Track Of The Day: BABii – ‘Seiizure’

Emerging Margate-based artist BABii has shared her new single ‘Seiizure’, taken from her debut LP HiiDE, which is set for release later this year via Deathwaltz Originals. It’s a lo-fi fusion of atmospheric synths, snappy percussion and cutting-but-cute vocals.

Speaking about the new track, BABii explains: “I nearly put this song in the bin, but Iglooghost heard a small clip from it when I used to post parts of songs on my Instagram and encouraged me to finish it. Now it’s one of my favourite songs on the record”. Encouraged by her collaborators and fans – including umru, Kai Whiston and Abi Wade – BABii has been cutting and pasting snippets of her songs and sharing them online for a while. Now, she’s ready to step in to the spotlight, and if ‘Seiizure is anything to go by, it’s going to be a bright one.

LISTEN: BABii – ‘Phantom’

Don’t be fooled by the name of youthful newcomer BABii; she’s a fully-fledged producer, songwriter and performer who crafts her own electro-pop beats and her new single ‘Phantom’ showcases her ability to do so.

Taken from her debut LP HiiDE, which is set for release in 2019 via Deathwaltz Originals, ‘Phantom’ is one of many tracks which  “focuses on the key themes of hiding and secrets”. BABii’s upbeat synths and gentle vocals mask the vulnerability in the lyrics to ‘Phantom’, making it a playful and easy listening experience.

With her upcoming tour dates supporting Miho Hatouri (listed below) and after receiving support from Iglooghost’s Diplo & Friends mix for BBC Radio 1, one thing’s for sure: it’ll be hard for BABii to hide from an exciting new career in electronic pop music. Listen to ‘Phantom’ below and follow BABii on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: Abi Wade – ‘A Bit Like Love’

Orchestral soundscapes personalise Abi Wade’s new single ‘A Bit Like Love’

The ornate piano and soulful strings that characterise the track are emotional, personable, and human. On the single, Abi sings of lost relationships, her stark, sharp vocal marrying with the flurried piano notes of the chorus. The focal lyric “It doesn’t feel a bit like love to me” weaves in and out of the ethereal strings, sounding closer to a tragic arthouse film soundtrack than a pop song. It’s this, though, that makes the track stand out.

Written almost entirely on the cello, Abi’s musically rousing approach to writing songs is conveyed through her delicate yet powerful layered soundscapes. With vocals likened to Kate Bush, ‘A Bit Like Love’ is stylistically timeless.

The single is the newest release from album Beautifully Astray. The record is a unique exploration of relationships, with its finger directly on the pulse of melancholy yet brilliant music.

Beautifully Astray, the upcoming new album from Abi Wade, is out 6 April.
