WATCH: CIEL – ‘The Shore’ (Live Session)

To celebrate the physical release of their debut EP Movement on 7″ vinyl, Brighton-based CIEL have shared a live video of their single ‘The Shore’. Released via Manchester label Box Bedroom Rebels, the alt-pop band have included a bonus track on the EP titled ‘Wasn’t Enough For Me’, written and recorded by the band while in isolation.

Formed of Dutch musician Michelle Hindriks and the friends she made when she relocated to Brighton, CIEL enlisted the help of Producer Jack Wolter (Penelope Isles) to help them create the atmospheric sounds on their debut EP. Lead single ‘The Shore’ is a dreamy rumination about seizing the moment and not letting life pass you by, with Hindriks’ pensive vocals floating above beguiling guitars, snappy beats and blissed out synths, reflecting the waves of thought she sings about.

The Movement EP comes in a double sided sleeve, one of six different designs, with a gate-fold insert, one of ten numbered Polaroid photos, a CIEL postcard, sticker set, personalised confetti and a small signed A5 poster. You can order your copy here.

VIDEO PREMIERE: BLAB – ‘R.I.P’

A savage combination of wicked guitar riffs, sardonic vocals and witty lyrics, Essex-based artist BLAB has shared her debut single ‘R.I.P’. Released today (3rd July) via Cool Thing Records, the track is a cathartic expression of personal frustration designed to help listeners move past their lingering resentments.

“Being able to express anger in an unfiltered way can be super super healthy, as long as you’re not hurting others” explains Frances Murray – aka BLAB. ON ‘R.I.P’ she playfully rips through her unresolved anguish, turning it into an indie-pop, punk-infused anthem. “To me, it feels like a reclamation of power to be able to freely express my anger from that time in my life. It’s such a bold statement that it had to be the first single; it’s like opening a can of worms and a firework coming at you instead!”

The accompanying video for ‘R.I.P’ was shot by Murray during isolation and playfully reflects both the frustrations explored in the track, and the restrictions the lockdown has imposed on artists. BLAB won’t be held back by these things though, and ‘R.I.P’ is a hectic debut from this emerging new talent.

Track Of The Day: Amaroun – ‘Scarlet’

Following the poignant power of ‘Rise’ and following acclaim from the likes of BBC 6Music and BBC Introducing, GIHE fave Jay Brown – aka Amaroun – has now shared the latest in a string of singles that she’s releasing each month of 2020.

With each single so far touching on a different theme surrounding life as a queer woman, ‘Scarlet’ is a love song, reflecting on Jay’s “obsession” with  red-heads and the story of how her and her partner met. Oozing a gentle romanticism and subtle playful wit, it’s propelled by immense pounding beats and uptempo glitchy hooks as Amaroun switches between soulful refrains and fast-paced spoken-word lyricism. With a sunny, danceable groove and glistening energy, ‘Scarlet’ reflects Amaroun’s ability to tackle any genre and make it truly her own. An instantly uplifting slice of alt-pop, its luscious scintillating vibes will have you hooked on first listen.

Listen to ‘Scarlet’ now and keep your ears peeled for further releases from Amaroun throughout the rest of the year!
