Track Of The Day: Mangö – Demons

A cathartic burst of twisted psych sound; London-based Mangö have shared their latest single ‘Demons’. Released via We Can Do It Records, the track is a dark, fuzzy take down of the inner voices that fuel our stress and anxiety.

Front woman Chloe Spence explains the track’s premise further: “Demons is a power battle song intended to portray the inner workings of one’s mind, and the mental fight we have daily to remain in a positive mindset in today’s fast paced realm of society. The demons are intended to represent negative thoughts, anxieties and emotions that people who struggle with mental health feel daily. We want to portray the demons as an infestation in one’s head, the more attention you give them, the more they thrive and take over.”

‘Demons’ came together when the band were messing around in rehearsals, when guitarist Tom experimented with his whammy pedal whilst comically playing bebop jazz lines and giggling to himself. The band have affectionately dubbed this sound as “a metallic fuzzy bebop tune”, and we think that’s an apt description for this catchy, cathartic slice of psych rock.

Track Of The Day: Something Leather – ‘Sip The Thrill’

A cynical psych-tinged commentary about how we try to simultaneously stall and speed up time; Brighton trio Something Leather have shared their latest single ‘Sip The Thrill’. Their sharp percussion, dark guitar noises and striking use of their vintage Philips organ gives their skepticism an intensely appealing sound.

Released on purple 7” vinyl via We Can Do It Records, this is the third single the band have shared following ‘Shotgun Persona’ and ‘Disappear On Me’. They’ve managed to secure impressive support slots with Black Midi, Phobophobes, Madonnatron, Saint Agnes and JOHN, and they’re slowly building up a reputation as one of the most vibrant and distinctive live bands on the scene. Their beloved 70’s Philips organ is fixed up with old parts of frontwoman Phillie’s grandmother’s first colour TV, giving them an authentic sound with real character.

Speaking about ‘Sip The Thrill’ the band explain: “[It’s] a song about the contradictory way in which we try to live forever without enjoying the process, dedicating so much of our time denying the inevitable. From the stop-start attack of the drums and guitar, to the driving energy of the organ and frenetic ending, juxtaposed with the dark nature of the lyrics, it’s a cynical song about chasing time.”

WATCH: Noise Noir – ‘I Don’t Need You’

Garage rockers Noise Noir have shared Jessica Jones style vigilante visuals to accompany their debut single ‘I Don’t Need You’. The footage – shot and directed by Sergio Angot – shows band members actively taking down those who think it’s okay to harass women in public or private places.

Speaking about the video, vocalist Kelly Chard explains: “I wanted the video for ‘I Don’t Need You’ to be a hyperbole of the feelings I felt when writing the song. Sexual harassment is very present in London, and I wanted to play a Jessica Jones type character in the video. So instead of feeling emotionally strong, I felt physically strong enough to fight off bad guys. Reaching equality is very close to our hearts, so I wanted to highlight sexual harassment and domestic abuse. The video is set in various locations in London throughout the day to show how harassment and violence can happen on the streets in broad daylight, behind closed doors, and in a public busy surrounding.”

Recorded by Margo Broom (Big Joanie, Yassassin), mixed by Greg Burns of Sit Down, and released through Kelly’s independent record label We Can Do It, ‘I Don’t Need You’ is a seething attempt to shout back and empower those who have felt vulnerable or victimised by street harassment. Together; Kelly, guitarist Anthony, bassist Elis & drummer Davide are here to set the record straight through vicious riffs and powerful vocals.
