Track Of The Day: KIN – ‘Sharing Light’

In a whirlwind of a time to be alive, London indie-pop trio KIN bring their listeners a comforting and emotionally atmospheric debut single.

With a remarkable title that brings a glimmer of hope in its meaning, ‘Sharing Light’ instrumentally serves the essence of its name through iridescent guitar tones and graceful vocals. Each element KIN bring to this single seems to dance around another, leaving each its own space to float and be gentle.

A simple setting, next to the water, paints an honest self-reflective moment as Grace’s vocals reflect relatable thoughts. Revolving machine-like drums anchor the whispiness of the dainty mix with a tasty and echoing loop that grounds its stirring feeling.

KIN offer a raw and earnest emotion to the pop template, something that the world is seeking now more than ever in a world of uncertainty. Throughout ‘Sharing Light’, KIN’s emotional burden of worry for tomorrow is continually triumphed by remaining present and serves as a lesson for us all at this time. They beautifully articulate the intricate integrity of human nature and hope throughout this captivating debut, in a way that needs to be felt just at the right time.

Produced by Nicholas Alexander and mastered by Tim Rowkins, ‘Sharing Light‘ is out now.

Track Of The Day: Captain Handsome – ‘I Wish I Had A Dog’

Having been a pretty massive fan of indie-pop superstars Fightmilk for a couple of years now, it’s exciting to see that Lily from the band has now shared the first single from new solo project Captain Handsome.

A poignant exploration of every-day anxieties, ‘I Wish I Had A Dog’ flows with jangly hooks and a gentle electro whirr as Lily’s distinctive silky-smooth-yet-gritty vocals ooze a touching raw emotion. With a twinkling lo-fi scuzz alongside the sensitivity of Lily’s refreshingly honest and consistently relatable lyricism (“I feel so strange and I can’t keep up”), it’s a slice of effervescent indie-pop that tugs at the heartstrings in all the right ways.

(FYI, though, I really wish I had a cat or a rabbit like the one pictured, not a dog…)

‘I Wish I Had A Dog’ is out now via Reckless Yes, and is taken from Captain Handsome’s upcoming EP, set for release in early 2020.

Track Of The Day: Superglu – ‘Forever Endeavour’

Having been firm favourites of ours with previous offerings such as ‘Weekend’ and ‘Dreams’, and having wowed us with their incredible live show at our first ever gig at The Finsbury, Manningtree band Superglu are back with their first single in two years, and we couldn’t be happier!

Oozing the band’s trademark buoyant energy, ‘Forever Endeavour’ reminds us of all we’ve been missing over the last couple of years. Filled with a gentle sentimentality that we may not have heard in previous releases, alongside those scuzzy hooks and whirring harmonies that we all know and love, this new single is sure to add a little bit of sunshine to these dark Autumn evenings; an instantly uplifting and immensely infectious indie-pop anthem.

Of the track, lead vocalist Ben explains:

The band had stopped making music and my girlfriend Krista (and bass player) was preparing to move to Berlin. I was at a low point. As I sat in my house strumming the chords and singing the verse, I heard Krista singing a potential chorus whilst packing upstairs: “Remember the good times” seemed to summarise it all… This is a love-letter from me and Krista to both SuperGlu and one another – a swan song we thought no one would hear has found new meaning and brought SuperGlu back to life.”

‘Forever Endeavour’ is out now via Don’t Try. Catch Superglu live (we were gutted to miss them in London last night!):

16th October – The Lending Room, Leeds
17th October – The Basement, York
18th October – Record Junkee, Sheffield
19th October – Wild Paths Festival, Norwich

Track Of The Day: Grizzly Coast – ‘High-Functioning’

If you’re struggling to keep your head above life’s turbulent waters, then Grizzly Coast‘s latest single ‘High Functioning’ will resonate with you. The Toronto-based indie musician has documented her personal struggle with OCD via buoyant guitar riffs and relatable lyrics.

Grizzly Coast (aka Alannah Kavanagh) has spent most of 2019 releasing singles – including the brilliant ‘Half Light Boy’ – and putting together tracks for her debut EP which is set for release in 2020. Her refreshing indie-pop sounds are often underscored by emotive contexts (break-ups, dealing with OCD), and ‘High Functioning’ showcases her resilience as a woman and a songwriter.

Speaking about her new track, Alannah explains: “’High-Functioning’ is a song about holding your life together in every place but your own head. When I wrote the lyrics, I was going through a difficult time with my OCD. During that period, nobody in my life could tell that my inner world was overwhelming because I was right on the ball in so many other capacities. One particular night, I thought to myself – “I may as well try to write instead of just sitting and stewing in these uncomfortable feelings”. By powering forward and working towards my goals in the face of struggle, I built a solid foundation to stand on where I found both the purpose and drive I needed to stay confident through it all. I was ‘High-Functioning’ in every sense of the term”.

We’re glad Alannah is able to function in the face of adversity, and we’re looking forward to hearing more of her poignant work. Watch the video for ‘High Functioning’ below and follow Grizzly Coast on Facebook for more updates.
