LISTEN: girlhouse – ‘happy now’

Showcasing a new emotional maturity to her song-writing, Portland-born Nashville-based musician girlhouse has shared her latest single ‘happy now’. Whilst the track starts out deceptively dreamy, lyrically there’s no mistaking how girlhouse aka Lauren Luiz feels – especially in the biting lines “your promises stink like gasoline” and “are you f****g happy now?”

Listeners could be fooled into thinking this song is about lost love, but Luiz is actually pleading with herself on this new release. “’happy now’ started as an angry poem towards someone in my life that was really emotionally challenging to me,” she explains. “As we started producing it and I started looking at the lyrics from a different perspective, I realized I was projecting everything I hated about myself towards this other person. ‘happy now’ is my heart, gladiator screaming ‘are you not entertained?!’ to my body after doing all the things and following all the people that should, in theory, make me happy but in the end left me feeling empty.”

Through her grunge laden guitar and melodic voice, Luiz vents her frustration throughout the track, arriving at a place of acceptance and growth.

LISTEN: GIHE on Soho Radio with Fears 28.07.21

Tash, Kate & Mari were back on the NYC & Culture channel on Soho Radio‘s airwaves for their third GIHE show! They played a mix of golden oldies – including a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse – and new music tunes from some of their favourite women, non-binary and LGBTQ+ artists.

Irish musician & Tulle Collective co-founder Fears aka Constance Keane also joined them to talk about the reaction to her beautiful debut album Oíche, her upcoming gig plans, and how watching Love Island and Mary Kate & Ashley’s 2002 rom-com When In Rome have helped her through periods of lockdown & Covid-induced isolation.

Track Of The Day: Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra – ‘I Didn’t Love You When I Said I Did and I Don’t Now’

Equal parts charming and cutting, Dublin-based trio Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra‘s latest single ‘I Didn’t Love You When I Said I Did and I Don’t Now’ is a swirling lament to the moment when you realise a relationship is ultimately beyond saving. Released via Anon Records and recommended to us by fellow Irish musician Fears, the band blend shimmering guitars, urgent vocals and poignant lyricism to reflect the frustrations and uncertainties that come with this unwanted epiphany.

Formed of Sarah Deegan (songwriter/guitarist), Alice Grollero (bassist) and Danni Nolan (drummer), Pixie Cut Rhythm Orchestra met via Dublin’s underground & DIY music scenes and began writing music together inspired by the sounds of Mitski, Courtney Barnett and Angel Olsen. The band deliver their observations on life with a raw sincerity, with Deegan’s distinctive voice leading the charge on ‘I Didn’t Love You When I Said I Did and I Don’t Now’.

The track is accompanied by a video, shot and edited by artist Hollie Gilson, reflecting the irritation, resentment and reluctance that follows the point of no return after a breakup. To take the edge off, they’ve also shared some fun ‘Behind The Scenes’ footage that you can watch here too.

VIDEO PREMIERE: The Pearl Harts – ‘Suck It Up’ (Live At Anchorbaby Studios)

A classic rock and roll anthem full of pounding drums, commanding vocals and raucous guitar licks, London-based duo The Pearl Harts have shared an exclusive live video of their track ‘Suck It Up’. Recorded in the summer of 2020 and filmed at Anchor Baby Studios in Kent, the band teamed up with producer Dan Lucas and videographer Sean Hardy to make the slick new visuals, which reflect the power and charisma of the duo’s live performance.

The Pearl Harts – like many bands – were hit hard when the covid-19 pandemic put a stop to touring in March 2020. The duo used their time in the subsequent lockdowns to remotely write & record material for a new album, and once restrictions were lifted they began performing a series of socially distanced gigs, including a drive-in show with VC London, the UK’s only all-female motorcycle crew.

Now, the pair are busy preparing for an interactive online gig with Blacksanta at The Fiddlers Elbow on Thursday 20th May. Whilst audiences are still not permitted inside, they’ll be able to experience the band’s set live from their own home, with the ability to be seen and heard by them in the venue. Fans can also join friends in groups, video chat in the virtual bar and continue to text chat whilst the performance unfolds. Tickets are available here.
