Track Of The Day: Let’s Eat Grandma – ‘Hot Pink’

Following the success of their wonderful debut album I, Gemini, childhood friends Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth – aka Let’s Eat Grandma – have now returned to grace our ears with a sparkling new single.

Produced by SOPHIE, ‘Hot Pink’ is somewhat harder-hitting than previous offerings. Addressing gender politics, it’s filled with glitchy ethereal vibes as a sweeping electronic soundscape soars alongside the subtle power of the duo’s distinctive playful vocals. Complete with immense pulsating beats and dance-pop hooks, in addition to their trademark twinkling musicality, Let’s Eat Grandma’s latest offering showcases how they’re honing their sound to continue creating something truly innovative.

Of the track, the duo explain:

“‘Hot Pink’ is about the misconceptions of femininity and masculinity and the power of embracing both of them. It’s about self-expression and appreciation for an underrated colour.

‘Hot Pink’ is out now. And you can catch Let’s Eat Grandma live at Vauxhall’s Lightbox on 8th March.

Track Of The Day: BRYDE – ‘To Be Brave’

It’s been a busy year for London-based, Welsh-born musician Bryde. After setting up her own label Seahorse Music to publish records by like-minded women and help make them more visible in a male-dominated industry, Bryde finished up her debut LP Like An Island, while flitting between London and LA. Exploring themes of independence, liberation, and relationships, her candid indie rock sound were fully fleshed out with mixing help from Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice, PJ Harvey, St Vincent) and mastering by Mandy Parnell.

Lyrically, Bryde concentrates on life and human interaction, her songwriting persona wears her heart on her sleeve and new single ‘To Be Brave’ showcases this open attitude. Speaking about the track, the songwriter explains: “’To Be Brave’ was written as kind of a soft squeeze of the hand to many friends who have, like me, been through many a dark period and put on a brave face and just got on with it. It’s a comment about how we all live out certain episodes of our lives in such a public setting these days that I feel we almost edit them to appear flawless, nothing but smiles.”

We’re big supporters of Bryde’s bravery and can’t wait to hear her EP Like An Island when it comes out on 13th April. Listen to ‘To Be Brave’ below, and pre-order your copy of her EP here.

Track Of The Day: Berries – ‘Faults’

Having blown us away many a time with the raw passion of their energy-fuelled live shows (including playing for us at The Finsbury and a special acoustic set for us on Hoxton Radio), London trio Berries are fast becoming the next big thing. With acclaim from the likes of John Kennedy and Tom Robinson, and sold out shows at Camden Rocks and Tramlines already under their belts, they’re now back with a glorious new single.

Propelled by the band’s whirring energy, ‘Faults’ oozes smooth riffs and the distinctive, smouldering vocals of Holly Carter. Complete with wonderfully tongue-in-cheek lyrics (“I’m useless at home, but I’m your house wife…”) and rolling beats, it’s another fantastically frenzied, raw slice of perfect alt-rock from the trio.

Of the track, Carter explains:

“We feel this track showcases a different side to us, we have taken our sound in a different direction… ‘Faults’ still has all the energy and breakdowns that we love but with an added eerie, bluesy element in the verses.”

‘Faults’, the new track from Berries, is out Friday 9th February. And you can catch them live next month:

2nd March – Liverpool, Sound
3rd March – Manchester, Aatma
16th March – London, Camden Assembly
23rd March – Brighton, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar

Track Of The Day: Soccer Mommy – ‘Cool’

A dreamy guitar tune that questions what it means to be popular, Nashville’s Soccer Mommy (aka Sophie Allison) has shared her latest single ‘Cool’. The track is taken from her upcoming album Clean, which is set for release via Fat Possum Records on 2nd March.

“’Cool’ focuses on this other person who’s desirable and it shows how sometimes you can romanticize the idea of being different than you are,” Allison explains. “It comes from a place of insecurity and idealization, which is a feeling that hangs over a lot of the album.” Soccer Mommy has a knack for writing about anxiety and “soft anger,” exploring frustration and insecurity through her laid-back vocals and melodic guitar.

Following a series of DIY Bandcamp releases and last year’s Collection, Clean is Allison’s journey out of her bedroom and into the studio with a full band. The new album has been produced by Gabe Wax (War On Drugs, Deerhunter, Beirut) and mixed by Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, PJ Harvey), so we’re sure it’s going to be an intricate, sharply executed piece of work. Soccer Mommy will be playing a UK tour in March, taking her to venues in Leeds, Manchester, London and finishing up in Brighton. Get your tickets here.
