LIVE (Photos): Siobhan Wilson @ The Eagle Inn, Salford, 15.04.18

Last night GIHE caught up with Siobhan Wilson at the Eagle Inn in Salford. Playing a stripped back set that induced pin drop attention, interrupted by Siobhan’s own outbreaks of laughter – not least when she introduced her cover of ‘Anarchy In The UK’, which started as a bit of a joke inclusion on a list of “what songs would you like Siobhan to cover” at a gig, but one that she totally owned.

Siobhan is Scottish based, but has also lived and recorded in France. She won Green Man Rising last year and is currently on a UK headline tour and about to head out again, this time in support of Aidan Moffat and RM Hubbert.

Siobhan Wilson’s new album, There Are No Saints, is out now.

**TRIGGER WARNING: DISCUSSION OF RAPE & SEXUAL ASSAULT**

Swedish electronic artist Jenny Wilson has managed to create something poignant and powerful out of her own harrowing experience of sexual assault on her latest single, ‘Rapin*’. The track is taken from her forthcoming album Exorcism, due on April 20th, and it’s an intensely personal, unflinching look at life after trauma.

Having previously collaborated with contemporaries including Robyn and The Knife (to whose Rabid Records she was previously signed), Exorcism will be Wilson’s fifth studio album, and her first since 2013’s Demand The Impossible!

The animated video for Exorcism‘s lead single ’Rapin*’, directed by Gustaf Holtenäs, debuted at the Gothenburg Film Festival, and it’s a stunning but painful set of visuals. Speaking about the film, Jenny explains: “I wanted to make something awfully direct. Something you just can’t hide from or misunderstand. This song demanded a brutal video, and it had to be done in a beautiful animated style to reach the full power of the story.”

We’re moved by Jenny’s strength and bravery in the face of adversity and admire her ability to create positive, thought-provoking art.

WATCH: Petrol Girls – ‘Survivor’

Inspired by the growing movement against sexual violence, PETROL GIRLS have shared their riotous new single ‘Survivor’. It’s another much-needed anthem from a band who are dedicated to shouting back against the damage of patriarchal oppression.

Produced by the band’s vocalist Ren Aldridge, the accompanying video for ‘Survivor’ is a collaboration between Andrew Northrop and painter Mariah Pearl. Ren explains: “The way that Mariah’s paintings play with the surface of the canvas gives me a really strong feeling of a clandestine power that refuses to be captured or identified. For me, this reflects whisper networks and the erupting movement against sexual violence. It’s like the tree roots that push up through the tarmac.”

Ren and her band mates’ passion for social justice has led to PETROL GIRLS being signed to UK-based independent label Hassle Records, and the band will head off on tour this month to share new track ‘Survivor’ with their fans.

Track Of The Day: Tess Roby – ‘Catalyst’

Taken from her debut album Beacon, Montreal artist Tess Roby has recently shared her dreamy new single ‘Catalyst’.

Flowing with Roby’s sweeping rich vocals and whirring hooks, ‘Catalyst’ oozes a cinematic grace and subtle emotive power. As twinkling, ethereal soundscapes evoke rich pastoral imagery, it’s a truly majestic and stirring slice of classically inspired alt-pop.

Written shortly after the death of her father, and inspired by her childhood memories of Lancashire, Beacon is out 4th May via Italians Do It Better.
