Video Premiere: Piney Gir – ‘Puppy Love’

Having shared a stage with the likes of Gaz Coombes and Noel Gallagher, Kansas-born London-based artist Piney Gir has been charming our ears for some time. Now, following last year’s dreamily eclectic album You Are Here, Piney has shared an effervescent new video for album track ‘Puppy Love’.

Oozing a honey-sweet romanticism, ‘Puppy Love’ glistens with twinkling hooks and sweeping harmonies as an endearing, scuzzy energy flows throughout. On the one hand, nostalgically harking back to the simpler times of crushes and the pain of first (‘Puppy’) love, the track also reflects on the common metaphor for depression – the ‘Black Dog’ – its all-consuming nature, and the struggles of mental health. A poignant and infectious offering, it could just be the perfect, bitter-sweet, accompaniment to the mixed feelings that go hand in hand with the love-filled celebrations of the upcoming month.

Of the track, Piney explains:

“Everyone feels the darkness sometimes, so I’m singing about it… It’s a thin line between Puppy Love and The Black Dog; both can be all consuming and agonising and at times euphoric, manic even.”

VIDEO PREMIERE: Mevrouw Tamara – ‘Jij Fantaseert Liever (You’d Rather Fantasize)’

Sang in her native tongue, Dutch artist Mevrouw Tamara released her latest single ‘Jij Fantaseert Liever (You’d Rather Fantasize)’ earlier this month. Now, she’s shared a beautiful accompanying video that she collaborated on with Dutch dance collective, MAN||CO.

Taken from her recent album In Je Hoofd (In Your Head), Tamara’s track is centered around the theme of depression. She hopes that by singing about mental health, she will “break the taboos” surrounding it, so it “becomes easier to solve the obstacles that are going on between our ears.”

The music video for ‘Jij Fantaseert Liever’ is a cinematic affair, featuring wonderful choreography from the dancers at MAN||CO. Their movements are the perfect mediator between Tamara’s soft, tentative vocals and the gentle orchestral elements that permeate the track. Even if you’re not fluent in Dutch, Tamara’s exploration of low mood translates in both her voice and the movements of her collaborators.

Video Premiere: I, Doris – ‘Just Some Doris’

Following their debut release ‘The Girl From Clapham’, and with support from the likes of Radio X and Resonanace FM, London DIY pop queens and pioneers of ‘mummycore’, I, Doris are back with a new single to see out the year with some much-needed feminist cheer.

The band’s self-proclaimed ‘theme song’, ‘Just Some Doris’ addresses how women are so often seen to be “all the same”, whilst oozing an uplifting, jangly energy and twinkling vocal harmonies. With a no-frills tongue-in-cheek wit, I, Doris reflect on how the opinions of women over a certain age are seen to have no consequence – “Just some Doris, you can just ignore us…” – all the while, juxtaposing a vibrant, sunny spirit with the sexist reality of a patriarchal society. Addressing a very real issue with a refreshing sense of sarcasm and catchy, upbeat tunes, it’s the perfect antidote to all our feelings of despair right now. So, get some Doris in your ears and stand up to the bigots.

Of the track, the band reflect:

“If we were darts players, this song would be our entrance music at the Frimley Green Country Club. We should totally be darts players.”

Video Premiere: Eilis Frawley – ‘strangers’

Following the success of debut single ‘illusions’, and already receiving acclaim from the likes of Radio X’s John Kennedy, Berlin-based artist Eilis Frawley (Party Fears, I Drew Blank) has now shared a poignant new offering.

Fuelled by jangling percussion and whirring glitchy beats, ‘strangers’ reflects on the different, and often troubling, dynamics of relationships. As the subtle, commanding power of Frawley’s poetic spoken word lyricism flows, the track builds to a psychedelic electronic soundscape, oozing a swirling emotion and sparkling, ethereal majesty. Fusing together innovative layers of instrumentation and speech, it’s a wonderfully unique cacophony, with a truly stirring sentiment that resonates deeply: “Your turbulent past running full speed for our future / hands around our throats.”

Of the track, Frawley explains:

“‘strangers‘ is about the various stages of relationships, how quickly my mind can jump to conclusions whether they are realistic or made up, how vulnerable and anxious I often feel in romantic relationships, and the insecurities they raise within me. We’re constantly creating rituals to build strong relationships, and at the end they are often the only thing left.”
