EP: Emily Magpie – ‘Be Your Own Light’

Following her last release The Witching Hour, Be Your Own Light is the introspective latest EP from Bristol based solo artist Emily Magpie.

Although the opening track ‘Last Train’ deals with the pain of loss and heartbreak, the narrative takes a reflective approach. The emotional analysis lies within not only Magpie’s expressive vocals which soar high for the chorus, but also within the subtle flowing heartbeat of the musical layers. Gentle imagery of raindrops down a glass pane sit within the subconscious as a twinkling soundscape is created. 

Static energy eases us into ‘Stranger’ which contrasts with the sound of nature which sits quietly in the background. “I’m a feral child” Magpie sings as though she is telling us – her confidants – down the telephone. Although she has just told us she is feral, it is hard to believe due to such a gentle landscape being created in the soft beats.

‘Stranger’ paves the way for the title track of the EP which seems to serve two purposes contained within its simmering synths and velvety soft bass. The first purpose being just for the simple joy of entertainment through music, but this could also be combined with an aid to meditation; the gentle sway of Magpie’s dreamy vocals forcing you to focus upon the message of finding happiness within your own self.

It’s seems the message behind the EP is that Be(ing) Your Own Light is not only the key to happiness, but also what makes us all uniquely beautiful. A message that is perfectly summed up in closing track, the brilliantly seductive ‘Things I’d Do?’.

Track Of The Day: Hussy – ‘Slayer’

Playing, recording and layering all her music herself, South London based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sophie Nicole Ellison – aka Hussy – has now released a brand new single.

Oozing jangly, twinkling melodies and a sparkling effervescent charm, ‘Slayer’ flows with Ellison’s luscious rich vocals and catchy hooks. As swirling layers of sound are interwoven with a gritty emotion-strewn edge and reflective heartfelt lyricism, a euphoric slice of dreamy indie pop is created. Of the track, Ellison explains:

“Slayer comes from a place of feeling stuck and willing for something better to
come around, disappearing into your own head… I was feeling frustrated and in a stagnant place, not knowing how to move forward while still burning myself at both ends. A common theme for many twenty somethings of searching for validation through your work. I wanted to
take the listener through the journey of a weird headspace and how you deal with those emotions.”

Track Of The Day: Carolyn’s Fingers – ‘Twice Born’

Having wowed us with previous singles ‘Her Howl’ and ‘Vapour’, and totally charmed us with their hypnotic live set at The Finsbury last year, queer-romantica-electro band Carolyn’s Fingers are back with a wonderfully trippy new video.

Flowing with an eerie, captivating power, ‘Twice Born’ is filled with all the essential symbols that make up Carolyn’s Fingers – flowers, saliva, raves, lights and chokers… Propelled by pounding beats, it interweaves majestic glitchy hooks with soaring ethereal vocals to create a truly spellbinding soundscape. Oozing its twinkling, haunting splendour, it’s sure to cast its spell over you in an instant with its euphoric, yet somewhat disconcerting, power.

Track Of The Day: Eliza Shaddad – ‘Just Goes To Show’

Hazy, nostalgic Prom visuals form the video for Eliza Shaddad‘s latest single ‘Just Goes To Show’, which is taken from her upcoming album Future, released on 26th October via Beatnik Creative. Directed by Patrick Taylor and shot in one of Eliza’s favourite venues in London, the video was a bit of a dream come true scenario for Eliza: “the song has always felt like the kind of thing that would be playing in one of those terrible but incredible 90’s movie’s prom scenes, and so I was dying to make a video that played on that.”

Eliza’s shimmering new tune is actually about the heart-cracking, desperate feeling you have just as you’re being broken up with. “Like many songs on the album [‘Just Goes To Show’] deals with themes of escape and regret, but in a rare case here it’s from the perspective of the person being left behind” explains Eliza. It’s these personal, melancholy touches and Eliza’s wonderful reverb-strewn, melodic guitar sounds that make listening to her music so enjoyable.
