Track Of The Day: LIERS – ‘Universal Female’

A torrent of alternative sound designed to shake your ear drums and get your feet stomping, Dublin-based LIERS have shared their debut single ‘Universal Female’. Formed of vocalist Liz Seaver, Ed Scanlan (Lead guitarist), Stephen Farrell (Bassist) and Ronan O’Hanlon (Drummer), LIERS are inspired by the sound of 90’s bands like Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins and PJ Harvey.

The band will be celebrating the release of their debut single by joining Sub Motion to open for post-grunge rockers Fangclub at Whelan’s in Dublin on Thursday April 26th. With the support of Polite Society (Fangclub, Long Tail, Vulpynes) and an EP release lined up on Headwire Records later this year, 2018 is set to be a big year for LIERS.

Track Of The Day: Mesadorm – ‘Yours And Not Yours’

An urgent exploration of insecurity and doubt, London-based collaborative project Mesadorm have shared their latest single ‘Yours and Not Yours’. Released via Babylegs Records earlier this month, the track is taken from the band’s upcoming album Heterogaster, which will be released in Spring 2018.

Formed in 2015 by a group of long term friends, Mesadorm are a combination of each band member’s musical and artistic influences. Every individual is a performer in their own right, having written and/or recorded with such artists as Goldfrapp, MIKA, Paloma Faith, Rae Morris, The Magnetic North, John Metcalfe, The Unthanks, Hannah Peel and Frank Turner.

‘Yours and Not Yours’ is an amalgamation of each band member’s talent, collectively exploring an intense sense of doubt, ricocheting between security and unease with the help of an abrasive synth line and urgent, rich vocals.

“’YANY’ is a purging song for me,” vocalist & songwriter Blythe Pepino explains about the track.”It has something of the moment when self-doubt and doubt in everything around us collides. A special kind of doubt I think us ‘beneficiaries’ of the Western Capitalist model are now experiencing. The kind where, perhaps at a certain destabilising point in your life, the kind faces of friends and family and lovers melt into the smiles of the adverts forced upon you for addictive crap you don’t need. It has something of the taste of looking for home when everything you’ve been grown to enjoy carries the smell of burnt flesh and deceit. After that you must learn to look for what joy really is to you because the potential to fill yourself up with the other stuff is very real and very easy and all the while someone else is dying for your comfort on the TV screen.”

EP: After London – ‘After London’

If you’re looking for a slice of anthemic, alternative indie-rock, look no further than After London. The five-piece have released their eponymous debut EP, and it’s a record that shows they’re well-rehearsed, wickedly talented and ready for bigger things.

‘Bitter Man’ kicks things off with sardonic yet sublime vocals that recollect a blur of sexist poison and disappointment. Following track ‘Dreams’ flickers with the energy of over-active pupils during a case of REM sleep, and fans of London-rockers Anteros will approve of this indie tune.

On the penultimate ‘Highlife’, vocalist Francesca sings “you don’t like the taste of my despair” – but it’s hard to imagine anyone not savouring the sweet qualities of her voice, even if they do lament the sourness of dejection. The opening lyric on final track ‘Waiting For You’ feels particularly poignant – “Silence says more than what you think / it colours things that you can’t see” – and paves the way for an anthemic four minutes of taut percussion and melodic guitars.

EP: Drahla – ‘Third Article’

Fans of Sonic Youth and all things alternative to should invest in the debut EP from Leeds three-piece Drahla. The band have released ‘Third Article’ (Produced by Hookworms’ MJ) through their own label Blank Ad; and it’s a sterling cacophony of noise-rock sounds that’ll have you trapped in a 90s alt-nostalgia spiral.

The fast-paced ‘Form Of Luxury’ opens the EP with its restless percussion and jaded vocals, and you’ll “form a line” in preparation for the track’s breakdown which boasts manic riffs and hefty bass. On second track ‘Silk Spirit’, Luciel Brown’s voice sits comfortably above the delightful drone whilst she sings of “walking in the desert” in Kim Gordon-esque style, as reverb and feedback simultaneously clash and combine to make this the stand-out track on the EP.

The penultimate ‘Circuit’ is a brief spiral of noise that leads in to aggressive closing track ‘New Living Creation’. It’s the perfect conclusion to this short but satisfying series of impressive strung-out sounds. ‘The Third Article’ is available to stream via Spotify or Apple Music, and available to purchase on vinyl via Bandcamp.
