Track Of The Day: Dama Scout – ‘dan dan bub’

In a hauntingly catchy new offering , London/Glasgow alt-art-rock trio Dama Scout return with their first new track in over three years with ‘dan dan bub‘. Continuing to push boundaries, the band’s comeback track stands with its own sense of creative gravity, putting weight in the boots of art-rock and indie-pop, while still exerting its own fresh footing.

Minimalist percussion kicks off the track creating an expansive soundscape for vocalist Eva Liu to dance across. With an effortlessness disposition that feels like its own affirmation, the lyrics of “dan dan bub’ wreak of emotional exposure and a personal journey of rebuilding. Rawness not only is captured in its poignant lyrics, but throughout Dama Scout’s entire captivating instrumental. Weary, abstract sounds trickle in and out, embodying discomfort and the urge to move as ‘dan dan bub’ pushes on.

Despite the psychological weight, ‘dan dan bub’ carries an unspoken confidence to it, sonically reminiscent of fellow art-rockers Piney Gir and St. Vincent. It is certain that Dama Scout have not skipped a beat, but ripened with their time away. This latest offering is both exploratory and comforting as it takes you on its inward path.

Track Of The Day: Kinney – ‘Unravel’

An ethereal escape is immediately abound in ‘Unravel’, the latest release from LA based indie-electronic artist Kinney. Following on from her 2020 EP So Glad You Exist, the track depicts one piece in the spiralling puzzle of Kinney’s deja vu centered vision.

With elements of minimal acoustic guitar, euphoric vocal layers to dynamic production components, Kinney’s artistry is difficult to pinpoint. ‘Unravel’ is a song without isolation, following no script but emotion. The track begins with solitude – nothing but Kinney’s echoing, choral vocals and a modest guitar track. But during this time, it slowly begins to simmer with electro-tinged hooks, basking in its own lustral reflections while expanding gradually. Lyrically exploring vulnerable moments and the anxieties of massive shifts in our lives, Kinney is experiencing her fears just before she leaps.

On the cusp of diving into a new way of being, ‘Unravel’ is a satisfying anthem for rebirth that captures sonic metamorphosis reminiscent of Bon Iver and FKA Twigs. It is evident that Kinney’s artistic voice knows no bounds of genre nor wisdom. Kinney’s ‘Unravel’ pushes for risk taking with hands of sweeping sonic fluidity. A truly majestic soundscape.

Track Of The Day: Christine Sako – ‘Coda’

Inviting with a breezy-pop disposition, Christine Sako brings us another infectious ear-worm with her latest release ‘Coda‘. Following her recent track ‘Seasoned’ and the shimmering sound of ‘Sediments‘, the Minneapolis musician proves that her artistic identity still has space to unfold as she brings us into another sonic undertaking that is uniquely her own. 

Beat driven melodies and dense layers of synth create cool, crisp layers for the bed of ‘Coda’ to dance upon. It is here where we see the benefits of Sako’s production abilities – sounds concentrated and filled with attention to tonal detail. This track showcases Sako’s use of captivating aspects of electronic soundscapes, juxtaposing them perfectly with the melodies of an energetic-pop anthem. 

‘Coda’ is wholesome in meaning, embodying both the relatable struggle of running into burnout, whilst also providing a feel-good song that captures the empowering feeling of letting go of negativity. Draped in Sako’s glistening, powerful vocals, its chorus is an undeniable hook that is clear and confident with cathartic emotion. 

Christine Sako holds her own with power-pop assertiveness and enticement, as ‘Coda’ holds our attention with its blissful energy.

Track Of The Day: French For Rabbits – ‘The Outsider’

In a luscious third single, New Zealand’s ethereal dream-pop outfit French For Rabbits share ‘The Outsider’, a haunting track stirring in anticipation of the band’s upcoming record, set for release next month. 

Delving further into the delicate world French For Rabbits have created with their poignant album title track ‘The Overflow’, ‘The Outsider’ is a shimmering slice of folk-strewn indie. As Brooke Singer’s impassioned vocals greet the ears with an immersive hushed splendour, she sings her truth in a way that feels like a raw secret. 

Whilst heavenly keys and synths coat the track’s bed, space is created for Singer’s gentle nuancing through inner turmoil – “If I could let go, would I fit in? Would I be what they want without all my inhibitions?”. Singer ponders solitude’s comfort and her struggles in a social setting as she reveals “pushing myself, but I’m faking”. As anxious feelings ruminate, minimal percussion trails across the soundscape of ‘The Outsider’ and pulls the track’s dreamy mix forward with motivation. 

Finally, in a captivating sonic eruption, the track breaks in catharsis as instruments evolve and ‘The Outsider’ comes to a grand finale. French For Rabbits have hosted a multidimensional take about being the ghost in the room wrapped in the sounds of indie, folk and even a hint of emo. Developing such a blissful soundscape in ‘The Outsider’, French For Rabbits have set the stage for The Overflow to be a truly calming escape.
