Track Of The Day: Little Pale – ‘The Way You Used To Be’

A bittersweet reflection on life before technology took over; London-based newcomer Little Pale has shared her debut single ‘The Way You Used To Be’. It was her sultry remix of The Stone Roses’ classic track ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ first caught our attention, but her debut single is a wonderful example of her ability to write electro-pop tunes laced with melancholy.

Speaking about ‘The Way You Used To Be’, the songwriter explains: “It’s a reminiscing of the old, and comment on the new. Since the rise of tech, things have become so saturated, and while it definitely brings more opportunities, it does give me a longing for a simpler time”. Little Pale – so-called due to her stature and pallor – has overcome self doubt and feelings of anxiety to create her own sounds, and we’re excited to see what else she releases over the coming months.

Track Of The Day: LIINES – ‘On and On’

Following their 32-date tour around the UK with Sleaford Mods, GIHE faves and previous headliners for us at The Finsbury, LIINES return to the scene with their brand new single. A year after the release of their debut album Stop-Start, ‘On And On’ builds on their trademark rhythm-driven offerings with fantastically bright vocals and melodies.

Of the track, guitarist/vocalist Zoe McVeigh explains: “’On and On’ is about keeping everything down inside and driving yourself mad with the same looped thoughts.”

‘On and On’ plays on this idea with its repeating chorus structure and lyrics, completely holding its own. Prominent guitar riffs and thrashing percussion behind the breathtakingly bold vocals create LIINES’ stand-out post-punk vibe, setting them apart as wholly individual. Packing a mighty punch, it’s another truly impressive offering from the trio.

Track Of The Day: Trash Kit – ‘Horizon’

Having wowed us at one of our first nights at The Finbsury, Rachel Aggs (Sacred Paws, Shopping), Rachel Horwood (Bamboo) and Gill Partlington (Bas Jan), aka Trash Kit, have been firm favourites for some time. And now, following 2014’s Confidence, they’ve announced their upcoming new album, and shared a video for its uplifting title track, ‘Horizon’.

Inspired by how people interpret the planet and Aggs’ love of guitar music from Zimbabwe, ‘Horizon’ oozes a shimmering effervescent joy and swirling sparkling energy. Interweaving twinkling hooks, jangly beats and funk-fused bass lines, its cascading sun-filled vibes build to a wonderfully life-affirming climax and rejuvenating euphoric haze.

Of the track, Rachel Aggs explains:

“The song is quite literal, thinking about the edge of the earth – how people interpret the planet, how you can sometimes forget the enormity of the world and the universe and how small that can make you feel.”

Filmed by Upset The Rhythm at Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire, the joyous new video for ‘Horizon’ is the perfect accompaniment to the track’s radiant energy. Watch it here:

Track Of The Day: The Paranoyds – ‘Hungry Sam’/’Trade Our Sins’

As they prepare to head out on a US tour with the awesome Tacocat, LA-based The Paranoyds are set to release their debut EP.

With this two-track, the band serves up a couple of slices of sleazy garage rock with a psychedelic pop edge thanks to the swirling, whirling keyboards, which sound like they’re straight out of a 1950s monster movie.

‘Hungry Sam’ is pure punk; effortlessly cool with a stomping opener that wedges itself in your brain after just a couple of listens. Meanwhile, ‘Trade Our Sins’ is slower, darker and sadder, but still sounds incredibly kick-ass.

Keen to make a name for themselves with their live shows and records rather than through social media (they don’t have a Facebook page), The Paranoyds’ debut release really speaks for itself. And with such an exciting support slot lined up, they’ll undoubtedly get more and more people listening.

 

Hungry Sam/Trade Our Sins is out now digitally, and will be released on 7-inch vinyl on July 12th via Suicide Squeeze. This will be a one-time pressing of 750, 650 on Orange Crush colour vinyl, and 100 on Neon Yellow colour vinyl – pre-order here.
