Track Of The Day: Bamboo Smoke – ‘Sleepless’

A smooth, effortlessly produced electronic lullaby, Bamboo Smoke have shared their latest single ‘Sleepless’. Formed of lyricist & vocalist Lou and instrumentalist & producer Tom, the duo create hazy soundscapes with smoky undertones and soulful vocals.

A chance meeting on a rooftop brought Bamboo Smoke together at a time when Lou had armfuls of notebooks filled with words and melodies and Tom had a library of instrumentals desperate for the right voice. The duo have since spent months writing together in South London, riding trains, scrawling lyrics and bouncing phone recordings back and forth.

The band’s debut EP is a collection of songs written over the course of the last year, during sessions snatched from the temporal demands of life in London in your 20s jobs, blending the playful with the shadows, capturing fragments of dreams.

Track Of The Day: New Haunts – ‘Reactions’

Inspired by post-punk, early industrial music, synthpop, coldwave and everything in between, New Haunts is a musical force to be reckoned with. Her latest track ‘Reactions’ is a balance of these influences, ringing out with a cold but magnetic energy.

“‘Reactions’ is pretty much about the beauty versus the horror of having emotional connections,” New Haunts explains. “I wanted to encompass both the good and the bad by layering softer, dreamier sounds with bleaker, harsher ones. I play around with opposites a lot in my music – it’s not often I find a subject matter which I feel 100% positive or negative about and that’s a big part of what I love to dissect and examine when I write a song.”

This juxtaposition of themes and sounds work harmoniously on ‘Reactions’. The single is available as a free download from New Haunts bandcamp now. Keep your eyes peeled for her debut album in the near future.

Track Of The Day: AyOwA – ‘Insomnia’

What dreams may come when listening to this majestic new track from Danish electronic duo, AyOwA (Hannah Schneider and Nicolai Kornerup)!

The first single from their forthcoming EP Farvel, ‘Insomnia’ is sung in Danish, to the haunting lyrics of Danish writer Mette Moestrup. For those not fluent in Danish, the vocal effects of the language make us feel our way into the song. It begins like icy air creeping into a dark house, then sweeps and soars into droplets of crystallised sound towards the majestic chorus. To hear it is to feel the heartbeats and clicks in a waking dream.

AyOwA use Modular synths and old reel-to-reels effectively, lending the sound the quality of something unique, yet familiar. They have blended a haunting mix of timeless ambience with crystal-sharp vocals and crisp, clear sounds in a Bjork-like Scandanavian reverie. There are also echoes of other European nineties sounds, like Robert Miles, and Stereolab.

The overall effect of this track is slow, melancholic, and cinematic. It is the sound of ice breaking above the darkened city on the tallest church spire… To sleep, perchance to dream.

Farvel, the upcoming EP from AyOwA, is set for release in May 2018 via Music For Dreams.

Track Of The Day: Anteros – ‘Love’

Our eyes and ears are blossoming in to heart shapes at the “effervescent pop” sounds on Anteros‘ latest single ‘Love’. Produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Marika Hackman, Bloc Party), The London-based band channel Blondie and The Cardigans on their new ode to the all-encompassing universal emotion.

‘Love’ follows on from Anteros’ previous single ‘Bonnie’, which will be released on vinyl as a AA-side in Flying Vinyl’s December boxset. Speaking about the track, frontwoman Laura Hayden says: “Everyone is so scared, the world is so fragmented. Love is self explanatory, really, in the general sense of the word. It’s about putting LOVE first: before race, before fear, before hate, before greed.”

This year, Anteros have played sold out shows alongside Two Door Cinema Club, Sundara Karma and Blaenavon, made a splash on the pages of NME, Sunday Times Culture and Vogue and begun work on their debut album, due for release next year.
