Track Of The Day: HAVVK – ’52’

Having completely mesmerised us on many occasions with their immersive live shows, and captivated our ears with a number of incredible, politically driven offerings, total faves HAVVK are back with a brand new single.

Oozing a stark, stirring emotion, ’52’ is about the extreme political dynamics in the run up to the Brexit vote in 2017. With the soaring, celestial splendour and gritty raw emotion of front woman Julie’s vocals, it’s filled with a glistening musicality juxtaposed with a frenzied, angst-driven climax alongside its all-too-relevant subject matter. Showcasing why we need voices like theirs now more than ever, with their unique euphonic activism and the deeply affecting plea “we’ve got to get over it…”, HAVVK offer a poignant soundscape with necessary meaning.

Of the track, Julie explains:

… we lived in London at the time of the vote and I don’t think any of us will forget the day the result came out. It felt like the campaign was designed to leverage a divide between people. At times, it felt like every spokesperson for or against Brexit was willing to put a short-term win ahead of opening a genuine conversation about people’s safety and futures. It drove a chasm between people which only seems to getting wider, with a rise in racism and hate-crime, and the constant out-pour of hateful language in online media.”

A montage of footage showing Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and protests erupting in violence, watch the affecting new video for ’52’ now:

’52’ is out now via Veta Records, followed by HAVVK’s debut album, Cause & Effect, due for release on 22nd November.

Track Of The Day: Projector – ‘Superstar’

“Don’t wanna be a woman with a smile like flat champagne” sings Projector vocalist & bassist Lucy Sheehan on the band’s latest single ‘Superstar’ – and we couldn’t agree more. Filled with crashing drums, powerful vocals and strung out guitar riffs, ‘Superstar’ is an immersive, raw exploration of the uncertainties that come with trying to make it big.

Based in Brighton, Lucy, Demelza (drums) and Ed (vocals and guitar) formed Projector in 2017, and began creating music together, creating sounds that were influenced by the 90s grunge era. Their blend of cathartic lyrics and abrasive, catchy sounds caught the attention of PRS and Festival Republic’s ‘Rebalance’ initiative this year, and since then the trio have been busy recording and gigging across the country.

Listen to the track below and follow Projector on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: DUCK – ‘Sirens’

Having wowed us at The Finsbury with their playful energy on more than one occasion, Leeds/Sheffield band DUCK are firm favourites here at Get In Her Ears, and now – following following joyous offerings such as 2017’s ‘Stereo’ and this year’s ‘R*ck St*r’, they’re back with a poignant new single.

Propelled by ’80s infused whirring hooks and intense pounding beats, ‘Sirens’ oozes jarring sounds to reflect its pertinent subject matter. A song about violence and victim blaming, as the impassioned vocals of front woman Sarah blast out an affecting lyrical commentary – “If you could just sew your mouth shut/ Everything would be alright/ You set him off again/ You and your big mouth” – an eerily stirring soundscape is created; one that will stick in your ears, and in your mind, at a time when these issues need addressing more than ever.

Listen to ‘Sirens’ via Bandcamp now:

‘Sirens’ is taken from DUCK’s upcoming new album There Are No Normal Conversations Any More, out later this year on Hell Hath No Fury Records. And you can catch DUCK live for the single launch on 12th October at Wharf Chambers, Leeds.

Track Of The Day: Lande Hekt – ‘The Future’

If you’re looking for a tonic to ease your anxiety about the current state our society, we recommend you listen to Lande Hekt‘s latest single ‘The Future’. Whilst it doesn’t ignore the bleak prospects that a Tory government and a climate crisis have thrust upon us, it does remind us to take a minute to remember you can do something to tackle it.

Best known as the vocalist and guitarist for Exeter indie punk band Muncie Girls, Lande is now focusing her energy on her solo work, and is set to release her debut EP Gigantic Disappointment on the 15th of November. It’s filled with catchy, defiant guitar anthems that showcase a (slightly) softer side to Lande’s music.

Speaking about her new song, Lande explains: “‘The Future’ is about getting older, trying to exist in a truly horrible world and trying to be a good person (and often not succeeding). It’s an homage to my friend who taught me that you can’t ignore environmental issues and showed me how scary it all is. We’re all running out of time.”

With the aid of Lande’s clear vocals and rolling guitar rhythms, hopefully listeners will be motivated in to thinking about the kind of future they want to be a part of, and actively work towards making it a good one. Listen to the new track below, and follow Lande on Facebook for more updates.
