LISTEN: LIME – ‘Toad Men’

A witty commentary on the folks you might see on your cheap-and-cheerful package holiday, LIME have shared their latest track, ‘Toad Men’. Released today (1st May), the track was recorded during the current lockdown period, and any money raised from downloads & purchases of the accompanying zine will go straight to charity!

Coming together from across the UK, LIME are now based in Brighton, and the four-piece mix elements of psych, indie, and other genres to create their buoyant guitar tunes. Following on from previous single ‘Surf n Turf’, ‘Toad Men’ sees the group musing about the characters they’ve come across on their budget travels.

“Thomas cooked it, overbooked it this time” the band jest, with deadpan “oooh la las” and garage rock riffs underscoring their observations about “Mayfair cigarettes and eating fish and chips.” It’s easy to imagine you’re somewhere else when listening to the track, and that’s exactly the kind of escapism the band had in mind when they were writing it.

Due to the current lockdown/coronavirus situation, we’re unable to make it in to the Hoxton Radio studio to broadcast our weekly live new music show from 7-9pm. Instead, we’re sharing previous show recordings as #ThrowbackThursday sessions, so you can still enjoy 2 hours of new music & chats with some of our favourite artists each week.

Today, we’ve picked our May 2018 show with feminist punks The Menstrual Cramps. The grrrls talked to Mari & Kate about their second album, Free Bleedin, how they stand up to neo-nazis, and what originally inspired them to start making music. Kate also casually dropped into the conversation that she won Cooper’s guitar in a raffle at Loud Women‘s 2018 Galentine’s Day Ball (she still hasn’t learned how to play it.)

LISTEN: Nat Vazer – ‘For A Moment’

A gentle, lo-fi reflection on loves past and present; Nat Vazer has shared her latest single, ‘For a Moment’. Taken from her second album, Is This Offensive And Loud?, which is set for release on 29th May via Hotel Motel Records, the track quietly broods with nostalgic tenderness.

Since the release of her 2018 EP, We Used To Have Real Conversations, Vazer has toured with Lime Cordiale and supported the likes of Last Dinosaurs, #1 Dads, Carla Geneve and The Magic Numbers. Her understated but infectious indie melodies, coupled with her smooth vocals mean Vazer’s tracks radiate with a humble indie buzz; and ‘For a Moment’ is another shining example of this.

“[The track] is a love song about an ex-work colleague,” Vazer explains. “There is a strange time-warping feeling you get sometimes when you fall for someone hard, where time can appear to stand still while everything around you seems like a blur. ‘For A Moment’ indulges in that fantasy. It’s about chasing something forbidden, a longing for someone you can’t really be with and the overwhelming fear of the possibility.”

LISTEN: MAITA – ‘Someone’s Lost Their Goddamn Wallet’

“We’re all goners”, Maria Maita-Keppeler joyfully sings on MAITA‘s latest single, ‘Someone’s Lost Their Goddamn Wallet’. Lifted from the band’s debut album Best Wishes, (set for release on 15th May via Kill Rock Stars), the track is a light-hearted musing on the inevitable, and relatable human fear of death.

Formed of Maita-Keppeler (principle songwriter, guitars), Matthew Zeltzer (electric guitar), Nevada Sowle (bass), and Cooper Trail (piano/drums); Portland-based MAITA caught our attention with their tenderly frustrated sounds on single ‘Can’t Blame A Kid’ earlier this year. On new track ‘Someone’s Lost Their Goddamn Wallet’, the band cover a dark subject with buoyant guitar riffs and an energetic, catchy chorus.

Maita-Keppeler explains the context of the new single further: ‘Someone’s Lost Their Goddamn Wallet’ was inspired by my experience with college parties. Every weekend at some grimy house filled with young, drunk people, I would have that moment late at night where I stared into the crowd and remembered that death was waiting for all of us, regardless of how alive we felt. In those moments, everything would suddenly seem insignificant, and we became so naive and small. I wanted to hide the gravity of this truth within a song that felt vibrant and full of life, just as these dark truths were hidden for me within nights of intoxicated revelry. The song carries a different weight for me today, in the midst of this new Covid reality, where the dark truth seems more exposed than ever, and the quest for joy feels more urgent, almost desperate.”
