Track Of The Day: Jenny Hval – ‘Spells’

Following 2016’s critically acclaimed Blood Bitch, Norwegian multi-disciplinary artist and GIHE fave, Jenny Hval, returns with news of an eagerly awaited new EP, The Long Sleep. Exploring the art of composition, all of the songs on the EP recycle the same compositional motives, but manipulate them into very different shapes that take them further and further out of their original, “life-like” context.

Taken from the EP is new single ‘Spells’. With rich, orchestral layers of sound providing the backdrop to Hval’s sweeping, honey-sweet vocals, it builds to a majestic cinematic anthem, oozing a soaring grandeur that’ll captivate on first listen. Somewhat more melodic and catchy than her previous, more abstract, offerings, ‘Spells’ will indeed cast its spell over you with its obscure, ethereal beauty.

With this latest single, Hval has once again shown herself to be an utterly unique and innovative artist, capable of creating truly spellbinding, epic soundscapes.

Hval recorded The Long Sleep with longtime collaborator Håvard Volden and producer Lasse Marhaug, along with a range of musicians including Kyrre Laastad on percussion, Anja Lauvdal on piano, Espen Reinertsen on saxophone, and Eivind Lønning on trumpet.

The Long Sleep, the upcoming EP from Jenny Hval, is out 25th May via Sacred Bones. And catch Jenny Hval live at St John on Bethnal Green on 5th June.

Track Of The Day: Tess Roby – ‘Catalyst’

Taken from her debut album Beacon, Montreal artist Tess Roby has recently shared her dreamy new single ‘Catalyst’.

Flowing with Roby’s sweeping rich vocals and whirring hooks, ‘Catalyst’ oozes a cinematic grace and subtle emotive power. As twinkling, ethereal soundscapes evoke rich pastoral imagery, it’s a truly majestic and stirring slice of classically inspired alt-pop.

Written shortly after the death of her father, and inspired by her childhood memories of Lancashire, Beacon is out 4th May via Italians Do It Better.

Track Of The Day: Dream Nails – ‘Cookies For You’

Following their latest fantastic and poignant double A-side ‘Vagina Police’/’Fascism Is Coming’, our favourite Feminist Punk Witches Dream Nails are back with a sarcastic and fun-filled new video.

A song dedicated to the entitled men who do the bare minimum to support feminism and expect prizes, ‘Cookies For You’ serves as a stark reminder that there’s still so far to come in the fight for equality. With lyrics like “Cookies for you, you like my status; cookies for you, you’re not a rapist…”, we’re faced with the reality that many men claiming to support feminism are not doing anywhere near enough to support the cause.

However, filled with sugar-sweet melodies, delicious harmonies and a whopping dollop of sarcasm, it’s impossible not to get caught up in the vibrant joy of Dream Nails’ latest meaningful offering. And, complete with its own wonderfully tasty video, made with brilliant artist and film-maker Becca Human, it’s a total (iced) gem of a watch.

Yet another sparkling combination of activism and infectious tunes from the formidable force that is Dream Nails, watch the brand new video for ‘Cookies For You’ here:

And catch Dream Nails live for us at The Finsbury THIS Friday, 13th April, along with The Franklys, Madame So and Gold Baby. We cannot wait!

Track Of The Day: Basic Bitches – ‘How Come None Of You Ever Want To Hang Anymore?’

Formed back in 2014 in New York City by Naomi Scott (Naomi Hates Humans) working with different drummers before finding an ideal collaborator in Nick D’Amore (Overlake), Basic Bitches self-released their debut album last year, and have now shared their brand new single, ahead of an upcoming UK tour.

Accompanied by a spooky video, ‘How Come None Of You Ever Want To Hang Anymore?’ races with raucous riffs and thrashing beats as Scott’s raw, gritty vocals rage. With shades of the likes of The Distillers, it’s an immense blast of sound that hits your ears with a seething urgency. And, at just 54 seconds long, it’s a perfect, ferocious slice of energy-fuelled punk that leaves you desperate for more.
