Track Of The Day: ARXX – ‘Iron Lung’

Following last year’s release of their incredible debut EP Daughters Of Daughters, and wowing crowds supporting the likes of Lady Bird and The Coathangers as well as at Cro Cro Land in April, GIHE faves ARXX have now shared a fantastically ferocious new single.

Wasting no time at all, ‘Iron Lung’ kicks off immediately with vocalist/guitarist Hannah blasting into our ears with her distinctive, penetrating growl: “Give me the iron lung”, she demands, as we’re instantly, once again, completely blown away by the Brighton duo’s unmatched raw power.

Showcasing all that we love about them, with ‘Iron Lung’ ARXX deliver their immense, ferocious sound to full effect. Driven by Hannah’s fierce emotion and Clara’s unrelenting thrashing beats, it rages with scuzzed-out hooks reminiscent of the catchy rock anthems of (personal heroes) Foo Fighters.

Despite the comparison, however (and it is a compliment of the highest, coming from me: a fangirl who’s seen Foos 14 times), ARXX truly are completely unique in both sound and energy. Having heard ‘Iron Lung’ live the last couple of times I’ve seen them, it’s wonderful to hear it recorded; capturing the raucous force of their live shows perfectly.

Without meaning to sound like a broken record, I really cannot stress strongly enough how incredible I think ARXX are. They stand out amongst a sea of new bands as a constant breath of fresh air; a mighty force to be reckoned with whose consistent dedication and energy to all they do is to be admired. They’re my most favourite power duo, deserving of every success that comes their way, and I cannot wait to see where their anthem-filled journey takes them next.

‘Iron Lung’ is out 7th June. Catch ARXX live:

10th August – Boardmasters Festival, Newquay
14th September – The Dome, Tufnell Park (Loud Women Fest)

WATCH: ARXX – ‘Moments At A Time’

As any regular follower of Get In Her Ears will be aware, we’re huge fans of Brighton duo ARXX. They’ve wowed us on numerous occasions (including at our recent International Women’s Day gig at The Finsbury) with their utterly, ferociously, breathtaking live performance, and blasted into ears nationwide with their debut EP Daughters Of Daughters last year.

Now they’ve shared a brand new video to the EP’s opening track, ‘Moments At A Time’. Capturing the immense, thrashing energy of the duo’s live shows, it showcases their phenomenal, sparkling force perfectly. As the fierce passion of Hannah’s raw, impassioned vocals blast out against frenzied riffs and Clara’s spectacularly pummelling beats, their seething, punk-infused power is juxtaposed with some beautiful, flowing contemporary dance.

Refreshingly channelling some much-needed female aggression (“I don’t really need you, I’m just taking what I can get…”), ‘Moments At A Time’ once again proves ARXX’s truly magnificent command of all they do, cementing them as one of the most incredible bands I’ve ever come across; truly deserving of every success.

Track Of The Day: Gulls – ‘Shop’

Brighton trio Gulls take on consumerism and gentrification in new “#punkrockemopop” banger. ‘Shop’ uses heavy guitar riffs and loudly spoken words to battle gentrification of their hometown Brighton and the way that consumerism by the general public helps it to move.

Rhi Kavok, self-titled “punk-poet”, uses her lyrics to express her distaste for high-end brands and upset about community assets being shut down perfectly in this track.

The punk movement, especially in the last few years, has lost what it used to really be about; fighting the regime and pissing off the government. But now Gulls make sure that they focus on what’s really important to them and scream it from the rooftops.

‘Shop’ is a punk banger with those heavy riffs and drum lines accentuating the vocals; no matter where you are in the UK, you’ll be able to absolutely relate to its poignant message.

Track Of The Day: Something Leather – ‘Sip The Thrill’

A cynical psych-tinged commentary about how we try to simultaneously stall and speed up time; Brighton trio Something Leather have shared their latest single ‘Sip The Thrill’. Their sharp percussion, dark guitar noises and striking use of their vintage Philips organ gives their skepticism an intensely appealing sound.

Released on purple 7” vinyl via We Can Do It Records, this is the third single the band have shared following ‘Shotgun Persona’ and ‘Disappear On Me’. They’ve managed to secure impressive support slots with Black Midi, Phobophobes, Madonnatron, Saint Agnes and JOHN, and they’re slowly building up a reputation as one of the most vibrant and distinctive live bands on the scene. Their beloved 70’s Philips organ is fixed up with old parts of frontwoman Phillie’s grandmother’s first colour TV, giving them an authentic sound with real character.

Speaking about ‘Sip The Thrill’ the band explain: “[It’s] a song about the contradictory way in which we try to live forever without enjoying the process, dedicating so much of our time denying the inevitable. From the stop-start attack of the drums and guitar, to the driving energy of the organ and frenetic ending, juxtaposed with the dark nature of the lyrics, it’s a cynical song about chasing time.”
