ALBUM: The Gravity Drive – ‘The Wildlight’

The Gravity Drive are a harmony driven, alternative pop band led by spouses Elijah and Ava Wolf. They independently release records on their own label from their house near Bridport in Dorset. Having received acclaim from the likes of BBC Radio 2, their second album, The Wildlight, features a series of powerful songs that promote self-worth, self-discovery and self-actualisation. They cover different styles (psychedelia, pop, dance) and embellish the atmosphere of the songs by experimenting with sounds. The result is an upbeat, inspirational album which showcases their range.

Opener, ‘Hits Like a Fix’, is a gentle intro; a piano-led pop ballad, with cinematic leanings, the prophetic lyricism shines through with a poignancy – “we lost our freedom to the fever again”, suggesting the chemistry of fated love.

Loving relationships are also explored in songs such as ‘Shooting Star’, ‘Inside Out’, and the beautifully lyrical ‘Forever’ – inducing romanticised longings.

There are also heavier moments… as more rock-inspired songs also stand out with enlightening themes of self-empowerment. For example, title track ‘The Wildlight’, ‘Kaleidoscope’, and closing track ‘Wake of the Dawn’ have a spiritual and theatrical feel in their exquisite layering of voices and thrashing guitars, creating a majestic, sweeping atmosphere.

The collection ends with a bang to the rallying cry of “This is a call”… And so it is. This album will have you believing in the power of Love, and the light at the end of the tunnel. What more do you need in these strange times?

The Wildlight is out now. Listen on Spotify or buy on iTunes.

WATCH: The Gravity Drive – ‘Hits Like A Fix’

The Gravity Drive are a harmony driven, alternative pop band led by Elijah and Ava Wolf. Having received support and frequent radio plays from Radio 2, BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing, they independently release records on their own label from their house near Bridport in Dorset.

The new single and ’60s inspired video, ‘Hits like a Fix’ is a piano-led pop ballad with Ava taking the lead vocals. Opening with slow, wistful keys, Ava’s seductive voice comes in with a sense of underlying drama: “I made the call, you called the sting”.

With a sense of something magnetic happening between the song’s characters, the chorus is more uptempo, with light percussion and delicate mixing adding to the emotional elements. The second verse intensifies, however, oozing a fervent passion: “we lost our freedom to the fever again… You’re the remedy that helps me forget.”

Both the song and video are beautifully cinematic, suggesting the chemistry of fated love. Like a pull of gravity, it will draw you in, giving you much to anticipate from the band’s upcoming second album, The Wildlight, due for release in 2020.

‘Hits Like A Fix’ is out now on all digital platforms.

Track Of The Day: The Gravity Drive – ‘Shooting Star’

Based near my beloved Bridport (West Dorset), The Gravity Drive have been delivering their ethereal brand of indie pop for a couple of years now – to the acclaim of the likes of BBC Radio 2, 6Music’s Chris Hawkins and Mojo Magazine – and have now shared a charming new single.

As twinkly as the name suggests, ‘Shooting Star’ flows with delicate strummed hooks and glistening vocal harmonies to create a swirling, musically rich pop ballad. Soaring in its effervescent, emotion-strewn splendour, it’s a simply captivating delight for the ears, and a perfect accompaniment to the approaching festive season.

‘Shooting Star’ is out now, and make sure you catch The Gravity Drive live at our next night at The Finsbury on 8th December!
