Track Of The Day: Pip Blom – ‘School’

Following last year’s EP Are We There Yet?, Amsterdam-based Pip Blom has now shared the second single from her recent AA-side 7”.

Released alongside single ‘Babies Are A Lie’, ‘School’ is filled with all the scuzzy, whirring hooks and seductively lethargic vocals we have come to know and love from the young Dutch artist. A ‘90s-infused slice of infectious garage rock, Blom’s latest offering showcases her slick, lo-fi melodies and raw songwriting skills perfectly, marking her out as a definite one to watch in 2018.

‘School’ / ‘Babies Are A Lie’, the new AA-side 7” from Pip Blom, is out now on Nice Swan Records. Get your hands on it here. Catch Pip live in the UK:

29th Nov – Peer Hat, Manchester
30th Nov – The Shacklewell Arms, London
1st Dec – Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, Brighton

Track Of The Day: Anteros – ‘Bonnie’

A staple of their live set from their very first shows, ‘Bonnie’ has proven to be an instant crowd-pleaser among Anteros’ loyal following. The track is a call to arms for women and girls, asking them to stop competing against each other and unite in the face of adversity and intense media scrutiny.

“We wrote ‘Bonnie’ about the pressures of being a girl in a world of people who never seem to be happy with what they have,” explains Anteros’ frontwoman Laura Hayden. “It’s time to break away from that, to love and accept ourselves. To stop comparing ourselves to each other and work together. ‘Bonnie’ is our tribute to girls.” Produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J, Marika Hackman, Bloc Party), the band’s new track is a polished, defiant effort to unite the girls that Laura speaks about.

Track Of The Day: Sunflower Bean – ‘I Was A Fool’

I first fell in love with Sunflower Bean on seeing them play at Green Man Festival this year; the New York trio simply blew me away with their vibrant energy, infectious offerings and seductive sense of cool. Now, having just signed to Lucky Number (UK/EU) and Mom & Pop (ROW), they have shared their first single since the release of last year’s critically acclaimed debut.

‘I Was A Fool’ oozes dreamy vibes alongside jangly hooks and a honey sweet, twinkling charm. Reminiscent of favourites like Camera Obscura and Best Coast, it’s filled with the luscious interplay of Julia Cumming and Nick Kivlen’s vocals, resulting in a swooning slice of sunny surf-pop that your ears will fall in love with at first listen. Of the track, Kivlen explains:

(it’s) one of those songs that seemingly crept up from nowhere and into our practice space. It was a special moment between the three of us, Julia and I both improvised the lyrics… It feels like far longer, but it’s been nearly 2 years since we’ve put new music into the world. I think this song is a good example of how we’ve grown as a band, while still staying true to the band that first played together back in high school.”

Track Of The Day: Indian Queens – ‘I Get No Rest’

If you’re looking for the soundtrack to a “late dark night in London”, then Hackney trio Indian Queens‘ latest single ‘I Get No Rest’ is the perfect choice. Written during the midst of a massive political shift (Brexit, the general election) and in the wake of the tragic Grenfell Tower fire, it’s the band’s response to the inescapable feeling that – as vocalist & guitarist Jennifer O’Neill put its – “rich ‘important’ people were taking the piss out most of our lives.”

You’ll be hooked on Jennifer’s clear, strong vocals which dominate the track and chanting the standout lyric “Free, as long as you obey” in unison with her. The song’s steady percussion and moody bass lines create a seductively jaded atmosphere, proving Indian Queens have the potential to produce original, ominous and meaningful sounds.

The band will be playing a headline show at St Pancras Old Church on November 29th (event details here) so make sure you grab a ticket and head down to see them live.

Listen to ‘I Get No Rest’ below, and follow Indian Queens on Facebook for more updates.
