Track Of The Day: Currls – ‘Winter Time Blues’

Usually known for their scuzzy garage rock offerings, Brighton band Currls have now shared a stirring festive ballad.

With all proceeds of the single going to Mind Charity UK, ‘Winter Time Blues’ flows with beautifully twinkling melodies and sweeping, soulful vocals. Oozing a nostalgic sense of romanticism, shimmering harmonies and a lilting, uplifting energy, it offers a delicate sense of hope and unity to those who might be feeling alone or struggling with their mental health right now. The band explain:

“… We understand that this has been a very difficult year for everyone and has taken a massive toll on many people’s mental health, physical health and well-being. We thought  that in all of this madness the only thing to do at this time of year was to try and spread a little love and encourage others to do so, and remind each other that togetherness can be our greatest strength.”

‘Winter Time Blues’ is available to buy exclusively on Bandcamp with all proceeds being donated to Mind UK, we will continue this until 7th January and hope to round up the amount and donate this to Mind.

Track Of The Day: HMS Morris – ‘Partypooper’

Having previously beguiled our ears with singles such as ‘Poetry’ and ‘Babanod’, as well as wowing us with their live show at The Finsbury a couple of years back, Welsh indie-psych outfit HMS Morris have now shared an exuberant new track.

Sounding as wonderfully wacky as the name suggests, ‘Partypooper’ is a response to the mental highs and lows of being a musician. Offering an uplifting brass-led fusion of sounds alongside front woman Heledd’s quirky playfulness and vibrant energy, it’s a colourful, latin-infused cacophony, set to bring some sunshine to the dreariest of Autumn days. Of the track, Heledd explains:

A great deal of us struggle with a little internal partypooper, a malignant imp who likes to wait until we’re at our happiest before screwing up her mean little face and blowing mightily on her shit-horn of doubt and regret, leaving our ears ringing and our confidence in tatters as she skips gleefully away.”

‘Partypooper’ is out now via Bubblewrap Collective.

VIDEO PREMIERE: Dear Pariah – ‘Not Ready’

Tinged with melancholy, but ultimately a hopeful tune about emerging from the shadow of a truly testing time, Dear Pariah has shared a beautiful animation to accompany her single ‘Not Ready’. Created by her good friends Ksenia & Alex at WMAF Productions, the visuals personify the mental health struggles Dear Pariah (aka Charlie Hinchcliff) faced during the unsettling days before she was diagnosed with a long term health condition called Sarcoidosis.

“I found myself writing ‘Not Ready’ when I was waiting to find out whether I had Lymphoma or a rare disease called Sarcoidosis,” Hinchcliff explains. “After the biopsy, I had this eerie space of 2 weeks waiting for the results that would change my life, either way. I was filled with fear of what could be whilst also reflecting on the past few years wondering how I’d ended up here. I was only 27, how was this possible?”

She embraced these fearful moments and wrote some of her most honest lyrics to date on her recent EP, Live at Thais. ‘Not Ready’ is a journey through her changing emotional state, gently acknowledging the guilt, regrets and intense distress that comes with facing death at such a young age. This fear is symbolised by the blue bear in the track’s accompanying video.

“When Ksenia came to me with the bear storyline, I knew she got it,” Hinchcliff continues. “It was an amazing moment of feeling seen and understood deeply. Seeing her and Alex turn my most vulnerable song into something so beautiful has been incredibly moving and healing for me. There’s a whole lot of life out there and I’m so grateful to be around to finally enjoy it.”

Track Of The Day: MIRI – ‘Just Breathe’

With acclaim from the likes of BBC 6Music, and performances for Sofar Sounds and supporting Laura Viers at Bush Hall, GIHE fave and previous radio guest host MIRI has recently shared a poignant new single.

Released to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Day earlier this month, ‘Just Breathe’ reflects on the negative impact some social media can have, whilst delivering a message of love and positivity. Propelled by a soothing, soulful splendour and emotion-strewn majesty, the soaring heartfelt power of Miri’s distinctive vocals flows alongside an uplifting musicality, oozing an endearing sense of hope. With resonant lyrics such as “You can call on me, I’ll be the safe space that you need”, it’s a stirring ode to self care and taking care of those you love, at a time when we need it the most.

Of the track, MIRI explains: “Just Breathe is my message to anyone struggling mentally to please reach out for help. We are living in an incredibly stressful and intense time especially with the pandemic. It can all have a major impact on our mental health and wellbeing which is why it was important for me to release this track for WMHD.”

‘Just Breathe’ is accompanied by a beautifully calming video, directed by Kate Lane. Watch here:
