PREVIEW: QOTSA & Friends @ Finsbury Park, 30.06.18

Anyone who knows me will know of my love of Queens Of The Stone Age. Anyone who knows me will also know of my love of championing women in music. So, although I am EXTREMELY excited about seeing QOTSA and the legendary Iggy Pop next Saturday, 30th June, in Finsbury Park, I’m also particularly looking forward to the rest of the incredible line up, which is 50% female…

Brody Dalle:
I have been wanting to see Brody Dalle since I was a 16 year old listening to The Distillers’ Sing Sing Death House for the first time, and being completely blown away by her seething, riotous power. Catch me at the front re-living my teenage angst.

Deap Vally: 
Blues-rock duo Deap Vally are the band I turn to whenever I need some motivation. Their empowering passion and glorious, gritty aggression when delivering their raging feminist anthems is really an immense spectacle to behold.

Hinds: 
Having seen the Spanish band Hinds three times before, I can assure you they will not disappoint live. Their infectious, sunny charisma never fails to put a smile on my face, and their immense, buoyant energy creates a sweeping sense of raucous euphoria whenever they perform.

Black Honey:
Fronted by Izzy B Phillips, Brighton’s Black Honey have been building quite a reputation over the last few days, receiving acclaim from the likes of The Guardian and NME for their lush, swooning vocals and catchy, jangly melodies.

Belako: 
Second Spanish band of the line up, Belako are known for delivering catchy slices of post-punk and their recent album Render Me Numb, Trivial Violence is a gritty collection of raw, swirling offerings.

Skinny Girl Diet:
Long time favourites of GIHE, it’s wonderful to see Skinny Girl Diet building their reputation and playing such big stages. I first saw them at The Shacklewell Arms a few years ago, and they blew me away with their seething, Riot Grrrl-inspired energy and rousing, grunge-fuelled sound.

LIVE: PINS – The Garage, London 08.11.17

“Iggy Pop couldn’t make it tonight, so you’ll have to make do with me instead” joked PINS‘ bassist Anna at the band’s headline London show last night. She was introducing ‘Aggrophobe’, the collaborative track which catapulted PINS in to public consciousness earlier this year. Needless to say, she aced Iggy’s spoken word parts and along with band-mates Faith, Lois, Sophie & Kyoko, proved that PINS are a band with sparkling talent.

Fresh off the back of supporting The Breeders on their European tour, PINS were glammed up and ready to give the crowds plenty of their thunderous post-punk sounds. Opening their set with the hypnotising ‘Trouble’, the crowd were swaying in time to the snaking bass lines and devious guitar ruffs, before they were treated to several new tracks that full of stomping percussion and plenty of PINS’ trademark commanding lyrics. 2012 single ‘LUVU4LYF’ sounded as sharp and vital as their new offerings, as did iconic Wild Nights track ‘Young Girls’ which the band closed their set with.

The glorious ‘Bad Thing’ – the title track of their most recent EP – bled perfectly into latest single ‘Serve The Rich’, which is laced with rallying cries and bold bass lines. Vocalist Faith delivered her lyrics with effortless confidence and charisma and became the human catalyst for dancing when she moved from stage to barrier to interact with fans. ‘Girls Like Us’ gave her the perfect opportunity to do this and members of support band Madonnatron didn’t hesitate to scale the barriers and join her for a dance on stage.

PINS’ gigs are always polished, fist-pumpingly good affairs that prove these Manchester post-punks are the coolest girls in town, with a sound that’s equal parts fierce and fun. Make sure you get involved next time.

Track Of The Day: Suzie Stapleton – ‘Yesterday’s Town’

If “delay-laden guitar riffs and dusty vocals” are your thing, then Suzie Stapleton‘s new track ‘Yesterday’s Town’ is going to tick all of your listening boxes. Born in Australia, Stapleton relocated to London in 2015 and has kept a busy recording schedule on various projects between tours and opening for acts such as Mick Harvey, Mark Lanegan and Boss Hog.

Earlier this year, Stapleton appeared on Lydia Lunch & Cypress Grove’s unlikely covers album Under The Covers (Rustblade Records), lending her voice to several of the tracks. This project was spawned via Stapleton’s collaborations with Cypress Grove on The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project (feat. Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Debbie Harry, Thurston Moore).

To celebrate the release of her new single, Suzie has made ‘Yesterday’s Town’ available as a free download for her fans, which can be accessed via www.suziestapleton.com. She will also be playing a London launch show on November 8th at The Old Blue Last, with more dates live dates to be announced shortly.
