Track Of The Day: Sea Change – ‘Stepping Out’

An electronic exploration of an ambiguous metamorphosis; Norwegian artist Sea Change has shared her latest single ‘Stepping Out’. It’s taken from her new album INSIDE, which is set for release on 15th November.

Through a fusion of disjointed beats and atmospheric synth textures, Sea Change (aka Ellen Sunde) navigates her ideas about transforming into an animal on her new single. The track was written after she relocated to Berlin, and during her many trips to LA, which resulted in the seven tracks that make up her new album.

Following on from 2015’s Breakage LP, new record INSIDE focuses on what happens when Sunde swaps over-thinking for living in the moment. She explains further: “When I made this record I tried to channel the same state of mind I have when I go clubbing – not overthinking everything, like I usually do, but instead embracing my impulses; working intuitively, almost anti-intellectual. I learned that that’s where I am able to get to the core of what I need to express and that I just had to trust those decisions”.

Track Of The Day: Ski Lift – ‘Comfortable Here’

London’s Ski Lift herald their arrival to our ears with their debut single ‘Comfortable Here’. Comprised of Benji Tranter, Anna Vincent (Heavy Heart) and Jovis Lane (Show Boy), Ski Lift’s debut release offers an angst-driven diatribe railing against the perceived mundanity of adulthood, while simultaneously surrendering to it.

Propelled by jangly hooks and a whirring energy, ‘Comfortable Here’ oozes shades of early noughties emo rock, whilst bringing its own decidedly 2019 poignance, voicing a sentiment that no doubt many 20-somethings will be able to relate to – “Maybe I’m in a rut, but it’s comfortable here…”. With the distinctive, crystalline emotion of Tranter’s vocals alongside the twinkling harmonies of Anna Vincent, it’s an utterly infectious alt-pop anthem for our times; filled with the frustration of the futility of life, yet offering a shining glimmer of optimism.

WATCH: The Big Moon – ‘Your Light’

The Big Moon prove they’re as talented on two wheels as they are on two feet in their video for latest track ‘Your Light’. The song is taken from their upcoming sophomore album Walking Like We Do, which is set for release on 10th January 2020 via Fiction Records.

With its catchy chorus, buoyant melodies and feel-good lyrics; ‘Your Light’ is the perfect boost for anyone who’s feeling blue about the current state of affairs. The band performed their synchronized cycling in the video in the Essex countryside, and they look at ease singing along to their brand new tune.

Speaking about the track, vocalist and songwriter Juliette Jackson explains: “This song is about freeing yourself from all of it, just for a moment. It’s a thanks to the one person or thing in your life that knows how to come in and open your curtains and light up the darkness and restore your strength so that when you clatter back down into the real world you have the strength to fight your battles, whatever they are.”

Track Of The Day: Shari Vari – ‘New York City’

Brooding electronics and moody vocals fuse together on Shari Vari‘s new single ‘New York’, capturing the atmosphere of one of America’s most iconic cities. The track is taken from their new album NOW, recently released via cult label Malka Tuti.

Formed of of Helena Ratka and Sophia Kennedy, the Hamburg-based alt-electronic duo blend elements of performance art, techno, house, pop and jazz to create their dense electronic beats. Speaking about their upcoming album, the band explain:

“Time is ticking and the questions we have regarding time and action is the connecting element of the songs and tracks on NOW. There is mostly a dark connotation in [the] music and lyrics, but not without a joyful outlook, fun twists and a breeze of irony. NOW connects the individual with the social persona, while the tracks take you on a trip from the boiler room next to our studio to a chilly sunday in the park. It’s more a stream of consciousness than a conceptual decision we made”.
