Track Of The Day: Sunflower Thieves – ‘Two Halves’

Hazy, lo-fi sounds flow from the fingers of the delightfully named Sunflower Thieves on their latest single ‘Two Halves’. It’s a breezy few minutes of melancholy pop-folk from the Leeds-based band.

Whilst the song’s subject matter may seem sad, their treatment of it is far from so. Sweet harmonies align with their tender lyrics, making ‘Two Halves’ a soothing, catchy laid-back offering. Listen to the track below and follow Sunflower Thieves on Facebook for more updates.

WATCH: Noga Erez – ‘Cash Out’ (feat. SAMMUS)

Noga Erez has shared a set of brutal but fascinating new visuals to accompany her latest single ‘Cash Out’. Co-starring Philadelphia rapper SAMMUS, the video was directed by Hen Makhluf and conceived by Erez and her collaborator Ori Rousso.

The visuals tell the story of a society without men, where women are left to fend for themselves, pitting against each other in punishing street-fights. It brings the track’s context about the contradicting pressures piled on women through consumerist society to life, with stunning clarity.

Speaking about the new video, Erez explains: “We tell a story about a society of women left in a world without men. Specifically, focusing on a group who arrange street fighting meet-ups – fights for the mere joy and rush of adrenaline. In that female-only world we imagine the behaviour of the women and how much of the societal female characteristics remain and what’s lost.”

“The [song’s] intention is to list out things that can make you a successful woman, in the most twisted, chauvinistic way. What society’s version is contradicts itself (eat breakfast, not too much), and is derived from the image of well-being and wealth that is presented to us alongside commercials about food, food porn etc. It all sums up a person feeling that their mind is exploding from consuming everything that we are fed by society and advertising companies.”

Alongside SAMMUS’ blistering raps – “I can handle many scandals like I am the Pope, not the sistine’s / What I can’t do is dismantle every single trope in our histories.” – Erez’s message is more powerful ad relevant than ever. LISTEN: iiola – ‘Sickly Sweet’

Prepare to be swept away by the sound of iiola‘s new single ‘Sickly Sweet’. The songwriter (formerly known as Shannon Saunders) has shared a stripped back version of the track, and it drips with sugary melancholy. It’s the second single taken from her debut EP Chrysalis, which is set for release later this month.

Speaking about her new track, iiola explains: “‘Sickly Sweet’ is about that horrendous stomach dropping jealousy you feel when you see somebody you used to date happily moving on with somebody else. It’s a bittersweet, physically sickening feeling. I think a lot of us can relate to that one no matter how amicable the break up is.”

Whilst the original music video for the single shows how you can get rid of these bitter sweet feelings, iiola’s new visuals are as clean and as charming as the stripped back version she delivers. ‘Sickly Sweet’ (co-produced by Toby Scott and Paul Harris) instantly charted on Spotify’s New Music Friday in the UK alongside 10 other major international territories including USA, Canada and Germany and has quickly notched up six figure streaming numbers, an impressive feat considering it’s only her second release under her new moniker.
