Track Of The Day: All Day Breakfast Cafe – ‘Old School Struggling’

An uplifting, disco-inspired ode to dealing with the pressures of everyday life, South London based disco band All Day Breakfast Cafe have released their debut single ‘Old School Struggling’. Fuelled by funky rhythms, jazzy instrumentation and Loucin Moskofian’s rich vocals, the track is a playful take on how we deal with the relentless cycle of trying to make ends meet whilst simultaneously trying to live our best lives.

Inspired by the same struggle that laid the foundations for disco music back in the 1970s, All Day Breakfast Cafe pay tribute to the empowering history of hope and hustling that sits alongside trying to survive and thrive in an unequal world. Inspired by the likes of Chaka Khan, Earth, Wind & Fire and jazz legends Art Blakey and Ella Fitzgerald, the band formed just before lockdown 2020 and have been busy working on their Their debut EP, Builder’s Brew (a play on Miles Davis’ psychedelic jazz album Bitches Brew) which they’re set to release this autumn.

If you’re familiar with the feeling of burnout, worrying about how you’re going to make your rent, and working a 9-5 alongside all of your side hustles, then ‘Old School Struggling’ will resonate with, and re-energise you too.

LISTEN: LegPuppy – ‘Secret Friend’ (feat. Josefin Öhrn)

A slow-burning, atmospheric new offering; South London band LegPuppy have collaborated with award-winning Swedish musician Josefin Öhrn on their latest track, ‘Secret Friend’. Independently released on Valentine’s Day, the new song is a smoldering four minutes of electro-psych sound.

When LegPuppy first heard Josefin Öhrn + the Liberation’s album Mirage, they described it as “like discovering the Velvet Underground for the first time.” The band instantly knew they wanted to collaborate with Swedish Grammy nominated Öhrn, and ‘Secret Friend’ was the result. Öhrn’s exquisite French accent floats above the band’s moody music, and contrasts well with the accompanying male vocal.

LISTEN: Paint Factory – ‘Listen To Her Speak’

A brooding, atmospheric, electro-pop gem; London trio Paint Factory have shared their latest single ‘Listen To Her Speak’. The track is a reflection on the current environmental crisis, and how governments continue to ignore activist’s pleas to act now.

Influenced by the likes of The 1975, Massive Attack & Tune Yards, Paint Factory named themselves after the building they create their sounds in; a converted paint factory in South West London. Over dense beats, colourful synth textures, and clear vocals, the band vent their various frustrations about the state of the planet on ‘Listen To Her Speak’.

EP: Gravey – ‘Who’s Yer Daddy?’

South London band Gravey’s debut EP Who’s Yer Daddy, is all gravy, baby. I know that sounds cheap, but I had to and it is. This is a band that know their way around how a song should be, with tight bass openings and gravelled vocals that puts all forebears to shame.

Delicious guitar licks put an extra finesse on three tracks that may very well be one of indie London’s sounds of the future. As broad a spectrum as that is, Gravey slides (un)comfortably into the category of the impossible to define. The vocals roar, the guitar soars, and the layers of music meld as they should.

Each listen is better than the last, and band members Soraya Fernandez, Nick White, Sian Bride and Andrea Adriano have done wonders turning their self-proclaimed slutpunk into punk rock with soul. Adriano and White are also responsible for the incredibly neat production.

Every track on the EP has a different message, with the lyrical standout Community Health taking on the mental health crisis with the ever-true statement: “It’s another class war.” On the other hand, ‘Enlighten Me’ is an intergalactic love song (isn’t love intergalactic in and of itself?) and opening banger ‘Self Esteem’ is about loving yourself.

I’m still working on that personally, but what I can say for sure is I love this EP. The esteem can come later, hopefully dripping with that smooth marriage of wah-wah whammy guitar, bass, drums, and steaming hot vocals like that of Gravey… Baby.
