Track Of The Day: Kynsy – ‘Happiness Isn’t A Fixed State’

Through jagged guitar riffs and succinct lyricism, Dublin-based artist Kynsy offers a fresh perspective on a breakup on latest single ‘Happiness Isn’t A Fixed State’. Balancing a painful reality with a buoyant optimism, the multi-instrumentalist navigates the push and pull between the head and heart, post-relationship.

“It’s about accepting the fact that sometimes you have to laugh the pain away, or look at negativity head on in order to feel positive emotions and have positive thoughts again,” explains Kynsy (aka Ciara Lindsey). “It’s a tug of war between the positive and negative thought processes that occur when a relationship ends.” Kynsy tackled writing and co-production duties head on with this single, enlisting the help of mixer Claudius Mittendorfer (Interpol, Sorry, Parquet Courts) to add a sheen to her edgy sound.

The track is also accompanied by a self-directed video, shot in Dublin by Tim Shearwood featuring Kynsy and her friends. “[The visuals] needed to be fun and playful but with moments of emotional vulnerability in there too,” Kynsy explains. “A sort of ying and yang of simple fun against complex emotions.”

Track Of The Day: deep tan – ‘deepfake’

With acclaim from the likes of The Quietus, Wonderland and BBC 6Music already under their belts, Hackney based trio deep tan have previously lured us in with last year’s immersive debut ‘Air’. Now, with new single ‘Deep Fake’, they’re set to get our hearts racing once again.

With sonic inspiration from the cold-wave side of post-punk, ‘deepfake’ reflects on the strange internet phenomenon, and the worryingly sexist ways it is used in society. Oozing an eerily captivating splendour, pounding bass-lines underscore the twinkling twang of hypnotic hooks as the illustrious, swooning vocals flow. A swirling, alluring soundscape exuding a unique, dark majesty that’ll bewitch the ears on first listen. Of the track, the band explain:

“The song is a comment on consent. When deepfakes first emerged, they were considered a real political threat. However, they’re mainly used to degrade women. A report by Deeptrace Labs found that 96% of deepfakes online involve simulating porn of female celebrities (without their consent). This song is a comment on this strange internet subculture.”

Track Of The Day: Twist Helix -‘Vultures’

In a pulsing electro anthem, Newcastle-based Twist Helix make a smashing statement with their third single ‘Vultures’. With eager anticipation of their second studio album Machinery set to come out in November, Twist Helix deliver their listeners an undeniable tease of what catchiness is soon to come with their fall release.

Silky, chorus-like synths are the breath of ‘Vultures’, as the band lyrically depict some of the complexities and afflictions that stem from our music industry. The band explain: “as an artist you’re in an inherently vulnerable position that makes it very easy to be preyed upon.”

With so many layers to the meaning behind this statement made by the band, it is truly significant that this discussion be had on a creative practice where it is free to be both safe and light, as well as emotive. For Twist Helix, making a song dance worthy and energising is no matter of contention. With a tasteful blend of post pop melodies, relentless electronic beats, and the band’s cathartic lyrical experience, ‘Vultures’ illustrates its best self with sonic elements that are both shiny and shadowed. With a tasteful, experimental and lush execution, Twist Helix have left us with dancing feet and genuine eagerness with this latest offering.

 

Machinery, the upcoming album from Twist Helix, is set for release in November.

Track Of The Day: REYKO – ‘The Game’

An intoxicating blend of quirky electronics and hushed vocals, London-based duo REYKO have shared their latest single ‘The Game’. The track is designed to distract listeners from the current situation and and encourage them to dance their way through the confusion.

Formed of vocalist Soleil and producer Igor, REYKO began making music together for the final project of Igor’s masters degree in music production. Since then, the pair have been busy creating their sultry sounds by mixing numerous styles together, including elements from electro, indie, pop, hip-hop and trap. On ‘The Game’, the pair underscore a playful desire for mental stimulation with subtle dancing beats and simple lyrical refrains.

The track is accompanied by an animated video directed by Aida Berengué. Featuring Soleil, the visuals reflect the need for escapism and fantasy in these unusual times.
