Track Of The Day: Grandmas House – ‘Always Happy’

A thumping post-punk anthem that seethes with sardonic wit, Bristol-based trio Grandmas House have shared their latest single ‘Always Happy’. Released via Brace Yourself Records, the track is a raucous juxtaposition of the confident image we project externally to others, when internally we often feel the complete opposite.

Formed of Yasmin Berndt (vocals, guitar), Poppy Dodgson (vocals, drums) and Zoë Zinsmeister (bass), Grandmas House combine gritty guitars, powerhouse percussion and visceral vocals to create their corrosive, commanding sounds. Formed in late 2018, the band were busy cutting their teeth on the UK gig circuit before Covid-19 put an abrupt stop to live music. The trio decided to use their time in lockdown constructively, quickly writing and recording new material, including their new single ‘Always Happy’.

“The song is wrapped in sarcasm based on our experiences of being perceived as a certain person, particularly on stage where we are overconfident, exaggerated versions of ourselves,” the band explain. “[It’s] a song we wrote about the social anxiety we all experience in some way or another, particularly concerning social media which gives the chance to easily convey a polished, perfect life which is often misleading – it’s not daily life, but snippets of the best parts. It was one of those songs that just came together so quickly as we were all completely on the same wavelength concerning the meaning of it.”

Through Berndt’s raspy, sarcastic vocals, Zinsmeister’s smouldering bass lines and Dodgson’s distinctive drum strikes, the trio smash through the false perceptions that happiness or contentment are permanent states of being. This welcome dose of cynicism will be accompanied by another equally infectious track ‘Small Talk’ on the band’s upcoming cassette release on 12th March.

Track Of The Day: Beefywink – ‘Holocene Heroine’

Set to release their new album later this month, Bristol queer punks Beefywink have shared their ferocious latest single.

Propelled by swirling hooks and a gritty energy, ‘Holocene Heroine’ is a poetically disguised feminist anthem, honouring the women of our time. Showcasing the impassioned, seething vocals of AZ, an eerie tension builds with frenzied riffs, resulting in a raging outburst of emotion. A riotous punk anthem for our times, oozing a stirring poignancy and angst that resonates now more strongly than ever.

‘Holocene Heroine’ is taken from Beefywink’s upcoming album Dance In The Deluge, set for release 23rd October.

LISTEN: Fräulein – ‘Mary’

Having been obsessing over Bristol duo Fräulein‘s last single ‘Drag Behind’ for the last few weeks, I was excited to hear that they have an epic new release.

Whereas ‘Drag Behind’ was focused lyrically on feeling out of place, new track ‘Mary’ is about faith, trust and power. Oozing a raw, grunge-infused sound and gritty energy, with shades of early Nirvana, the whirring twang of its stripped back riffs and sparse beats combine to create a swirling eerie aura, building to showcase the unique visceral growl of vocalist Joni.

I cannot recommend these two strongly enough and will continue to bang on about them with every new release – I really think they have something wonderfully nostalgic, yet ultimately unique, to offer. And, as soon as it is safe to do so, I cannot wait for them to blow us away live at one of our gig nights!

LISTEN: Nasty Little Lonely – ‘Glitter’

Industrial and sinister post-punk sounds collide in gritty yet sparkling style on Nasty Little Lonely‘s latest track ‘Glitter’. Hailing from the Bristol scene that recently spat Idles into the music world’s consciousness, the trio are inspired by the likes of MX-80 and have shared stages with The Wytches, Idles, Part Chimp, God Damn, Bo Ningen and Lydia Lunch.

Despite it’s glamorous namesake, ‘Glitter’ is a track drenched in introspection and anxiety, examining the mental strains of being a performer. It recounts the moments of exhilaration on stage that often come at the cost of a great deal of stress, and abrasively explores whether the highs would be as powerful without the lows.

The band are following the single release with a run of shows, performing alongside Evil Blizzard and at Wrong Festival. Check out the gig dates below and follow Nasty Little Lonely on Facebook for more updates.
