Track Of The Day: Sandunes – ‘Eleven Eleven’ feat. Landslands

A unique musicality informed by jazz, spirituality, experimental folk and electronic music; Sandunes has shared her new single ‘Eleven Eleven’ featuring Landslands. The track is taken from her new EP of the same name, which is set for release on 6th September via !K7.

Sandunes (aka Sanaya Aredeshir) recorded her 11:11 EP whilst travelling between between Mumbai, London and Berlin. She blends these three different cultures seamlessly in to one seductive, electronic listening experience. Her respect for the works of Philip Glass, Andrew Ashong, Anoushka Shankarthe, and the experimental music of Sudan Archives have merged in to a homage to what she calls the “diverse spiritualists” that surround her.

As well as creating her own music, Sandunes actively encourages other musicians in Mumbai where she’s based. She is a member of DASTA – a community collective of six beatmakers at the forefront of India’s electronic music scene, and runs courses for young producers and artists committed to exposing, promoting and exporting the music. In 2017, Sandunes also worked with the Barbican as part of their “Different Trains 1947 project”, a collaborative response by artists including Actress and Darkstar, responding to the 70th anniversary of the declaration of India’s independence.

Sandunes will be returning to the UK to headline The Pickle Factory in East London on the 12th September, to coincide with the release of her new EP. Listen to her mesmerising new single below, and follow Sandunes on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: ARXX – ‘You Got What You Want’

“Unapologetically loud” Brighton duo Hannah Pidduck and Clara Townsend are GIHE faves ARXX. With ‘You Got What You Want’, they deliver an empowering, raging anthem that fuses pure, primal rock ‘n’ roll with a bouncy, pop sensibility.

‘You Got What You Want’ starts with sparse, grungey guitars and quickly builds to a big chorus that’ll get your toes tappin’ and your fists pumping. It feels like a battle cry; a ‘fuck you’ to hopelessness.

It’s a great showcase for Pidduck’s fabulous voice, which effortlessly veers from a rich, throaty growl to full on power-pop. If she were singing for her supper, she’d definitely be bringing home a chippy tea!

While there might only be two of ARXX, ‘You Got What You Want’ proves that they can make a big noise and a massive impact.

‘You Got What You Want’ is out now. Catch ARXX live across the UK throughout September and October, all details here.

Track Of The Day: Danika Smith – ‘Suit Of Armour’

Smooth vocals, lo-fi percussion and beguiling guitar sounds permeate Melbourne-based artist Danika Smith‘s debut single ‘Suit Of Armour’. Her blend of folk and soul elements captivate the ears, and prove that Danika has an instinctive approach when it comes to songwriting.

Speaking about the track, she explains: “I wrote ‘Suit Of Armour’ when love and fear collided, and left me feeling confused and avoidant. It’s a song that observes the reservations I have, when there is something potentially beautiful in front of me, and I look for the cracks and flaws, as a protective method to avoid pain. It is melancholic that the beauty of love is shadowed by so much skepticism and mistrust, but there is an optimistic message too. I have the power to move through the weight of these experiences, remove the armour, and eventually be more open to connection, in time.”

Danika’s careful removal of her emotional chains is a humble, inspiring act that demonstrates both her vulnerability and her strength as a woman, and as a musician. She’s currently working on her debut LP and gigging around Australia, and we’re keen to hear more of her Lifted from her beautifully crafted sounds.
