The Get In Her Ears team have put together another mix of indie anthems, alternative & shoegaze sounds, punk bangers, alt-pop tunes and eclectic electronic soundscapes for your listening pleasure. Lambrini Girls – ‘Company Culture’
A track about being under appreciated, sexually harrassed and never able to win in the workplace as a woman or queer person, ‘Company Culture’ is another seething offering from punks on the rise Lambrini Girls. Following raging singles ‘God’s Country’ and ‘Body Of Mine’, it’s propelled by a fierce racing energy and ferocious sense of urgency, once again cementing Lambrini Girls as a truly formidable force to be reckoned with. Lambrini Girls will be heading off on their biggest headline tour yet next Spring. Tickets and info here.

Glixen – ‘Sick Silent’
I’m fully crushing on this crushing piece of heavy shoegaze from Arizona-based band Glixen. Vocalist Aislinn Ritchie’s melancholy voice floats over spiralling, intensely distorted riffs, shrouding listeners in a chasm of intoxicating noise. I’m looking forward to hearing the EP Glixen are currently working on with producer Sonny DiPerri (My Bloody Valentine, DIIV)

Slung – ‘Neurotic’
Having completely blown us away playing for us at the Sebright Arms earlier this year, grunge-tinged supergroup Slung (featuring members of Sit Down, The Death Of Us and InTechnicolour) have now released their debut single. Building with an ominous tension, ‘Neurotic’ ripples with a haunting energy, finally culminating in an fierce climax of raging catharsis. Of the track, front woman Katie explains: “The song is a series of small moments from my life that have been representative of this more encompassing overall fear of disempowerment and relinquishing control… A recurring dream of being born with superpowers, but then one day, when everyone’s counting on you, your power just disappears and and you have no idea how to bring it back.” (ML)

Bonnie Trash – ‘Kisses Goodbye’
Bonnie Trash – led by Canadian-Italian twin sisters Emmalia and Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor – have amplified their darkened post-punk anthems by inviting their longtime friends Emma Howarth-Withers (bass) and Dana Bellamy (drums) to join their line up. As a four piece, the band are able to double down on the intensity of their sound, which explores shadowy emotions like grief, heartache and loss. It’s these experiences that have shaped Bonnie Trash’s recent EP, My Love Remains the Same, which is out now via one of my favourite labels Hand Drawn Dracula. (KC)

dethcaps – ‘Wave Goodbye’
This track from San Francisco grunge band dethcaps is an intense reflection on depression and suicidal thoughts. By blending their raw, observational lyricism with hazy melodies and swirling riffs, the band hope to inspire connection and empathy when it comes to the complexities of these issues. “It’s not just a song,” the band explain, “it’s a conversation starter and a powerful statement on the realities of mental health.” (KC)

ARXX – ‘Swim’
Written after Hanni came out as non-binary last year, ‘Swim’ is the latest single from total faves ARXX. A song dedicated to empowering trans people with their gender journeys, it offers a swirling euphoric ode to trans joy and being able to be your true self; reminding those currently coming to terms with their gender identity that it does get better. Hanni explains: “The world currently doesn’t feel like a very safe place to be trans, and for that reason a lot of the dialogue around trans issues is really scary and saddening. Those stories are so necessary, but with ‘Swim’ I wanted to take a minute to express the joy that comes with learning yourself and feeling love from your community around you.” I’ve had this song on repeat all week, crying and smiling and just being so grateful that ARXX exist. I can’t wait for their new album, Good Boy, which is out a week today (pre-order here) and I’m super excited to see them live again at Lafayette on 6th November! (ML)

SASAMI – ‘Slugger’
I’m eternally impressed by the way SASAMI can switch between folk, metal and pop music and make it look and sound totally seamless. I had her genre-blending album, SQUEEZE, on repeat when she released it back in 2022, but her recent singles ‘Honeycrash’ and ‘Slugger’ are now becoming new favourites of mine. I’m thrilled that she’s reclaiming pop music in her own way and using it to explore her gender, sexuality and romantic relationships, developing her own sense of self within this process. ‘Slugger’ will feature on her excellently titled new album, Blood On The Silver Screen, which is set for release on 7th March 2025 via Domino. SASAMI will also be in the UK in October playing two headline shows – The Lower Third in London on the 29th and Yes in Manchester on the 30th. (KC)

CATBEAR – ‘Grow Up’
The second single of the year from London-Brighton queer duo Catbear, ‘Grow Up’ offers an ‘80s-tinged synth-pop anthem reflecting on the struggles of being an underachieving millennial. Propelled by sizzling beats and a searing gritty energy, it’s another example of the instantly infectious genre-defying creations that Catbear are able to captivate our ears with. Of the track, they explain: “Plenty of songs are written about being a teenager, even about the progression into early adulthood, but hey, we’re in our 30s now. This is life in England in 2024 for us – maybe some people can relate.” (ML)

Roller Derby – ‘Ready To Forget’
Embodying a sparkling bittersweet mix of joy and melancholy, ‘Ready To Forget’ offers an intimate reflection on coming to terms with the end of a relationship; beautifully interweaving raw textures with the stirring empowering energy of its harmonious choruses. Bringing a fresh energy to the German duo’s ever-evolving sound, I love its swirling, gritty allure. Roller Derby release their debut album on 28th February next year and will be celebrating with a little trip to the UK next May, including dates playing for us in London and Brighton. info & tickets here! Georgia Gets By – ‘Split Lip’
‘Split Lip’ is the woozy, intoxicating title track from Georgia Gets By’s recent EP. The solo project of New Zealand artist Georgia Nott, who has spent the last decade fronting electronic pop project BROODS, under her new moniker Notts explores the diverse nature of true intimacy and the sting of rejection, all inspired by the end of her first queer relationship. Soft As Snow – ‘Palms’
Berlin-based Soft As Snow are back with a hypnotic blend of experimental trip-hop sounds on their latest single ‘Palms’. Taken from their third album, Metal.wet, which is set for release on 8th November via Beacon Sound, it’s the first taste of what’s to come from this dynamic duo who create ethereal-yet-edgy soundscapes. Freak Slug – ‘Spells’
The latest single from Manchester artist Xenya Genovese aka Freak Slug, ‘Spells’ fizzes with a glitchy, quirky energy and sultry allure, offering an instant earworm that’ll have you hooked on first listen. ‘Spells’ is taken from Freak Slug’s upcoming debut album, I Blow Out Big Candles, which is set for release on 8th November via Future Classic. Pom Pom Squad – ‘Street Fighter’
Ahead of the release of their new album next month, Pom Pom Squad have now shared a fierce synth-driven new single. Oozing a sizzling energy, it offers a racing slice of pop-punk complete with an infectious tongue-in-cheek sense of fun. (ML)

Urge Surfer – ‘Glass Ceiling’
New York electro-pop duo Urge Surfer released their latest EP, Alphabet Archive, at the end of August, and this track ‘Glass Ceiling’ features on the record. Together, Jordan Smith and Chelsea O’Donnell explore gender dysphoria, their evolving identities and embracing change on their new offering, all underscored by their atmospheric synth textures. (KC)

Dogviolet – ‘Violets’
Although it may seem like Dogviolet have been around for a while now (they actually played their first ever gig for us back in 2022!) they are only now releasing their debut single. And it’s been worth the wait. Oozing a soaring celestial splendour and seething raw emotion, it offers a stirring tale of queer awakening and young love. Dogviolet will celebrating the single’s release with a night of Sapphic joy next Wednesday 2nd October. Limited tickets left on Dice! (ML)

Miya Folick – ‘La Da Da’
The latest single from LA artist Miya Folick, ‘La Da Da’ follows her 2023 album, Roach. Rippling with a raw emotion and twinkling sense of vulnerability, it delves into themes of identity and desire, as it builds with a lilting energy to a beautifully shimmering ballad. Folick reflects: “I was slowing down, saying no, responding when I actually had an answer, and asking for the things I specifically desired rather than the things I thought I was supposed to want.” (ML)

Soccer Mommy – ‘Driver’
Described as a “testament to her spaciness and indecision” this latest single from Nashville indie artist Soccer Mommy is all about embracing your flaws. ‘Driver’ is taken from her upcoming album, Evergreen, which is set for release on 25th October via Loma Vista. Soccer Mommy has mined her innately raw songwriting techniques on her new record to help her move through the lingering effects of personal loss. I’m looking forward to hearing the LP in full. (KC)

Our Girl – ‘What You Told Me’
Having fallen completely in love with their 2018 debut, Stranger Today, I am very happy to hear the news that London trio Our Girl are back and releasing their second album in November. Ahead of the album’s release, and following previous offerings ‘Relief’, ‘Something About Me Being A Woman’ and album title track ‘The Good Kind’, latest single ‘What You Told Me’ reflects on the heartbreak of seeing illness affect someone you love, and the joy that can come in the moments of respite. Propelled by a whirring energy and brit-pop inspired scuzzy hooks, it fizzes with a stirring raw emotion as Soph Nathan’s distinctive vocals ripple with an understated powerful grace, creating a deeply resonant shimmering splendour. The Good Kind, the upcoming album from Our Girl, is set for release on 8th November via Bella Union. Sassyhiya – ‘Boat Called Predator’
Having charmed us playing live for us at both the Shacklewell Arms and Matchstick Piehouse last year, London-based faves Sassyhiya have now announced that their debut album will be released in November. Propelled by a jangly energy and the band’s trademark twinkling lighthearted uplifting charisma, latest single ‘Boat Called Predator’ is named after a boat that Kathy and Helen saw being towed while they were travelling through Scotland. Take You Somewhere, Sassyhiya’s debut album, is due for release on 8th November via Skep Wax Records. (ML)

Fightmilk – ‘That Thing You Did’
The latest single from their upcoming new album No Souvenirs, ‘That Thing You Did’ showcases all there is to love about total faves Fightmilk. Exploring post break-up feelings of trying (and refusing) to forgive and forget, it’s propelled by the band’s trademark scuzzy energy, creating an instantly catchy slice of perfect punk-pop that’s angsty and uplifting in equal measure. No Souvenirs, the upcoming third album from Fightmilk, is out on 15th November via Alcopop! Records. Catch them live on tour to celebrate. I can’t wait to see them that night at Paper Dress Vintage. NEXT TO NADA – ‘MOTHS’
If you’ve ever wondered what it would look like if a punk band shot their debut music video on a narrowboat, wonder no more! London based “sludge rock” four piece NEXT TO NADA filmed the accompanying visuals for their latest single ‘MOTHS’ inside of one, reflecting the chaotic but ultimately enjoyable nature of modern life. The track is taken from the bands’ recent EP, WHINE // MOTHS, a collection of grinding-yet-gleeful anthems designed to release the pent up frustrations of everyday life. (KC)

Split Chain ft. Softcult – ‘(Re)-Extract’
I am obsessed with this heavy collaboration between two of my current favourite bands: Bristol noise merchants Split Chain and Canadian shoegaze duo Softcult. With it’s blistering riffs, crashing percussion, gauzy vocals and screams; it’s pure Gloomy Girl territory and I LOVE it. (KC)

A.A. Williams – ‘SPLINTER’
Currently on her debut tour of the United States, London based heavy songwriter A.A. Williams has shared this potent new lament. ‘Splinter’ masterfully blends Williams’ tentative piano keys with thundering riffs and crashing percussion to create a cathartic four and a half minutes of doom-tinged, atmospheric sound. She will be returning to the UK to appear on the main stage at Damnation, Europe’s largest indoor metal festival, at Manchester’s BEC Arena on 2nd November. (KC)

Divide and Dissolve – ‘Monolithic’
Newly signed to Bella Union, ‘Monolithic’ is the latest single from Divide and Dissolve, the heavy instrumental project of Takiaya Reed. Her haunting saxophone notes collide with a cacophony of cymbal smashes and gargantuan riffs to create a sonic prayer for “systems of liberation, freedom, Indigenous sovereignty and for a Black future.” Reed is set to release a new album in 2025, the heavily anticipated follow-up to Divide and Dissolve’s fourth LP, Systemic, out now via Invada. Zamilska ft. husky – ‘Odyssey’
I was excited to see this track by Polish electronic artist Zamilska drop into my inbox earlier this month. Taken from her upcoming album, United Kingdom Of Anxiety, which is set for release on 4th October via Untuned Records (Zamilska’s own label), this track is an intoxicating post-apocalyptic soundscape that totally enraptures the senses. Zamilska will be supporting the inimitable Kim Gordon on her upcoming European tour. Full dates can be found here. (KC)

Bambie Thug – ‘Hex So Heavy’
Described as “a witches siren” and “a warning” to those who have crossed them, I’m hooked on this seething slice of genre-defying noise from Ireland’s Bambie Thug. The artist’s potent desire to reek havoc on those who have underestimated them is personified in the track’s accompanying visuals, which see Bambie take on the form of a foreboding arachnid creature. The artist is currently on the European leg of their ‘Crown The Witch’ tour, supported by devious duo The Darklings for the majority of their dates, with the addition of my older brother’s band – Northampton industrial/electronic project Drownd – for their show in Amsterdam on 8th October! Toya Delazy – ‘Eazy’
I was gutted to have missed Toya Delazy’s collaborative performance with GROVE and Taliable when I was at Supersonic Festival in Birmingham last month, but I’m glad this single from the South African Zulu artist dropped into my inbox shortly afterwards. “This song is a story about someone who climbed into their own grave looking for hope,” Delazy explains. “It’s about taking a hard situation and making it work in your favour. Leaving South Africa as a Zulu girl to go to Britain to sing Zulu songs was seen as suicide, given the history we have with the British, but I really believed in the power of collaboration and diversity, even though the world today weaponises our diversity against each other.” I love Delazy’s distinctive vocals, which flow over frenzied beats and glitchy electronics here. 45AcidBabies – ‘Love Me 10der’
The return of Dutch garage pop-punks 45AcidBabies, ‘Love Me 10der’ sizzles with whirring riffs as the band offer a colourful retaliation to tax authorities and the powers curtailing our rights; an empowering ode to ‘painting the world pink’ and building community. (ML)

SOPHIE ft. Hannah Diamond – ‘Always and Forever’
Late, great producer and trans pioneer SOPHIE’s eponymous new album has been released, and what a joy it is to have it in existence. The posthumous LP showcases just how essential and innovative SOPHIE’s creations were, put together by her brother and longtime producer Benny Long. Featuring Hannah Diamond, single ‘Always and Forever’ was recorded in London during the 2020 lockdowns and turned out to be the last time that she would see her friend SOPHIE. A glistening and heartfelt offering, listening to it you can’t help but feel that SOPHIE is still with us, continuing to influence the pop landscape with her unique spirit and sound. SOPHIE, the posthumous release, is out now via Transgressive and Future Classic. (ML)

Elsa Hewitt – ‘Poiselle’
I’m such a big fan of Elsa Hewitt’s ambient electronic creations. This track is taken from her upcoming album, Dominant Heartstrings, which she will be releasing in the near future. I’m still spinning her previous LP, Chaos Emeralds – but I’m excited to hear more of her wonderful synth and vocal loops on this new record. (KC)

heka x Saint Jude – ‘Swallow’
‘Swallow’ is one serene part of a beautiful collaboration between South London left-field musicians heka and Saint Jude. Released via Slow Dance Records, the cinematic track melts heka’s atmospheric gothic-folk influences into Saint Jude’s gentle, celestial ruminations. You can listen to their equally as captivating companion piece ‘In Your Garden’ here. (KC)

Half Waif – ‘The Museum’
The new single from Nandi Rose aka Half Waif, ‘The Museum’ is taken from her upcoming new album, See You At The Maypole, a stunningly heartfelt collection, written after Rose experienced a devastating miscarriage. Flowing with an effervescent grace, this single offers a stirring reflection on climate catastrophe and the irony of the idea of museums “preserving pieces of furniture in a pristine, white-walled space when outside, everything is collapsing.” See You At The Maypole is set for release on 4th October via ANTI-. Dawn Richard & Spencer Zahn – ‘Diets’
Lifted from their upcoming second collaborative album, Quiet In A World Full Of Noise, ‘Diets’ is a dreamy offering from New Orleans R&B singer Dawn Richard and New York composer Spencer Zahn. Throughout the track, Richard draws parallels between cutting out harmful relationships and losing weight, all underscored by Zahn’s tentative and considered keys. Their new record looks set to be a deeply emotive collection of songs, set for release on 4th October via Merge Records. (KC)

Dear Pariah – ‘KOKO’
This is an exquisitely emotional, tender offering from independent artist & former GIHE radio guest Charlie Hinchcliff aka Dear Pariah. ‘Koko’ will feature on her upcoming EP, The Weeper Takes, which is set for release in October by the excellent Trapped Animal Records. The tracks are inspired by Hinchcliff’s ongoing struggle with her chronic illness multisystem Sarcoidosis, her sobriety and the literal weeping that sometimes occurred when she was recording and writing her music. Sephine Llo – ‘Rest With Me’
An ethereal lament for her late husband Robert, this single from multi-instrumentalist Sephine Llo is a remarkably poignant, shape-shifting piece of work. Taken from her upcoming album, Diamond Fall, which is set for release on 25th October – the date of the couples 10th wedding anniversary – the track features samples from a song Robert wrote as a teenager, seamlessly woven into Sephine Llo’s gentle instrumentation and guided by her yearning vocals. Gazelle Twin – ‘Two Worlds’ (Keeley Forsyth Ghost Version)
A glitchy, haunting form of musical possession; Keeley Forsyth’s remix of Gazelle Twin’s track ‘Two Worlds’ enhances the shudder inducing atmosphere cultivated by the original offering. Forsyth’s “Ghost” version features on Shadow Dogs, a brand new album of reworkings and reinterpretations of songs from Gazelle Twin’s acclaimed fourth album, Black Dog. The new LP will be released on 18th October via Invada, and features contributions from Gary Numan, Penelope Trappes, BEAK>, Marta Salogni and more of Gazelle Twin’s talented collaborators. (KC)

LISTEN: GIHE on Soho Radio with Julia-Sophie (19.08.24)

Tash and Kate were back on Soho Radio playing loads of new music from some of their favourite female, non-binary and LGBTQIA+ artists. Mari offered some of her “musical musings” too. They spoke about having a brat summer, Tash’s hectic holiday schedule and Kate’s excitement for Gazelle Twin’s upcoming appearance at Birmingham’s Supersonic Festival in September.

Kate also caught up with Anglo-French electronic artist and GIHE fave Julia-Sophie to talk about her debut album, forgive too slow. Released via Ba Da Bing Records at the end of July, Julia spoke earnestly about the challenges she faced when creating the record and the joy she felt when Sharon Van Etten reached out via Instagram to say that she had been listening to it.

Whitelands – ‘Cheer’
GIHE fave London shoegazers Whitelands came into the Soho Radio studio earlier this month to chat to us about their debut album, Night-bound Eyes Are Blind To The Day, and I have been listening to the record on a loop since its release. I saw them live supporting Slowdive at Hammersmith Apollo, and it was wonderful to hear their magnetic sounds ring out around the walls of such a prestigious venue. The GIHE team are so excited to see them again at their London album launch gig at Rough Trade on 5th March.

Hypsoline – ‘Disposable Girl’
Firm favourites who we’ve been lucky enough to have play for us a couple of times now, Brighton’s Hypsoline have now shared new single ‘Disposable Girl’. Written from the viewpoint of a heartbroken teenage girl, the track oozes the band’s scuzzy power and versatility of front person Trilby’s rich vocals. Building with a hazy allure, it showcases the band’s ability to create instantly catchy rock anthems, and I can’t wait to hear more from them this year. (Managing Editor – Mari Lane)

HAVVK – ‘Take It From Me’
We’re extremely excited to have Irish trio HAVVK return to play live for us at our next gig on 28th March at Shacklewell Arms. Having headlined the first ever gig we hosted back in 2016, it feels pretty special to be hosting them again, and – with support from lovely bands like Athabaska and Rats-Tails – it promises to be a dreamy night! This latest single showcases all the gritty, grunge-fuelled energy and celestial splendour we’ve come to know and love from the band. To Fall Asleep, the new album from HAVVK, is set for release on 15th March. Come and celebrate its release with us at The Shacklewell Arms! Tickets here. (ML)

Projector – ‘Don’t Give Anything Up For Love’
Congratulations to Brighton trio Projector on the release of their debut album, Now When We Talk It’s Violence. Unsurprisingly, it’s a superb record that showcases the band’s evolution in sound, full of grinding riffs, intense vocals and propulsive beats. This is my favourite track from the record. (KC)

Wisp – ‘Once Then We’ll Be Free’
19 year-old San Francisco-based musician Wisp has been on my radar for a while now. I’ve been soaking up her lush shoegaze sounds, and this single ‘Once Then We’ll Be Free’ is another potent blend of her hushed vocals, swirling riffs and driving beats. (KC)

Nightbus – ‘Average Boy’
Released via So Young Records, ‘Average Boy’ is the dreamy new release from Northern trio Nightbus. Speaking about the track, the band explain: “‘Average Boy’ is a narrative I’m sure many of us can relate to. The feeling of inadequacy, dysphoria, a longing for something that might never materialise. Those small moments that feel like destiny are reduced to bittersweet memories. We all search for something, we get caught in cycles, we lose our way, half the time we don’t even know what we’re looking for. Gender, perspective, culture, we are all in some way the average boy.” (KC)

Brimheim – ‘Normies’
I’m a big fan of Danish-Faroese artist Brimheim, and this single has been swirling around my head all month. Taken from her upcoming second album, RATKING, which is set for release on 22nd March, her new record explores shame, self-deception and tragic love. I adored her debut album, can’t hate myself into a different shape, and think her new offering will be equally as excellent. She’ll be playing The Lexington on Weds 22nd May. (KC)

Baby In Vain – ‘Afterlife’
This is the title track from Danish trio and longtime GIHE favourites Baby In Vain’s latest album. The record showcases a softer, more shoegazey approach to the band’s songwriting, compared to earlier heavier releases, but it still retains the slow-burning tenderness that makes all of their music so compelling. total tommy – ‘microdose’
This is the debut single from Australian songwriter total tommy, who has recently singed to [PIAS] Recordings. A lovely hit of lo-fi indie-grunge, ‘microdose’ was written in total tommy’s bedroom studio in Sydney on a stormy night, and reflects on an addictive, all-consuming crush. (KC)

Tusks – ‘Strangers’
Another affecting, evocative offering from London-based electronic artist Tusks here. ‘Strangers’ is lifted from her upcoming album, Gold, which is set for release on 12th April via One Little Independent Records. She will be playing at Rough Trade East on 13th April to celebrate the release of the album. (KC)

Tolü Makay – ‘Mind & Body’
Nigerian-Irish artist Tolü Makay has returned with this wonderful new single about the importance of being present in the moment, with her emotive voice guiding listeners through this process. Speaking about the track, Tolü explains: “’Mind & Body’ explores the anxiety we feel when our body is numb to the moment while our mind is drowning in senses, screaming for us to be present in the here and now. It’s about allowing ourselves to breathe, about taking care of our bodies, about being present even when everything is moving so rapidly. In this cultural moment we are so concerned and cornered by our thoughts, our appearance, our voices and narratives that we tell ourselves. It is so hard to simply just be. ‘Mind & Body’ is a reminder to be present. To come together. Not just with yourself, but with each other. In Mind and Body.” (KC)

Elsa Hewitt – ‘Citrinitas’
I saw Elsa Hewitt play live again recently at Loki in Brixton, and I was hypnotised by her lo-fi, but very intricate synth loops and vocal improvisations. This wonderful soundscape ‘Citrinitas’, is taken from her upcoming eighth album, Chaos Emeralds, which is set for release on 12th April. Chaos Emeralds is the result of an intense few years of personal change and growth for the artist, full of field recordings and poetry extracts, all underscored by her trademark magnetic electronica. Sheherazaad – ‘Dhund Lo Mujhe’
Following last year’s completely spellbinding debut single, ‘Mashoor’, Brooklyn-based composer and vocalist Sheherazaad has now shared the second taste of her upcoming album. As stirring waves of sound intertwine with a somewhat buoyant energy, ‘Dhund Lo Mujhe’s celebratory tone is at once juxtaposed with a disconcerting undercurrent. Building to a swirling rich cacophony, it offers a stark reminder to embrace our own unique joy in the face of damaging stereotypes. Qasr, the upcoming debut album from Sheherazaad, is set for release on 1st March via Erased Tapes. (ML)

M(h)aol – ‘Pursuit’
Irish post punks M(h)aol have returned as a four piece with this cutting new single ‘Pursuit’. Drummer and vocalist Constance Keane explains more about the pent up frustration and fear that underscored the track’s conception: “’Pursuit’ is about the experience of being followed home. Sadly, I think it’s something most women have experienced, and something that makes you change your behaviour on a very practical level. It first happened to me when I was 12, and it stayed with me for a long time. The experience of choosing your outfit based on how quickly it could help you get out of a dangerous situation is something I don’t even notice I’m doing sometimes, and that in itself scares me. What am I doing choosing shoes I know I can run fast in, rather than the ones that would go better with my outfit? As a whole, the song is built out of frustration that has accumulated over the past 30 years of being a woman in public.” (KC)

Lambrini Girls – ‘God’s Country’
Currently taking the world by storm, Lambrini Girls are not afraid to call out the government and those complicit in the deterioration of society. Offering a brutal condemnation of ‘Great’ Britain, latest single ‘God’s Country’ seethes with an immense energy and angst-driven power, emanating a raging sense of urgency throughout, cementing Lambrini Girls once again as a truly formidable force that we need now more than ever. Of the track, the band clarify: ““God’s Country is our long, overdue call-out of the government and rise of the far right… Great Britain. Think colonial, shit-hole, chunk of land. Thriving off unhinged nationalism, fed to us by the right red hand of unelected prime ministers… We could deep dive into inspirations and influences- but the song’s about politics, not us. We hope the song speaks for itself. Rishi, Cameron, Cummings, Starmer – you’re all on our shit list.” (ML)

CLT DRP – ‘Until You Showed Me’
Described as a “gender-fluid love sing”, this is the first new material from Brighton-based art punks CLT DRP since they released their second album, Nothing Clever, Just Feelings, via Venn records last year. Speaking about the track, powerhouse vocalist Annie Dorrett explains: “Femininity is a word that has haunted me my whole life, whereas Masculinity is something that I’ve longed for. ‘Until You Showed Me’ is a love song to my current partner for making my gender fluidity something that they nourish and make room for rather than dismiss or ignore. It’s no secret that a lot of people feel the need to lean into a gender role in order to gain respect or normalcy and if they mess with anything outside the binary it can seem threatening. Funnily enough I’ve found myself playing with my femininity a lot more now that I’ve found comfort in my skin again. This song is a little ode to the queers and anyone who strays from the binary in any way small or large. Break the wall from either side, that’s how we get ‘em to listen.” (KC)

Loose Articles – ‘I’d Rather Have A Beer’
Having recently announced the release of their debut album later this year, Manchester’s Loose Articles bring all the racing, roaring energy in latest single ‘I’d Rather Have A Beer’. Offering a warning about those toxic people who won’t make the same effort for you that they expect from you, it’s a perfect, post-punk ode to prioritising your own self worth, having fun with with your pals (over a nice pint) and moving on with your life. Bridget. – ‘Take Me Down’
Taken from her debut EP, Damage Reversal, ‘Take Me Down’ is an anthemic offering from Essex-based grunge punk artist Bridget. She will be playing a gig at Luna in Leytonstone on 16th March as part of her EP tour, so if you like what you hear, make sure you grab a ticket to go and see her. (KC)

SPIDER – ‘an object of desire’
‘object of desire’ is the title track from Irish-born, London-based alt-pop artist SPIDER’s brand new EP. The record is a gritty, candid offering, exploring “the unholy trinity of young adulthood” and the web of sex, objectification and self-worth. We interviewed SPIDER on our Soho Radio show for our Great Escape Festival special last year, and she was a breath of fresh air. We’re so excited to see her getting the attention she deserves. SPIDER will play her first ever London headline show at London’s Camden Assembly on March 20th. (KC)

Gouge Away – ‘Dallas’
I was hooked on ‘Stuck In A Dream’, the powerhouse previous single from Florida-based alternative five piece Gouge Away. ‘Dallas’ marks a gear change in sound for the band, but it’s still a heady, corrosive sonic dive into what it feels like to hit rock bottom. It’s taken from Gouge Away’s upcoming third album, Deep Sage, which is set for release on 15th March via Deathwish Inc. (KC)

Heave Blood & Die – ‘Men Like You’
I love this intense offering from Norwegian post-punk collective Heave Blood & Die. It’s lifted from their fourth album, Burnout Codes, which they released back in January. Dedicated to bassist Eivind Imingen, who decided to end his life just following the recordings of the album, Burnout Codes shows the Norwegian collective offering their most textured and innovative album to date, acting as a tender tribute to the talent of their bandmate. Dissolved Girl – ‘Silt’
This London-based four piece are named after one of my favourite Massive Attack songs. Dissolved Girl have been meticulously crafting their debut album over the past four years, and this track ‘Silt’ is the second hint at what’s to come. Brooding riffs, trip-hop style beats and a potent vocal all blend together to create a captivating, grunge-infused soundscape. (KC)

CHERYM – ‘Alpha Beta Sigma’
Having just released their debut album, Take It Or Leave It, this month via Alcopop! Records, Northern Irish trio Cherym have been big faves of ours since I first fell in love with them playing Paper Dress Vintage back in 2021. And I was lucky enough to re-live this experience last Saturday as they returned to the venue, delivering an even more wonderful set to an even bigger and adoring crowd. Fizzing with all the colourful punk-pop energy we’ve come to know and love, ‘Alpha Beta Stigma’ offers a fierce reflection on the immense gender inequality and violence against women that still permeates Irish society. One of the most exciting bands around at the moment, I fully expect to be seeing and hearing lots more of Cherym throughout 2024. (ML)

Laura Jane Grace – ‘Birds Talk Too’
Having just released their new album, Hole In My Head, earlier this month, legendary Against Me! Front-person, author and transgender activist Laura Jane Grace offers an uptempo ode to the city of Amsterdam in latest single ‘Birds Talk Too’. I love how its fuzzy punk energy propels the distinctive resonant power of Laura’s vocals, creating a fiercely fun-filled anthem. (ML)

The Empty Page – ‘Cock Of The Fifth Year’
The new single from Manchester’s The Empty Page, ‘Cock Of The Fifth Year’ offers a raging reflection on those ‘jock-type’ guys who often use their size and gender as a means of intimidating others. Of the track, front person Kel explains: “Unfortunately, there are still a lot of blokes like that I encounter when walking around my home city of Manchester. Swaggering, mouthy bellends who can be pretty intimidating when you’re a woman just trying to get from a to b.” I love its gritty energy and the raw power of Kel’s vocals, and can’t wait for the release of The Empty Page’s new album, Imploding, on 24th May. Bleach Brain – ‘Crack’
Bleach Brain are a Liverpool-based punk/grunge trio who create anthems filled with heavy riffs and distorted vocals. This track ‘Crack’ is lifted from their excellently named EP, EAT SHIT, which they released at the beginning of the month. The band describe their new record as “a rebellious, angry, energetic EP with songs about violence, abuse, and capitalism.” (KC)

Charley Stone – ‘A Scream’
If you live in London and go to gigs, you probably already know Charley Stone. With a musical CV too long to list, and currently a gigging guitarist in bands such as Sleeper and Desperate Journalist, she has now announced the release of her debut solo album. The first song that Stone ever wrote on electric guitar (back in the last century!), it offers an insight into her creative process and artistic license. With scuzzy hooks that ripple alongside distinctive vocals oozing luscious delayed tones, it builds with a whirring energy to a colourful cacophony. Here Comes The Actual Band, the debut album from Charley Stone, is set for release on 29th May. (ML)

NEXT TO NADA – ‘Whine, Lips’
This track is lifted from London-based noise makers NEXT TO NADA’s upcoming EP, WHINE // MOTHS, which they will be self-releasing on the 15th March. It’s a grinding, punk-infused reflection on pent up frustrations, which vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Georgie explains further: “‘Whine, Lips’ is a self-lament/piss-take that I wrote whilst in a particularly lengthy period of self-destructive behaviour. Dissociation, jealousy, unease, apprehension and defeatism were all running amok in the closed quarters of a brain – leading to (what feels like) a tiresome, vicious circle of poor coping mechanisms and pessimism.” NEXT TO NADA will be playing live at the Dublin Castle on 30th May. Um Jennifer? – ‘Glamour Girl’
Having first fallen in love with New York trans duo Um Jennifer last year when I couldn’t get enough of their single ‘Girl Class’, I’m now equally obsessed with latest offering ‘Glamour Girl’. With its playful energy and catchy hooks, it reflects on the pros and cons of recurring patterns in relationships. It’s a fuzzy lo-fi slice of punk-pop perfection that leaves me excited to hear the entirety of Um Jennifer’s new EP, The Girl Class EP, which will be out on my birthday (5th April, for those who don’t know). Parsnip – ‘The Light’
A new discovery for me, Melbourne band Parsnip have just announced details of their upcoming album, Behold, which will be released on 26th April via Upset The Rhythm. New single ‘The Light’ fizzes with jangly hooks and an uptempo Raincoats-esque energy; the perfect uplifting antidote to our dreary British weather. (ML)

Lilith Ai ft. Kimya Dawson – ‘Fawn’
Taken from her upcoming album, Serial Killers Prefer Blondes, which is set for release on 13th September via Cruisin Records, this track from London-based indie-rock artist Lilith Ai is an affecting blend of confessional lyrics, atmospheric guitars and rousing beats. (KC)

Emily Magpie – ‘Sunflowers’
Long time favourite, Bristol’s Emily Magpie, has announced that her new album, There Are Other Forms Of Strength, will be released on 19th April. Our first taster of the album comes in the form of glistening new single, ‘Sunflowers’. Flowing with a shimmering energy as Emily’s soulful vocals ripple alongside an uptempo funk-fused allure. (ML)

KIN – ‘Party Anthem’
The new single from London’s KIN, ‘Party Anthem’ offers a poignant reflection on women’s safety. Written back in 2020, inspired by the Reclaim The Streets movement, it oozes a captivating dark allure. Flowing with Grace Strickland De Souza’s crystalline vocals and a swirling instrumentation, a stirring melancholic soundscape is created. (ML)

GIHE: Albums & EPs of 2023

After sharing our Tracks Of 2023 last week, the Get In Her Ears team want to shine a light on some of the brilliant Albums & EPs that have been released during the last 12 months. These eclectic offerings resonated with us on many different levels and we’ll be talking about them long into the future. Huge thanks to all of the bands and artists who submitted music to us this year. These records kept us going and distracted us momentarily from the uncertain world we’re currently all living in.

So, in alphabetical order, here are our top Albums & EPs of 2023 (including multiple Honorable Mentions at the end, because we couldn’t resist…)

ALBUMS

ARXX – Ride Or Die
You all know how much we absolutely adore Brighton duo Hanni and Clara – aka ARXX – here at GIHE. Having been mega fans since they first played live for us back in 2018, the news that they were releasing their debut album this year was met with oodles of excitement from Tash, Kate and I, so I couldn’t not include Ride Or Die in this list of favourites. The album really showcases all there is to love about the utterly unique duo, and their incredible ability to fuse genres into something that is completely their own. From the catchy, pop-fuelled singalong choruses of the likes of ‘Baby Uh Huh’ and title track ‘Ride Or Die’, to the gritty energy and fierce allure of ‘Iron Lung’, and the soaring, heartfelt raw emotion of ‘The Last Time’ and ‘Never Want To Go Back’, ARXX continue to establish themselves as master creators of the freshest, most addictive and most empowering, indefinable life-affirming anthems. They truly are one of the most exciting – and completely lovely – bands in the universe, and we couldn’t be happier that they exist.

body / negative – everett
A shimmering piece of ambient shoegaze that briefly pacifies the ache of long-lingering grief, multi-instrumentalist Andy Schiaffino aka body / negative’s third album is a deeply moving listen. Released via Track Number Records and mastered by Slowdive’s Simon Scott, everett is a poetic rumination on love, loss and how they deeply affect our interactions with the world. Dedicated to Schiaffino’s late mother and father, everett features contributions from Randall Taylor (Amulets) and Madeline Johnston (Midwife). everett is a remarkable effort from an artist in acute pain. By recording through a hand-held tape recorder and filtering their vocals through a landline-style microphone, they give the record a familiar, yet far-off feeling of transience and disconnected communication. Tracing over their grief with meticulous care and tranquility, body / negative lulls listeners into a state of bittersweet calm across each of everett‘s eight tracks, with ‘persimmon’ in particular providing a glowing example of their ability to transform painful memories into sublime, ambient sounds. A truly beautiful and emotional listen that I will return to for years to come.

CLT DRP – Nothing Clever, Just Feelings
Released via Venn Records and full of visceral, incendiary anthems like ‘New Boy’, ‘I See My Body Through You’ and ‘Daily Affirmations’, CLT DRP’s second album is a primal, urgent reflection on heartbreak, new-found strength in vulnerability, gender fluidity and dark humour. The Brighton-based art punk trio blew us away when they performed at The Great Escape Festival earlier this year, with the album’s title track proving to be one of many highlights during their set. Fuelled by Annie’s powerful crystalline vocals, Daphne’s phenomenal percussion and Scott’s jagged, mind-melting guitar FX, Nothing Clever, Just Feelings is a cathartic statement that celebrates the act of feeling your emotions without over-analysing them. Annie’s defiance and lyrical directness is as intoxicating as the cacophony of potent noise that swirls around her. This unfiltered self-expression permeates the whole record, underscored by the desire to cut loose and dance away your distractions.(KC)

Divide and Dissolve – Systemic
“If you can imagine something ending, then it can end,” offered Divide and Dissolve‘s saxophonist and guitarist Takiaya Reed during an interview with GIHE back in 2021. Visualising a world without injustice is at the core of what Divide and Dissolve do. Their uniquely heavy sound is designed to erode the foundations of colonialism and liberate the land for indigenous communities. Since the release of their debut album, BASIC, in 2017, Reed and her bandmate percussionist Sylvie Nehill have been honing their unique form of gargantuan-yet-graceful noise in order to help cauterize the wounds of colonialism. Their fourth offering, Systemic, is equally as commanding and as poignant as its predecessors. Released via Invada Records and produced by Ruban Neilson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Systemic continues to push Divide and Dissolve’s essential, empowering message into the ether. Fuelled by Reed’s distinctive, doom-ridden saxophone sounds and Nehill’s phenomenal percussion, the nine tracks that make up Systemic seek to undermine the separateness that colonialism enforces, and engage listeners from all walks of life, uniting them in a sometimes blissful, but more often blisteringly heavy cacophonies of resistance. Changing the heavy music landscape one record at a time, the patience and empathy that underscores Divide and Dissolve’s sound inspires a deep sense of awe and respect. (KC)

ĠENN – unum
A dynamic, shape-shifting record inspired by feelings of otherness, Malta-via-Brighton art punks ĠENN have crafted an intricate narrative of multicultural experiences, personal anxieties and a powerful sense of togetherness on their debut album, unum. Released via their own label Liminal Collective, the record is an urgent reflection on the band’s predominantly Maltese roots, how it feels to be an outsider, and how the universal feeling of wanting to belong is more powerful than the overwhelming social, mental and political barriers that try to prevent this from occurring. Co-produced by ĠENN, Gilla Band’s Dan Fox & Tom Hill and mastered by Katie Tavini, unum – which means “oneness, unity, a sense of being whole” in Latin – is a keenly observed statement of self-autonomy and the often exhausting journey that comes with trying achieve to it. It’s a compelling, vital record that re-enforces the powerful bonds of friendship between its creators, and offers listeners a glimpse into a world of experiences they may not always be privy to; all underscored by formidable riffs and a formidable creative spirit. Glass Isle – Vels d’Èter
Described as “music of the ether…” London-based Brazilian artist Zuleika AvTes aka Glass Isle’s sound is elusive and intoxicating. Released via Outer Reaches, Glass Isle has created a hypnotic rumination on Vels d’Èter (‘Veils Of Ether’) that becomes more affecting each time it’s listened to. Across 20 tracks, all varying in length, she takes listeners on a journey through mortality and memory, dreams and ritual, solitude and transformation; all via the medium of field recordings captured in London & São Paulo, gossamer-like drone sounds, and her stirring, far-off vocals. Flickering between the shadows of this world and the realms of another, her music casts a graceful gloom over her listeners. Vels d’Èter is not available on streaming services, but it can be bought as a digital download and on limited edition clear C74 Cassette tape via bandcamp. Listen or buy your copy here. (KC)

HAWXX – Earth, Spit, Blood and Bones
Unapologetic and aggressive, Earth, Spit, Blood and Bones is as cathartic as albums come in 2023. It is the heaviest that HAWXX has ever been, capturing all the rage that inevitably weighs down on anyone paying attention to the state of the world. The album is packed with powerful songs that channel the pain of some of the most traumatic news stories to come out of recent history. ‘Death Makes Sisters of Us All’ comes with a music video featuring a few dozen women and non-binary people all singing together in an aching lament at how dangerous the world can be for us. HAWXX is a band that doesn’t shy away from the things that are difficult to talk about and we’re all better off for having them in the world.

Hilary Woods – Acts Of Light
On Acts Of Light, her third full-length release via iconic label Sacred Bones, Irish multi-instrumentalist Hilary Woods has crafted nine shadowy fugues that smoulder and flicker across the senses. Written, recorded, mixed and produced by Woods over the two years she spent between the west coast of Ireland and Dublin, the album includes a myriad of idiosyncratic sounds. It features the hypnotic voices of the Palestrina choir together with the Galway City Chamber Choir, strings by Oslo-based musician Jo Berger Myhre and is interspersed with field recordings that Woods collected during her time spent travelling through the northwest of Spain. These elements have culminated into the nine “hypnotic dirges” which form her truly potent and disarming body of work. Whilst it is shrouded in shadow, Acts Of Light it is ultimately a hopeful record; rooted in intense nostalgia and a desire to connect the past with the present. Hinako Omori – stillness, softness…
An uplifting sonic delight that encourages listeners to let go of the past and relinquish feelings of doubt, this record from London-based artist and composer Hinako Omori is a true favourite here at GIHE. Released via Houndstooth Records, stillness, softness…, retains the soothing, enigmatic qualities of her stunning debut record, …a journey, but this time, Omori looks inwards and leans into a more contemporary, song-based structure. She has expanded her use of synths and seraphic vocals to gently dismantle the barriers that have held her back from finding inner peace. She surrenders herself to the unknown and acknowledges the cyclical process of healing, and how this shapes our interactions with the world and the people around us. Urging her listeners to “break free” from their own chains, Omori has delivered another captivating, altruistic piece of music on stillness, softness… that resonates further each time it’s listened to. Hearing her perform it live at London’s ICA earlier this year was a sublime experience. (KC)

Joanna Sternberg – I’ve Got Me
Probably my most listened to album of the year, I’ve Got Me is the second full release from New York based artist and multi-instrumentalist Joanna Sternberg. They masterfully play every single instrument on the record, and solely wrote each and every song, showcasing their ability to create a unique, genre-spanning collection. With an education in Classical and Jazz music, throughout the album Sternberg weaves a rich tapestry of beautifully lilting folk-strewn sounds alongside reflective narrative lyricism; all brought together with their raw, impassioned vocals. A truly exquisite listen. I was lucky enough to see Joanna Sternberg live at King’s Place last month – a beautifully intimate and really special performance. (ML)

Maple Glider – I Get Into Trouble
Australian artist Tori Zietsch – aka Maple Glider – released her second album, I Get Into Trouble, this year and I haven’t been able to get enough of its glistening musicality. Offering a poignant reflection on her Christian upbringing, reflecting on themes of shame, consent and sexuality, it’s a truly stirring collection of starkly honest, yet delicately beautiful, compositions. As the heartfelt crystalline splendour of Zietsch’s vocals ripples with raw emotion throughout, the album showcases her ability to reflect on potentially difficult subject matter with an immersive cathartic grace and shimmering majestic allure. ME REX – Giant Elk
Released this year on Big Scary Monsters, Giant Elk from faves ME REX offers a cathartic journey through their trademark exquisite lyrical storytelling and glistening musicality. With a raw, impassioned energy and stirring emotion, the album addresses the violence and loneliness woven into the legacy of masculinity, exuding a poignant heart-string tugging power throughout – particularly with the twinkling splendour of personal album highlight ‘Halley’. Having ME REX headline for us at a sold out Shacklewell Arms this February was also a definite highlight of the year for me. It was a real joy to host them, and witness them delivering their blissful indie-pop goodness to a sea of adoring fans. (ML)

Problem Patterns – Blouse Club
Since they shared their debut single ‘Big Shouty’ with us back in 2020, Problem Patterns have been lighting up our musical radar with their relatable, riotous anthems. The Belfast-based DIY punks have progressed from making music together as a hobby, to becoming a personal favourite of Riot Grrrl icon Kathleen Hanna and winning a Northern Irish Music prize. These accomplishments are the product of sheer determination, authentic friendship and a shared defiance in the face of adversity. On their debut album Blouse Club, Alanah Smith, Bethany Crooks, Beverley Boal and Ciara King use their collective talents to rage against misogyny, classism and homophobia in both societal and industry spheres. Not defined by traditional band structures, they routinely switch up instruments and mic duties for their songs, which makes for a refreshing take on the subject they’re tackling. This collective instinct, raw emotion and radical resilience permeates each of the twelve tracks on their debut full length record. Named after the unofficial speakeasies that were frequented by women in the wake of World War II when they were denied the right to drink in public bars, Blouse Club is the musical manifesto of four friends whose sound refuses to remain underground. Their sold out headline show for us at Sebright Arms in November was a highlight of the year. It sounds cliché to say it, but Problem Patterns really are a band that you have to see live. They need to be appreciated in all of their riotous (and hilarious) glory. It has been a privilege to watch them flourish this year. (KC)

Ratboys – The Window
After more than ten years together, Chicago’s Ratboys released their fourth album in 2023. Another that’s been on repeat for me, The Window is filled with all the dreamy, lilting hooks and fuzzy allure I could ever need, and Julia Steiner’s vocals are just sugar sweet perfection. It was a real treat to finally catch Ratboys live at Omeara last month, along with Norwich faves SUDS. Delivering a set even more dreamy than I could have hoped for, it was captivating and comforting in equal measure; a much-needed ray of sunlight in an increasingly dark time. (ML)

Smoking Gives You Big Tits – Guts For Starters
A live acoustic version of ‘My Favourite Fact About Maggie’ put Smoking Gives You Big Tits on my radar a while ago, and I had been waiting with baited breath for anything more from them. They dropped their debut album in July and it is packed with wall-to-wall punk bangers. Their entire existence is a celebration of everything the DIY punk scene is today – they’re loud and rambunctious and they take uncensored joy in community and creativity. Their songs are upbeat and lively and proud to stand up for what they believe in – inclusivity and hope and making it clear where fascists can shove it. (KS)

Blonde Maze – I Stay Dancing With You
It wouldn’t be an end of year round up for me without including New York artist Blonde Maze, and thankfully she continues to create the most beautiful and cathartic of offerings. This year, that came in the form of covers EP, I Stay Dancing With You. Featuring her own renditions of the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Rihanna and Modern English, each track still manages to maintain Blonde Maze’s own distinct shimmering energy and unique euphoric splendour. And I remain forever grateful to be able to immerse myself in her truly blissful soundscapes. Having not see her in ‘real life’ since she appeared on our radio show for a second time back in 2017, it was also a real joy to catch up with Blonde Maze at the beginning of the year when she was briefly in the UK! CIRCE – Drawing Wings From The Light
Inspired by the collision of her past and present, Drawing Wings From The Light is a passionate, rapturous collection of slickly produced dark pop tracks from London-based artist Circe. On her second EP, she willingly shares personal epiphanies, unfiltered heartbreaks, precious teenage secrets and cell-shaping theatrical experiences with her listeners. She celebrates the lust, frustration and chaos that comes with being a woman who refuses to be scorned, blending pop melodies with poetic lyrics, seraphic vocals and cinematic synths to celebrate the power of these unfiltered feelings. “Take my blood instead of wine” she offers on opening track ‘Riot Of Sunlight’, a disorientating blend of reverb-heavy riffs and dizzying electronics – an invitation that’s impossible to refuse.
Like her mythical Greek namesake – who was described as “a sorceress…able by means of drugs and incantations to change humans into wolves, lions, and swine” – Circe is a captivating force of nature who finds power and comfort in her dark pop fantasies. Drawing Wings From The Light is a total euphoric delight that highlights her potent, impressive songwriting talents. (KC)

Coolgirl – Failed Reboot
Created entirely in her bedroom studio, Dublin-based artist Lizzie Fitzpatrick aka Coolgirl’s debut EP is an ode to the power of our personal relationship with sound. Released via VETA Records, Failed Reboot is a vivid, cinematic collection of synths, intriguing samples and sparse vocals that transports listeners into sonic spheres which seamlessly shift like quicksilver in tone and mood. GIHE fans will recognise Fitzpatrick as the former front person of grunge trio Bitch Falcon, but under her new solo moniker, she experiments with everything from Korg synths to tin whistles and saxophone in order to create her unconventional offerings. On Failed Reboot, she takes listeners on a bittersweet, thrilling journey that traverses waves of deep melancholy, potent nostalgia and unspoken desire. She evokes a potent feeling of transience, infatuation and intrigue that often permeates electronic music, but she retains a fresh unconventional sonic perspective throughout. (KC)

Dream Phone – Dream Phone
Probably my favourite new discovery of 2023, Oxford duo Dream Phone completely won me over when they played live for us supporting ME REX in February. With every single second oozing Jen and Hannah’s sparkling charisma and vibrant energy, it was a completely unique experience, the excitement of which is not lost in their eponymous debut EP. Showcasing their ability to combine quirky voice augmentation with infectious synth-driven glitch-pop soundscapes, Dream Phone harks back to the innovative layering and sampling of Kathleen Hanna’s solo Julie Ruin record; oozing a euphoric riot grrrl inspired drive, whilst maintaining the duo’s trademark playful allure. Covering themes ranging from Buffy The Vampire Slayer to saying no to people pleasing, what’s not to love?! (ML)

Fräulein – Pedastal
Having first come across Joni and Karsten aka Fräulein via an online festival that Hanni from ARXX hosted during 2020’s lockdown, I was instantly utterly obsessed, and it’s been so wonderful to see the duo going from success to success since then. This year, they not only supported legends Big Joanie on their European tour (what a dream combo!), but released their second EP, Pedastal. Building on the gritty power of last year’s debut, it offers just under 15 minutes of fierce, grunge-fuelled splendour. These two just continue to hone their craft of creating utterly unique anthems that ooze an immense power and mysterious allure in equal measure, as well as being one of the most exciting live bands I’ve ever seen, and I’m pretty sure they’re headed for world domination very soon. HotWax – A Thousand Times
This was the first of two EPs that the prolific Hastings trio HotWax released in 2023. Together, Tallulah, Lola & Alfie create the type of guitar music that other bands take years to master. Their sound is raw, but self assured, visceral yet melodic. Each time I’ve seen them play, I’ve felt an overwhelming rush of joy, because I know I’m witnessing something truly special. Full of blissfully bruising guitar anthems like ‘Rip It Out’ and ‘Treasure’, their debut EP is crammed with buzzing basslines, commanding beats and raucous guitar riffs, seamlessly flicking between melodic verses and riff-heavy breakdowns. Their chemistry on stage is phenomenal, and their set at The Great Escape Festival earlier this year blew us away. Championed by Courtney Love, Nova Twins and Wolf Alice, HotWax seem destined for great things. Read more about their whirlwind year in my interview with them here(KC)

The Meffs – Broken Britain Pt. 2
Broken Britain Pt. 2 was released just 3 months after Broken Britain Pt. 1 dropped in December 2022, which is an incredibly quick turnaround for so many frantic punk tracks. Each one solidifies The Meffs as one of the bands on the forefront of the punk scene today. Rapid drums, shrieking guitars and unbridled rage make up The Meffs’ signature sound and it is impossible not to get swept up in their energy. If you’re not angry about the things they’re angry about (war, sexism, the stagnation of the economy) at the start of each song, you most certainly will be by the time they finish. (KS)

Midwife & Vyva Melinkolya – Orbweaving
From the lullaby-esque tones of opener ‘Miss America’, through to the epic twelve minutes of the all-encompassing final eponymous track, Midwife and Vyva Melinkolya’s collaborative EP Orbweaving perfectly pacifies the pain of the past. Written and recorded at Midwife’s studio in New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert, the five songs that form the record are a beautiful byproduct of the altruistic environment they were created in. From nights spent “herping” on empty roadsides looking for roadkill and orb-weaver spiders, to meaningful moments shared between them in the studio, Orbweaving smoulders with the residual heat of sun-scorched sands, but it’s laced with the shiver-inducing melancholy of desolate desert nights too. Whilst it may feel bleak and fragile in places, there is a truly bright, human thread that connects Orbweaving. Bathe yourself in Midwife’s trademark “heaven metal” and Vyva Melinkolya’s evocative shoegazey noise, both of which are seamlessly tethered here. (KC)

Slothrust – I Promise
I’m not sure I’ve talked enough about my obsession with Slothrust on GIHE, but – having been a fan for a few years – seeing them live in New York last year just completely took my breath away. So, I was super happy that they released a new EP this year. Consisting of no less than four different renditions of Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’, including an epic extended version (fifteen minutes of pure swirling joy), I Promise also contains two new original tracks, oozing the band’s trademark scuzzy, raw emotion and blissful allure, plus a magical cover of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’. A short but sweet collection, showcasing all there is to love about Slothrust. (ML)

Yanna A – Who Knows What’s In Me, Will You Find Out?
I’ve been a massive fan of Yanna A for as long as I can remember. She has a way with a loop pedal that makes her stand out from most other solo guitarists. She doesn’t perform live very often, but if you ever get a chance to, you’ll be undoubtedly blown away by the sounds she is capable of making on her own. It doesn’t feel possible, even though you’re watching her with your own eyes. In January, she released her five-track EP, Who Knows What’s In Me, Will You Find Out?, which is a perfect introduction to her haunting, ethereal music, combining multi-layered, growling guitar with a chorus of soulful vocals.
