenty of new music tunes from some of their favourite female, non-binary and LGBTQIA+ artists.

Lauren and Rachel from London-based queer punk-rock band Comic Sans also dropped into the studio to talk about the evolution of their cathartic single ‘Mr President‘, what it was like supporting Aussie punk icons Amyl & The Sniffers on their French tour date in Toulouse last year, and how Comic Sans has helped them to build a community of like-minded LGBTQ+ fans, friends and allies.

INTERVIEW: ALT BLK ERA

Battling their demons and bringing the noise, ALT BLK ERA’s debut album Rave Immortal is a tenacious blend of jagged electronics and racing beats designed to dissolve the pain of their past. Released last week via Earache Records, the record cements the genre-defying sister duo’s status as ones to watch in the alternative music world.

The last time we caught up with Nyrobi (20) and Chaya (17), it was 2023 and they were on the cusp of releasing their debut EP, Freak Show. The five tracks that formed it displayed their vivid personalities and antagonistic spirit – with Nyrobi’s vocals possessing a fiery ‘SOLAR’ energy and Chaya’s voice veering into more mystical ‘LUNAR’ realms. With Rave Immortal, ALT BLK ERA retain their heavy and undefinable sound, but they veer directly into rave territory to exorcise feelings of fear and inadequacy – providing a potent statement of self autonomy in the process.

“I think the concept of it…going from really human emotions – our struggles and our pain and our worries – and being able to transcend that and have it become larger than life, I just think that’s something quite important,” offers Nyrobi, when asked what she’s most proud of about ALT BLK ERA’s debut LP. “It’s important to feel like you can escape reality and that’s what the album does.”

Rave Immortal is largely inspired by Nyrobi coming to terms with living in chronic pain due to a disabling illness that she was diagnosed with during her teens in 2020. It was cathartic for the pair to write the record and to recognise how much they relied on each other as sisters during this time. Nyrobi has only recently been vocal about her experiences of disability online, so what was it that made her feel like she was able to speak out about it this on the record?

“Originally, I chose not to speak about it because I was afraid that people would say ‘don’t book her for this show, she’s disabled, she’s in pain and tired all the time’, or that people would think that we only got the MOBO nomination because it was a sympathy thing,” the vocalist reveals. “So now that we’ve played Download, we’ve played Glastonbury and we’ve headlined a stage at Reading & Leeds, it feels like we’ve done enough to prove that I can do anything that I want to do.”

This defiant spirit is something that has resonated with ALT BLK ERA’s fans. It was important to Nyrobi to use her voice and her platform with the band to highlight the resilience of the disabled community. “My disability doesn’t restrain me in other ways that people might think,” she shares. “My disability, it just came out of nowhere. The doctors are saying that it’s likely to just disappear one day too. Before I announced it, I’d be out and about in town and I’d have my stick or something and people would come up to me and ask if something had happened to my leg, and I’m like ‘oh my goodness, I don’t want to lie’ so now I feel really refreshed that it’s out in the open and I can be myself.

So, I just thought I can be honest on our debut album. I wanted to write about it and I wanted to be a voice in that community. We have so many disabled fans. Before I told anyone about it online, we had someone in a wheelchair come to our show in Manchester. I don’t know what compelled me to tell them [about my disability] but I told them and I thanked them for coming out, because I know how hard it is as a disabled person to leave the house. I just wanted to say that I really appreciated them coming to the show and I shared that with them. They didn’t know how special that was for me, they were probably like ‘why is she talking to me?’”

Nyrobi laughs with the last sentence. The support from both Chaya and the band’s fanbase has motivated her to push past her chronic pain and pursue her dreams of being an artist. We’ve seen this dream materialise in front of us too. We were blown away by ALT BLK ERA’s tenacious spirit when they played live for us at our Get In Her Ears gig night at The Shacklewell Arms in July 2023, supporting Straight Girl. Their riotous energy and powerful stage presence has since led to bookings at some of the UK’s biggest festivals, as well as playing for Radio 1 DJ Alyx Holcombe’s own live music night, MANTRA. Both girls express gratitude for these opportunities and are humbled by the community aspect of both Get In Her Ears and MANTRA.

“Alyx has been one of the few industry people that have supported us,” Nyrobi enthuses. “We’ve experienced so many gatekeepers and people telling us that we’re too young and we’re not ready, but she played ‘Mosh Girl Summer’ on Radio 1 in 2022, when we were 16 and 18 years old. She was supporting us from the first year of our music career. So to play her MANTRA night, we really wanted to make sure it was as big as possible. It was also just really good fun. The crowd was so good and the energy was perfect. You know when good people just bring other good people around them? It was just proper warm and fun without any strings attached.”

For Chaya, one of her favourite things about playing live is getting to perform Rave Immortal track ‘Catch Me If You Can’. “We’ve had that song unreleased for quite a while and I’m so happy we’re releasing it because it’s such a banger,” she enthuses. In terms of favourite tracks, Nyrobi notes that ‘I’m Normally Like This’ is still a big crowd-pleaser, but ‘My Drummer’s Girlfriend’ is a standout track for her because of the “opportunities” it’s given the band, which included a collaboration with American indie rock legends Wheatus.

Frontman Brendan B. Brown saw the girls play live at Download Festival back in 2024 and they connected via social media after they missed an opportunity to talk face-to-face backstage in the press tent. Back then, ALT BLK ERA hadn’t released ‘My Drummer’s Girlfriend’ as a single, but the girls sent it over to Brendan to see what he thought. Before they knew it, Wheatus were flying over from New York to work with the girls on a remix at Spotify Studios.

“Working with Wheatus has just been huge, we learned so much from them,” Nyrobi shares. “We were really honoured to have them travel so far to work with us on our song. They were so respectful. They were so caring and they gave us so much advice. They took it 10/10 seriously and they treated us with so much respect, it was almost surprising. We didn’t expect that. I feel like it’s quite rare to find people that are so genuine and full of love in the music industry, but they actually really cared. They weren’t gate-keeping or anything.”

This ethos of collaboration, equality and respect is something that translates both on and off stage for ALT BLK ERA. The lyrics to their songs center around celebrating your individuality both online and in real life, as they encourage their fans to express themselves in a safe space and speak up if they need support or help, particularly at gigs. ALT BLK ERA are currently on their own UK tour and they’ve set up a Discord channel to keep in contact with their fans. “People make friends in there,” Chaya shares. “We do ‘fit checks and everything, people show us what they’re going to be wearing to shows. We’ve got some ALT BLK ERA jacket patches happening as well!”

For Nyrobi, it’s incredibly important that ALT BLK ERA shows are safe spaces. “We just want to make it really clear that us and our whole team are on your side,” she shares. “We’re not standing for any foolishness. Even if I’m performing and someone looks uncomfortable and they’re trying to signal me, we’re gonna have to stop and find out what’s going on. Because one [bad] experience can really stop someone from going outside, going to gigs and being seen, you know?”

Fuelled by this determination, it looks like ALT BLK ERA are set to dominate more stages and gain even more momentum in 2025, and Nyrobi is keen to keep the ball rolling. “You’ll have to interview us before our second album and see where we are then!” she says – a statement we’ll happily hold both her and Chaya too.

GIHE: Albums & EPs of 2024

After sharing our Tracks Of 2024 last week, the Get In Her Ears team want to shine a light on some of the brilliant Albums & EPs that have been released during the last 12 months. These eclectic offerings resonated with us and we’ll be talking about them long into the future. Huge thanks to all of the bands and artists who submitted music to us this year. 

In alphabetical order…here are our top Albums & EPs of 2024 (including multiple Honorable Mentions at the end because we hate leaving people out…)

ALBUMS

Beckon – Between the Bridge And The Tree

Having been a big fan of bands like Suggested Friends and Chorusgirl, I’ve been following songwriter and musician Faith MacNeil Taylor for a number of years now and always find myself completely immersed in each of their heartfelt creations. This year, with new project Beckon (FKA Athabaska), Faith has collaborated with a group of five other wonderful musicians to create queer alt-folk anthems. We were lucky enough to have them play for us at one of our gigs at The Shacklewell Arms back in March and I was utterly spellbound, so I knew I would like new album Between The Bridge and The Tree. But it really is quite something quite special. Alongside Faith’s distinctive exquisite emotion-rich vocals, lilting folk-strewn melodies flow throughout with a raw heartfelt grace; a truly stirring creation of resonant offerings. Between The Bridge And The Tree was released in October.

BERRIES – BERRIES

BERRIES’ much-anticipated album captures the electrifying energy of their live performances, with a set of well-crafted songs by some very skilled musicians. Their signature guitar riffs shine throughout, paired with pounding, energetic drums and commanding basslines that keep the tracks driving forward. The tracks combine catchy melodies, dynamic musicality and at times, a satisfying thick wall of sound, bringing to mind early 2000s indie bands like The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well as garage rock influences, resulting in a sound that feels both nostalgic and modern. The album is also balanced with some quieter and delicate moments like ‘Balance’ – the album’s single acoustic track. Overall, this is an album that expertly builds tension, keeping listeners captivated from start to finish.

Brimheim – RATKING

Multi-instrumentalist Helena Heinesen Rebensdorff finds strength in self scrutiny on her excellent second album, RATKING. Released at the end of March, the LP is just as raw as the Danish-Faroese artist’s debut offering, can’t hate myself into a different shape (2022), but on RATKING, she vivaciously embraces remnants of shame, hyper-sensitivity and unrequited love and sets them to a more melodic, pop-tinged backdrop. The result is a witty, cathartic reflection on the contradictions of love, underscored by her audaciously dark humour.

Whether it’s the fully fleshed band sound and distinctive instrumentation on tracks like ‘Dancing In The Rubble’ and ‘Keep Bleeding Diamonds’, the infectious pop melodies on singles ‘Literally Everything’, ‘Brand New Woman’ and ‘Normies’, or the sonically more expansive tracks like ‘No Liver, No Lungs’ and ‘Surgeon’, Brimheim and esteemed producer Søren Buhl Lassen (Blaue Blume) have crafted an eclectic and exhilarating collection of lush alt-pop anthems. Watching Brimheim perform her new album at The Lexington earlier this year was a live highlight for me too. Her confidence in her artistic vision and revelation that she was almost ready to give up making music just a few years ago was truly inspiring.

Elsa Hewitt – Chaos Emeralds

Written and recorded intermittently over the course of four years, electronic artist & producer Elsa Hewitt’s eighth album, Chaos Emeralds, is a deeply evocative listening experience. Her intuitive mix of lilting vocals, hypnotic synth loops and eclectic field recordings have helped reduce the cortisol levels in my body significantly this year.

Her improvisational writing style pulls you into a warm hypnosis, where notions such as ‘Unimaginable Pain’ are transformed into soothing electronic lullabies. Her lyrics were originally poems which she penned separately, blending them with her music at different intervals throughout the creative process. The album’s title – a nod to Sonic The Hedgehog – hints at the paradoxical way in which life presents us with difficulties in order to teach us resilience and recovery. This is something Elsa Hewitt has mastered on many of her previous records, but on this collection of tracks she truly achieves something special. She has been prolific this year and she is currently in the process of teasing her ninth album, Dominant Heartstrings, which is set for release in the near future. (KC)

Fightmilk – No Souvenirs

I’ve made no secret of my super fandom of Fightmilk over the years. I’ve been following them since they first played live for us back in 2018 and now – after having had the honour of them headlining many more of our gigs and being obsessed with their albums Not With That Attitude and Contender – my fandom has only continued to grow with the recent release of this year’s No Souvenirs. Reflecting on themes of getting older, particularly as a woman in music, the album exquisitely showcases the band’s ability to hone their sound, creating perfect punk-pop; angsty and uplifting in equal measure. Instantly catchy singalong anthems, combining their trademark tongue-in-cheek wit with a swirling energy and gritty raw emotion.

From fuzzy sentimentality to fierce tirades against patriarchal society, No Souvenirs is a perfect culmination of how Fightmilk have continued to refine their sound. With shades of noughties punk-pop, combined with an injection of fresh queer joy and raging emotion, it’s at once cathartic, validating and empowering. But, most importantly, fun. A sound that’s uniquely Fightmilk; truly distinctive in its colourful charisma, but consistently evolving into something more. No Souvenirs was released in November via Fika Recordings/INH Records. Happy Accidents – Edit Undo

I’ve been a mega fan of Happy Accidents since first falling in love with the South London based duo at the late, great Indietracks Festival in 2018, and have been an avid follower of the active roles that both Rich and Phoebe have continued to play in the DIY music scene over the years, including their other musical projects, ME REX and Cheerbleederz. This year, they released their first album in a few years, the gorgeous Edit Undo, which marked a really fantastic return form combining the band’s trademark jangly hooks and emotion-rich twinkling harmonies with additional experimental, electronic soundscapes. I was lucky enough to catch their first live show in five years at Paper Dress Vintage in September, and it was a really special evening. Plus, Phoebe is also responsible for one of my other highlights of the year – learning drums at a First Timers Festival workshop with GIHE pal Kate. She was a really wonderful teacher, and inspired me to continue learning! Edit Undo was out in September via Alcopop! Records. (ML)

HAVVK – To Fall Asleep

Inspired by the complicated nature of sleep and bassist & vocalist Julie Hawks’s own experiences of insomnia, HAVVK’s third album, To Fall Asleep (released via VETA Records) is an urgent, cathartic listen that beguiles the senses and rattles the nerves in equal measure. The Irish alt-rock trio have been favourites of ours since they played our debut GIHE gig at The Finsbury pub back in 2016, and it’s been a privilege to watch them develop as a band over the last eight years.

Formed of front person Julie, guitarist Matthew Harris and former Bitch Falcon drummer Nigel Kenny, on To Fall Asleep, HAVVK interrogate the things that keep us awake at night. Whether they’re charging ahead on tracks like ‘Expiry’ – a vital anthem about the gendered double standards of ageing – or ruminating on anxiety on ‘Waste Of Time’, they create stirring, emotionally charged tracks that resonate long after the record has stopped spinning. It was a real pleasure to hear the band play some of their new tracks live this year when they headlined our GIHE gig at The Shacklewell Arms in March. (KC)

Jæd – I Loved The Gauntlet And There Was No Other Way

London-based, Irish-Puerto Rican musician Jæd played a GIHE gig for us in October 2022 supporting Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra and we were all blown away by her unique talent. Her stage presence, dynamic vocal range and virtuoso guitar playing have all translated beautifully into the tracks that form her debut album, I Loved The Gauntlet And There Was No Other Way, released via cult Irish label The Delphi Label. The record is an eclectic cacophony of guitar sounds inspired by the uncertainty and hardship that Jæd has lived through, and it’s a testament to the endurance of her creative spirit. ‘Very Fond’ is my personal favourite, but every song on the album is a gem. Midwife – No Depression In Heaven

On her fourth LP, No Depression In Heaven, Colorado based musician and producer Madeline Johnston aka Midwife pays tribute to life on the road, reflecting on the eccentricities of a transient existence and the characters that colour the views between locations on the map. Her ambient shoegaze sounds pacify the pain of the grief that informed many of the tracks. Whether it’s an ode to her trusty tour vehicle on ‘Vanessa’ or a cover of ‘Better Off Alone’ which was originally released in 1999 by European popstar Alice Deejay, Midwife treats these things with equal parts grace and grit. No Depression in Heaven is a beautiful body of work full of her poetic lyrical motifs and hazy lullaby-like reverb. (KC)

Our Girl – The Good Kind

Having fallen completely in love with their 2018 debut, Stranger Today, my adoration of London trio Our Girl has only grown with the release of this year’s The Good Kind. Reflecting on poignant themes such as the heartbreak of seeing illness affect someone you love, challenges faced due to gender and sexuality, and the strength that can be found in community, the overarching feeling that permeates whilst listening is a gentle, comforting optimism. Propelled by a whirring energy and brit-pop inspired scuzzy hooks, each track fizzes with a glistening heartfelt emotion as Soph Nathan’s distinctive vocals ripple with an understated powerful grace, creating a deeply resonant shimmering splendour. The Good Kind was released in November via Bella Union. (ML)

Pink Suits – Dystopian Hellscape

Having released their blazing debut, Political Child, back in 2021, Margate duo pink suits released their second album, Dystopian Hellscape, this year. Inspired by the relentless over saturation of bleak news cycles, it loses none of the band’s politically aggressive, anti-Tory, anti-Fascist, Feminist Queer Energy. Exploring the effects that modern society and neoliberal politics can have on our mental health with the duo’s trademark tenacious spirit and raw musicality, it reflects on themes of self-care, grief, gender identity, sexuality and queer joy, showcasing pink suits’ ability to channel frustration into a perfect raging catharsis. In addition to creating these necessary punk anthems, throughout 2024 Lennie and Ray brought tonnes of queer joy performing as a country duo – on tour with Paisley James, at their own completely wonderful Queer Cuntry event at The Southbank Centre, and as part of our GIHE queer country night at Sebright Arms with Dolly Parton tribute band, The Dumb Blondes (more on this coming in our ‘Personal Highlights’ feature). Dystopian Hellscape was released in April. (ML)

Rubie – Seek Sisters

Having been fans of exquisite songstress Rubie for a while now, both as a solo artist and as part of the incredible F*Choir, we were delighted that she released a stunning new album this year. Flowing with a swirling majestic allure, Seek Sisters interweaves quirky jazz-tinged melodies with a soaring musicality and Rubie’s distinctive heartfelt vocals, creating something truly spellbinding; each and every note glistening with an empowering heartfelt grace. We were lucky enough to have Rubie perform the album in full for us at The Divine in November, and it really did feel like such a special night; accompanied by a full band and choir, she completely captivated us all with her shimmering joyous energy and stirring creations. Seek Sisters was released in September. (ML)

Schande – Once Around

Noise-pop-shoegaze-tinged legends and friends of GIHE, Schande, this year released their debut album, Once Around. Following 2019’s EP Pedigree, and having charmed our ears playing live for us a number of times over the last few years, this new release perfectly captures the band’s immersive, shimmering soundscapes. Flowing with a lilting twinkling grace, it truly is a thing of pure beauty as front-person Jen cements herself as a songwriter capable of exquisitely conveying the fragility of life with each rich sonic tapestry, as a resonant raw emotion ripples throughout. Such a dreamy collection of songs that I find impossible to listen to just once, but instead need to play at least twice, or even three times, around in a row! Once Around was released in April 2024 via Thurston and Eva Moore’s record label, The Daydream Library Series. (ML)

Whitelands – Night-bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day

Initially formed from DIY grassroots music initiatives like First Timers Fest and Decolonise Fest, Whitelands are gently dismantling the expectations and stereotypes surrounding the traditionally white-male oriented guitar music scene. Released via iconic shoegaze label Sonic Cathedral, their debut album, Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day, is a disarming reflection on everything from politics, philosophy (the album title is taken from the book ‘The Prophet’ by Kahlil Gibran) to ADHD, depression and heartbreak.

Vocalist and guitarist Etienne’s songwriting is deeply poetic, something which becomes more apparent when you read the accompanying lyric sheet on the album’s vinyl insert. His soft floating vocals are accompanied by lead guitarist Michael’s soaring riffs, drummer Jagun’s driving beats and Vanessa’s brooding bass lines, all of which intermittently push the record into both melancholic and euphoric territory. It was wonderful to have Whitelands with us in the studio for our Soho Radio show in February this year talking about their debut record. Having caught them live at Hammersmith Apollo and EARTH supporting Slowdive, as well as at Cro Cro Land and their album launch show at Rough Trade East, Whitelands have provided some of my favourite musical memories of 2024, both live and on record. EPs

all cats are beautiful – Just Kids

In 2021, London based duo All Cats Are Beautiful released their gorgeous mini album The Things We Made. However, playing gigs and writing new songs then fell to the back burner when Ky from the band’s partner of ten years suddenly tragically passed away that same year. Now, three years on, Ky and Elena finally felt ready to share new music with their EP Just Kids; a heart achingly poignant reflection on love and loss. Delving into stark reflections on the pain that comes with losing someone that you love so intensely, the EP glistens with a raw vulnerability and emotion alongside its twinkling electro soundscapes, creating a truly beautifully cathartic and honest collection. The band perfectly summarise – “grief is just love with no place to go.” Just Kids was released in October via Peach Records. (ML)

Piney Gir – Cosmic Upside Down 

This year prolific artist (and self-proclaimed witch) Kansas-born Piney Gir released her new EP, Cosmic Upside Down. Propelled by a twinkling, lilting energy and Piney’s distinctive lush honeysweet vocals, each track on the EP oozes a sparkling immersive splendour. Whilst its spiritual roots remain evident throughout, it also touches on themes ranging from climate change to feminism; offering a stirring yet uplifting reflection on the world today. In addition to the EP release, 2024 also marked twenty years since Piney shared her first album, Peakahokahoo, and to celebrate we helped her promote a special 20th anniversary gig at The Lexington with a superstar line-up of Anat Ben-David (Chicks On Speed) and Psycho Delia (Robots In Disguise) – a really dreamy evening! Cosmic Upside Down was released in August via No Distance Records. (ML)

SPIDER – object of desire

I’ve been watching Irish alt-pop artist SPIDER grow since the release of her debut single ‘Water Sign’ in 2021, and it’s been a joy to see her talents recognised in the alternative rock scene this year. Her third EP, object of desire, is bursting with riotous, angst-ridden tunes about coming-of-age in an antagonistic world that tries to dictate this deeply personal process. The title track is a formidable anthem that perfectly outlines all that SPIDER is capable of as an artist; her clear intonation, candid lyricism and loud-and-quiet grunge and pop punk dynamics are showcased perfectly. It was a privilege to watch her perform AT her debut London headline show at The Camden Assembly earlier this year. Read my full review here. (KC)

Softcult – Heaven

Marking a heavier development in their sound, Heaven is the fourth EP from Canadian twin sibling duo Softcult. By blending shoegaze sensibilities with dream-pop melodies and Riot Grrrl politics, Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn tackle the pressures of existing in patriarchal society, the breakdown of platonic and romantic relationships and the fluctuating nature of mental health. Heaven is a cohesive, considered record that offers respite through heavy reverb and gloomy vocals, which the pair have perfected on this latest offering. Guitarist & vocalist Mercedes spoke eloquently about the inspirations behind the EP in an interview with me earlier this year. Read the full feature here. (KC)

Queen Of Nothing – The Pull

Recorded to tape at Middle Farm Studios with acclaimed producer Peter Miles (Torres, Orla Gartland and Dodie) independent alt-folk artist Abi Crisp aka Queen Of Nothing released her debut EP, The Pull, in November this year. It’s an atmospheric, brooding reflection on what it feels like to let go of heartbreak, uncertainty and fear and emerge as a truer version of ones self. I love her blend of shimmering and gritty guitar tones, tender vocals and dramatic volume shifts, which are epitomised on my favourite track ‘How Does It Feel’. (KC)
