Track Of The Day: Indian Queens – ‘You Came Over Late’

A disorientating lullaby for uneasy minds in the city; Indian Queens‘ new track ‘You Came Over Late’ is a charming blur of lusting vocals and atmospheric guitar riffs. Released via Cool Thing Records, the Hackney trio have managed to create another genre-bending fusion of psych, chillwave and indie sound designed to hypnotise their listeners.

Inspired partially by the film Suffragette – “I’d rather be a rebel than a slave” – lead singer and guitarist Jennifer O’neill crafted more than just the melodies on ‘You Came Over Late. Along with her band mates Katherine O’Neill (bass) and Matt Bick-Dudan (drums), she engineered and produced the song, as well as designing the artwork for the single too.

After their knockout set at Robert Smith’s Meltdown Festival in June 2018, Indian Queens have gone on to release an EP and play a headline set in London. We’re big fans of their new single, and we’re certain that 2019 is going to be equally as a big a year for this talented trio. Track Of The Day: Torture and the Desert Spiders – ‘Cult Song’

It’s hard to believe that Torture and the Desert Spiders have only been together for a couple of months. The New Cross-based band’s sassy, self-assured debut, ‘Cult Song’, feels so accomplished.

I’m a sucker for an interesting voice and Anna Kunz, also known as Torture, will stop you in your tracks with her rich, rough vocals. Reminiscent of Cat Power or early PJ Harvey, they have a raw power and intensity that’ll have you pumping your fist in the air or crying your eyes out. Probably both.

Meanwhile, guitarist Levent Ceylan and drummer Darcy Georgina bring a dirty, bluesy, 1960s garage scuzziness to what is essentially a ballad. And it makes you wonder how loud this band get when angry. I’m looking forward to finding out.

Track Of The Day: Ioanna Gika – ‘Out Of Focus’

Inspired by her Greek heritage and an emotional realisation after unexpected familial grief; Ioanna Gika has shared her new single ‘Out Of Focus’. Taken from her debut album Thalassa, which is set for release on 5th April via Sargent House, the song is a gentle and ornate example of Ioanna’s songwriting talent.

The single is accompanied by a self-directed music video, featuring world surf champion Jake Caster masked as the Greek God Pan. Ioanna’s album Thalassa takes its name from the primeval spirit of the sea, and her unusual treatment of mythical figures makes for a surreal set of visuals. Whilst her music has a strong sense of melancholy to it, her vocals and lyricism are as cutting and powerful as the waves Caster is chasing in the video.

Speaking about her upcoming album, Ioanna explains: “A series of deaths drew me home to Greece. The city of childhood memories was in disrepair. I drove past painted swastikas towards burial sites. I said goodbyes and grieved for those I didn’t get to say goodbye to. Thalassa is about going through change that is unwanted yet unstoppable. It is a document of the dread, the adrenaline, and the surrender in the moments when you realise the only way to survive the wave, is to brace yourself and go through.”

Track Of The Day: Mammoth Penguins – ‘I Wanna’

Following previous releases Hide and Seek and John Doe, and having supported the likes of Adult Mom and Swearin’, Cambridge trio Mammoth Penguins have now signed to Fika Recordings and announced the release of their third album There’s No Fight We Can’t Both Win. 

Taken from the album, new single ‘I Wanna’ is filled with all the jangly, joyous goodness we’ve come to expect, with the raw, distinctive vocals of Emma Kupa oozing a sunny charm and twinkling romanticism. With its hugely relatable lyrics for anyone that’s ever been a bit in love, alongside shimmering, dreamy melodies, it’s an instantly catchy slice of lush indie-pop that leaves me with butterflies in my stomach, longing to hear more of Mammoth Penguins’ fuzzy, scuzzy loveliness. Of the track, Kupa explains:

“‘I Wanna’ is a super simple song about how liking someone can unlock a load of creativity and energy… and suddenly there are so many possibilities and so much potential, and life becomes way more fun.”
