Track Of The Day: Hussy – ‘I Tried’

A swirling guitar tune about self-assertion and facing adversity head on, Sophie Nicole Ellison aka Hussy has shared her latest single ‘I Tried’. Describing her style as “DIY with high ambitions,” the South London-based songwriter & producer performed drums, guitars, synth and bass entirely by herself on this track, which is lifted from her debut EP due later this year.

“I feel like people will instantly think this is a love song but it’s actually not,” Ellison explains about the single. “This song is more me standing up for myself and who I am and maintaining that through adversity. I wrote this pretty instantaneously in the moment, so it definitely has a dramatic ‘take it or leave it’ sentiment whilst landing on an acceptance over it.”

With her talent as a multi-instrumentalist and knowledge as a producer and professional sound engineer, Ellison has an incredibly self-sufficient approach to creating music under her Hussy moniker, which she adopted from a T-shirt slogan. On ‘I Tried’, her guitar sounds are polished, her vocal delivery is charming and the effortless way that she blends these two elements reflects the skill, confidence and resilience it must have took to self-record & produce her upcoming EP.

Track Of The Day: Hussy – ‘Forever’

Following previous singles ‘Slayer’ and ‘Playtime’, South East London based Sophie Nicole Ellison – aka Hussy – has now shared a bewitching new single, ‘Forever’

Playing, recording and layering all the music herself, Hussy showcases her innovative songwriting abilities. Starting off with a somewhat eerie tone, twinkling chimes cascade into scuzzy hooks with a gritty energy before being interspersed with a luscious, dreamy haze. Flowing with the celestial power of Ellison’s vocals, a soaring, textured soundscape is created, whirring with a haunting intensity. With ‘Forever’, Hussy offers a perfect, shimmering slice of psych-filled, shoegaze-heavy Dream Pop, complete with immersive layers and captivating majestic allure.

Of the track, Hussy explains:

“’Forever’ talks about my tendency to delve into escapism. I went through an intense period of lucid dreaming where I would meet people through these dreams; people I had met briefly or had admired, been interested with or even not met at all. I would become friends with these people very intensely and feel like I’d get to know them super well, better than in real life. Then when I would encounter them in real life there was a sense of loss, like something that could/ could’ve been. I guess it harps at longing for connections.”

Featuring Leisha Thomas and Becca Carter on drums and additional guitar, ‘Forever’ is out now.

Track Of The Day: Hussy – ‘Slayer’

Playing, recording and layering all her music herself, South London based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sophie Nicole Ellison – aka Hussy – has now released a brand new single.

Oozing jangly, twinkling melodies and a sparkling effervescent charm, ‘Slayer’ flows with Ellison’s luscious rich vocals and catchy hooks. As swirling layers of sound are interwoven with a gritty emotion-strewn edge and reflective heartfelt lyricism, a euphoric slice of dreamy indie pop is created. Of the track, Ellison explains:

Slayer comes from a place of feeling stuck and willing for something better to
come around, disappearing into your own head… I was feeling frustrated and in a stagnant place, not knowing how to move forward while still burning myself at both ends. A common theme for many twenty somethings of searching for validation through your work. I wanted to
take the listener through the journey of a weird headspace and how you deal with those emotions.”

‘Slayer’ forms half of a double A-side release, along with ‘Playtime‘.
