Track Of The Day: Anushka – ‘Mountains’

If you’re looking for something to funk up your Tuesday, Brighton duo Anushka are here to do just that. Together, Max Wheeler and Victoria Port combine elements of soul, house, jazz and hip hop to create a fresh, psychedelic, up-beat sound.

“It’s a song about how we are so often thrown into situations with people and they just aren’t ready to step up and be in the moment,” the band explain. “It’s about personal growth and how we move on from people, how we reconcile and forgive and about how we become our own strength.”

Anushka are preparing to share their new EP, which will feature artwork from artist and fashion designer Ryan Hawaii, in the next few months.

EP: Nova Twins – ‘Mood Swings’

Whatever mood you find yourself in, we guarantee Nova Twins‘ new EP is going to swing it around. The duo have followed up their self-titled debut with a knockout set of new tracks on Mood Swings, and the duo are sounding as loud and as lethal as ever.

Driven by devious and distorted bass lines, Nova Twins – aka Amy & Georgia – have an unrivaled instinct for writing anarchic anthems. Eponymous opening track ‘Mood Swings’ is a warped reflection of swift emotional shifts that will be buzzing around your brain long after it’s stopped playing. It leads in to the upbeat ‘Strange Towns’ with a chorus so catchy you’ll be singing it out loud as you parade around the streets.

Things take a heavier turn on ‘Losing Sleep’, a defiant three minutes of menacing bass lines, fiery vocals and wicked little guitar riffs. The aptly named ‘Elephant’ closes the EP with more of Nova Twins’ ferocious, uncompromising rhythms and it’s a stomper of a track that will bring the house down when the pair headline Camden Assembly at the end of November (tickets are still available here).

Wherever you are – stop what you’re doing, put Nova Twins on and let the sound of Mood Swings grind you down to dust.

Track Of The Day: Tarantina – ‘Fables’

Self-taught singer, multi-instrumentalist, producer & videographer Tarantina has released a stunning stop-motion video to accompany her new single ‘Fables’. It’s a mesmerising set of self-produced visuals – shot in her bedroom!- from this interesting new artist.

“The track is about the lies we tell ourselves; the blinkers we wear to protect us from what we’d rather ignore,” Tarantina explains. “I wrote ‘Fables’ mid-flight at high speed after jumping headfirst into a relationship that I knew wasn’t going to end well”. The single is the second track to be released from her forthcoming EP Teething, which will be released later this year.

Tarantina “blends fine art processes and pop culture with a DIY aesthetic” to make her music videos. Raised between two juxtaposing worlds – her Mother’s house filled with Portishead and Leftfield (who she’s been touring the world with this year as their lead vocalist), and the home of her father with Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett – Tarantina is the product of these opposing influences with a “staunchly avant-garde twist”.

VIDEO PREMIERE: Queen Zee & The Sasstones – ‘Fly The Pink Flag’

Here at Get In Her Ears, we’re excited and honoured to be hosting the video premiere for Queen Zee & The Sasstones‘ latest track, ‘Fly The Pink Flag’. At their recent gig at The Garage in London supporting Marmozets, front-person Queen Zee dedicated the track to the victims of the Orlando nightclub shootings in 2016 – which claimed the lives of 49 LGBT people.

With their guttural screams and a collective commitment to raising awareness, Queen Zee & The Sasstones are making sure tragic events like this are not forgotten, whilst also giving their LGBTQ fans a chance to escape the horror by dancing and screaming along in solidarity.

The video for ‘Fly The Pink Flag’ was filmed during a live session at Elevator Studios and it captures the band in all their vibrant live glory. Watch the video below and follow Queen Zee & The Sasstones on Facebook for more updates.
