LISTEN: Shitkid – ‘Detention’

A grungy, gleeful take-down of a juvenile punishment; Shitkid have shared their latest track ‘Detention’. The single is the title track from the “anti-pop star’s” upcoming record (due out in May) and it’s just as catchy as their previous release ‘Summer Break’.

Originally the solo project of Åsa Söderqvist in 2015, Shitkid has now become a two piece; with new bandmate Lina Molarin Ericsson performing with Söderqvist under her mischevious moniker. Their new album [DETENTION] was recorded at Stockholm’s Country Girl Studios with producer Lovina Isaksson, and cut almost entirely live by an expanded lineup including Söderqvist, Ericsson, guitarist Arvid Sjöö and drummer Josefin Ahlqvist Lyzwinski.

Speaking about the upcoming release, Söderqvist explains: “I started listening to the bands that I loved in school again, and I felt inspired by it. It’s a genre that’s quite embarrassing to go back to, and I knew that would make it really fun. I used to be emo in 2008, and now nobody plays that music anymore! There’s nothing about being kids and nobody understanding you. It felt like time to bring it back.”

LISTEN: Lisa Hannigan & s t a r g a z e Orchestra – ‘Bookmark’

Cinematic sounds and affecting vocals combine on Irish songwriter Lisa Hannigan‘s latest single ‘Bookmark’. It’s a beautiful collaboration with composer André de Ridder and his s t a r g a z e neo-classical orchestra, recorded when they accompanied Hannigan onstage at Dublin’s National Concert Hall. The live album will be released on 31st May via Play It Again Sam, titled Live In Dublin.

The new record spans Hannigan’s discography, including her critically acclaimed 2016 third album At Swim. It paints a beautiful musical portrait of her 17 year career so far, which has included award nominations from the Mercury Prize to Ireland’s Choice Music Prize and Meteor Music Awards.

Speaking about ‘Bookmark’, Hannigan explains: “’Bookmark’ was one of those lost songs that I wrote for At Swim that didn’t seem to fit with the rest of that record. I also never could figure out how to orchestrate it beyond my guitar part and it felt a bit stuck. Andre wrote an arrangement for it during the PEOPLE festival in Berlin, and overnight it came to life.”

Track Of The Day: ZAMILSKA – ‘Hollow’

Dense, rhythmic, hypnotic beats permeate Polish producer ZAMILSKA‘s new single ‘Hollow’, the first track released from her upcoming album due later this summer. The jagged soundscape combines techno textures and intriguing vocal samples to reflect “the anxiety of what we want vs what we get”.

From Silesia, the coal-mining region of Poland, Natalia Zamilska’s music combines both melodic and industrial elements in a beautiful yet brutal fashion. Her work has attracted the attention of Nine Inch Nails, who recommended one of her tracks on their official Spotify playlist and recently she stepped into the gaming world and contributed to RUINER (Digital Dragon Award 2018 winner Best Polish Game Soundtrack), which features her music heavily throughout.

ZAMILSKA has also garnered acclaim from Radio BBC 6 Music’s Iggy Pop, Mary Anne Hobbs and Tom Ravenscroft, and with her superb remix of Gazelle Twin’s ‘Belly of the Beast’ which was played on the ABC series How To Get Away With Murder.

With her ability to create beats that ricochet around our skulls and her obvious talent for collaborating, we’re biting our nails in anticipation of ZAMILSKA’s upcoming record. Listen to ‘Hollow’ below and follow ZAMILSKA on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: The Astronots – ‘Settle Down’

‘Settle Down’ is the next release from LA rock trio, The Astronots, which succeeds their 2018 single, ‘How Much Pain’.

Kicking off with a hair-raising, spine-tingling sense of urgency, a floor tom thumps ominously and a bass rumbles, as together they sound like an army marching in unison, before a discordant guitar wavers in with menacing graveyard charm.

Spearhead of the West Coast group, Allee Futterer, graces the track with her feather soft, ghostly vocals. Her voice drifts weightlessly, yet is grounded by the droning bass and tremolo guitar; then, as the sinister guitar riff returns, plunging us into the chorus, an electrifying space of heavenly vocals laced with fizzy synth, pounded by fierce guitar, fills your ears. Meandering between Earth and the cosmic realms, the track becomes a force to be reckoned with, experimenting with ethereal buzzes and muffled radio commentary, all the while rooted by wailing guitar.
