Track Of The Day: Foxgluvv – ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’

A sparkling, sultry tune inspired by the 1985 film of the same name: fabulous “hungover-pop” artist Foxgluvv has shared her latest single ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’. It’s the first song to be released from her upcoming debut EP I Never Felt Hollywood, which is set to be released later this year.

As a DIY artist who champions queer music, it’s no surprise that Foxgluvv self-directed the accompanying video to ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’. Speaking about her new track, Foxgluvv explains: “[It] represents the love and admiration I so desperately wanted growing up, as most teenagers can relate to. Being queer, I never saw my ideal relationship portrayed on TV or in films. I was left with a sense of longing and intrigue towards my sexuality and I found myself questioning whether or not I would ever be in a happy, fulfilling relationship. I wanted to write a song that managed to grasp those feelings of uncertainty underneath, whilst masquerading as a typical love song on the first listen”.

Along with Producer Scott Colcombe, Foxgluvv crafts lo-fi, but sensational electronic pop tunes that are memorable for their catchy beats and their emotional content. ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ is another example of her natural ability to create intriguing and entertaining music that navigates the difficulty of queer relationships, and her longing for love whilst coming to terms with her true identity.

Track Of The Day: Berries – ‘Silent’

Although there are only three people in London-based Berries, the garage band manage to make a big noise. ‘Silent’, the first single from their forthcoming EP, fuses dazzling guitar solos with spiky, sassy vocals and a big pop chorus – and you’ll want to play it loud.

This song doesn’t stop moving – noisy rock drums keep the pace while the guitar soars, weaves and then even goes a bit prog-y in a fun, kinda life-affirming way. ‘Silent’ is pure rock ‘n’ roll. If it doesn’t make you want to bounce around with an air guitar and flip your hair about, we don’t know what will.

The trio are set to support Bleached at their sold out show at The Lexington on 22nd August, and we’re confident they’ll blow their crowd away with their furious live energy. Listen to ‘Silent’ below and follow Berries on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: Miss Eaves – ‘Swipe Left’

Having previously fallen in love with Miss Eaves‘ fun-filled, empowering offerings, like ‘Bush For The Push’ and ‘Thunder Thighs’, we’re super happy to see her return with a brand new video.

Relenting the frustration of online dating, whilst celebrating the joy of meeting people in person, ‘Swipe Left’ oozes all of Miss Eaves’ trademark humour and empowering vibes. Filled with uptempo, glitchy beats, vibrant sunny hooks (to match her colourful fries-themed outfit in the video!) and liberating whilst tongue-in-cheek vocals (“I rub one out, I please myself I don’t need anyone else…”), ‘Swipe Left’ is another ultimately uplifting anthem from Miss Eaves, showcasing her unique, disco-punk energy and refreshing honesty.

With the video seeing her venturing around NYC, meeting an eclectic mix of interesting people, Miss Eaves has shown the importance of getting in touch with each other face-to-face, encouraging them to engage with her work in a non-digital way.

We LOVE everything Miss Eaves does and all she stands for; her relentless creativity, impassioned motivation and positive spirit. And we can’t wait to hear what she has in store for us next!

Track Of The Day: The Paranoyds – ‘Carnage Bargain’

Having been introduced to their sleazy garage rock sounds with previous singles ‘Hungry Sam’/’Trade Our Sins’, LA newcomers The Paranoyds have now announced the release of their debut album, and shared title track ‘Carnage Bargain’.

Inspired by society’s need to consume, the track is driven by a deep whirring scuzz and layers of swirling instrumentation accompanying refreshing, insouciant vocals with shades of the likes of the languid sounds of Kim Gordon or Courtney Barnett. Oozing a sense of effortless cool, it’s a striking, grunge-fuelled anthem, complete with scathing lyrical observations and a glaring poignancy with all that’s happening in the world today. Of the track, bassist Staz Lindes explains:

“‘Carnage Bargain’ is about the people higher up wanting to get all this evil work done at a wholesale price… It’s impossible for us to get through a day without thinking of the thousands of migrant children in cages at the border alone, some without proper beds, soap, toothbrushes, and with lights on 24/7. We can not continue to ignore the black lives, young and old, taken by police almost every week. The plastic crisis. The mass shootings… The list goes on, and the hole gets deeper. Sometimes I can’t sleep and I wonder: do they sleep well in the White House? What else can I do as a privileged citizen? They want to get a Carnage Bargain. I want to pick up garbage.”

As relevant in the UK right now as it is for the US band, ‘Carnage Bargain’ offers a perfect juxtaposition of immersive energy with a foreboding undercurrent of meaning, proving The Paranoyds as the sonic antidote we need right now.

Carnage Bargain, the upcoming album from The Paranoyds, is out 13th September via Suicide Squeeze.
