LISTEN: Tiiva – ‘Collide’

An uplifting sonic delight that celebrates the inner strength we find when we allow ourselves to be open and vulnerable, producer and songwriter Tiiva has shared their latest single ‘Collide’. Fresh from remixing tracks by Tiece, Roma and Despicable Zee, Tiiva’s new solo new offering marks a moment of intense personal catharsis.

“‘Collide’ is about the woozy moments where you let yourself be human,” Tiiva explains. “The consuming moments where you’re in the dark and can’t see a way out and the knowing cycle that despite it all, you’re still here. We wear disguises and dress up to keep ourselves feeling strong, every so often you’ll allow it to fall, and be vulnerable. The balance of being strong in a harsh landscape, and still letting yourself be close to people is not something we can easily compartmentalise.”

Pushing through these anxious moments, Tiiva’s soft vocals lilt over fizzing synths and atmospheric beats to create a heady, reassuring slice of electro-pop. “It’s a dangerous game and I’m too tired to fake it” Tiiva gently confesses, as their insecurities blossom into acceptance, forming a lush ambient soundscape for listeners to fall back on in times of uncertainty.

LISTEN: Noga Erez ft. ROUSSO – ‘Story’

A spirited exploration of the way our personal history affects our behaviour when we’re in a relationship, Noga Erez has shared her latest single ‘Story’. Lifted from her highly anticipated second album KIDS, which is set for release via City Slang on 26th March, the Tel Aviv-based musician works closely alongside her creative & life partner Ori Rousso on this slick new offering, which shows the pair taking life’s challenges on the chin together.

Erez & Rousso have been busy working on new music since the release of her debut album Off The Radar in 2017. In 2020 & 2021, they released a string of superb singles including ‘NO News On TV’, ‘You So Done’ and ‘End Of The Road’, and now the duo are set to blaze their unique trail once again on upcoming LP KIDS. “These are songs about what we inherit from past generations, how we pass things on,” Erez explains about the album. “KIDS talks about humanity’s potential for both beauty and destruction.” This outlook is epitomised on new single ‘Story’, which shines a spotlight on both the grit and the glee that comes from being in a long term relationship.

“Everyone brings their past experiences to the relationship even if things are great. Sometimes past situations come in and take over,” Erez eplains about the new track. “ROUSSO is my partner in music as well as my partner in life. This is the first time we tell a story about our relationship in a song and video. It’s a song about a couple fighting and how, in that situation, sometimes what you hear the other person say is not what they actually said. The making of this video was a 10-day couples therapy session for us. As we rehearsed the pretend fighting and martial arts moves we knew that, at times, one of us would get punched just a little too hard. It was so intense and interesting to live in this world, where our relationship comes alive in the most physical way.”

Accompanied by a stunning new set of visuals directed by long-time collaborator Indy Hait, ‘Story’ is another witty, playful offering from this unique duo who have a instinct for crafting intensely memorable alt-pop tunes.

Track Of The Day: 45ACIDBABIES – ‘Mommy’s Favourite 1’

Following the success of last year’s ‘3 (Walk With Me)’, and having shared a stage with the likes of Sleigh Bells and Blood Red Shoes, Dutch garage punks 45ACIDBABIES have now returned with a buoyant new single.

Propelled by a vibrant, playful energy, ‘Mommy’s Favourite 1′ races with swirling layers of sound creating an instantly infectious, danceable cacophony. As scuzzy, electro-driven hooks race alongside the soaring sultry power of Sophia De Geus’ vocals, a psychedelic haze ripples, creating an anthemic slice of indie-pop reminiscent of the likes of PINS. Futuristic, yet with hints of ’80s-infused nostalgia, it’s an uplifting sonic fusion, injecting a much needed colourful groove into our ears. Of the track, the band explain:

“… (it’s) about an Odysee sirene island like situation that refers to the situation we’re all in right now. The COVID-19 life we’re living. It’s sang by ‘the mother’ who kidnaps lost people in the streets and takes them home to submerge them into a hypnotising party that will make you feel like you’ve escaped the real depressing life for a moment. Everything seems all fun and games. The perfect night. But then you find out you can never leave.”

Mommy’s Favourite 1‘ is out now.

LISTEN: girlhouse – ‘loaded gun’

A lush, lo-fi bedroom-pop tune lamenting the painful realisation that you’ve become something you never wanted to be, Portland-born Nashville-based musician girlhouse has shared her latest single ‘loaded gun’. Lifted from her debut record the girlhouse ep, which is set for release on 14th May, the track reflects on a traumatic time in girlhouse aka Lauren Luiz’s life, but it rings out with an earnest charm.

“This song is about the moment when I recognized I inherited bad behavior and wanted to take control of my future,” Luiz explains. “It’s about inherited trauma and the bummer of becoming everything you said you never would. I feel like forgiving people from your past for abuse or neglect that happened to you when you were young and vulnerable is SO important to start forgiving yourself.” By contrasting the track’s tough context with her catchy riffs and tentative vocal delivery, Luiz sheds new light on a taboo subject in an accessible and refreshing way.

“This new EP follows my story of landing in LA and finding out exactly how ignorant I was to the real world,” Luiz continues. “Whether that be relationships, men in general, career, sex, friendships, or battling mental illness and dealing with trauma, it all felt new to me.” Pushing forward with her simultaneously modest and confident new outlook, Luiz’s intuitive indie-pop tunes provide a sweet moment of respite from the harsher elements of life.
