Video Premiere: LibraLibra – ‘Listerine’

With support from the likes of Radio X, BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio, Brighton-based LibraLibra have been firm favourites of GIHE for some time now, never ceasing to impress. Having just released their debut EP, they have now shared a brand new video for poignant EP closer ‘Listerine’.

A step away from the usual high energy riotous cacophonies of previous releases, ‘Listerine’ reflects on lingering painful memories. Showcasing the incredible soaring splendour and versatility of front woman Beth Cannon’s vocals with an almost operatic force, the track oozes a  glistening soulful majesty, creating a striking cinematic soundscape. With blissful twinkling keys providing the backdrop to Beth’s vocals, it’s filled with poignant, reflective lyricism as a raw, emotion-strewn power builds to a magnificent, immense anthem of self-realisation. Exuding an exquisite effervescent beauty and starkly stirring sentiment, it will sweep you off your feet with its spellbinding melancholic grandeur.

Of the track, Beth explains:

It’s for anyone who can’t get rid of that bad taste in their mouth. A taste that haunts you, that makes you wanna scrub your mouth out with soap. Originally I wrote this to try and explain the meaning behind the song: There is this scene in the film ‘Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind’ by Micheal Gondry where Jim Carey’s memories are in the mist of being erased and he’s a child trying to hide from the erasure process with his memory of Kate Winslet as a kid and they are scared and they are running whilst the world collapses around them. ‘Listerine’ is built around the concept of wanting to go back and protect the younger you, to take their hand when their world is crumbling around them and tell them everything is going to be ok. Together we can run and together we will conquer even the darkest days. It’s a song of reflection and hindsight and like ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ reminds us when it comes down to it even the most painful memories make us who we are. Now this still rings true but at 4.44am I’m lying here wanting to say more, but I can’t, not right now, the wounds are too deep, the pain is still so real and so raw even 17 years later, I can’t find the words to explain, it’s only through the music that I can find some sense of meaning and for me it provides a melancholic moment of hope.”

VIDEO PREMIERE: Magick Mountain – ‘Infinity X2’

A colourful, trippy set of visuals that compliment the cacophony of sounds they accompany, Leeds-based trio Magick Mountain have shared a video for their latest single ‘Infinity X2’. Lifted from their debut album Weird Feelings, which is set for release on 23rd October, the track is “a psychedelic punk love song” filled with fuzzed up riffs and frenzied percussion.

Formed of Lins Wilson (Grammatics & Mother Vulpine), Tom Hudson (Pulled Apart By Horses) and Nestor Matthews (Sky Larkin, Menace Beach), Magick Mountain craft energetic, psych-infused, frantic guitar tunes that explore everything from fantastical worlds to ancient mythology and mystical metaphors. On ‘Infinity X2′ the band hurtle into the idea of two lovers’ worlds colliding and merging into one.

The accompanying video is a collaboration between the band and analogue “VFX wizard” Josh Brownrigg. Of the footage, Wilson explains: “It was self-filmed in our practise space, which involved metres of gaffa-hung green fabric, make-shift tripods, a last minute lighting ‘rig’ and a state of the art spinning cam courtesy of a 1980s record player and phone holder. After Magick Mountain bassist/artman Tom Hudson edited the footage, we handed over the reins to Josh to work his glitchy visual sorcery, using analogue video synthesisers to experiment with tripped-out trails and create the mega fuzzed-up aesthetic. With its blues, deep purples, corals and pinks complimenting Tom’s cover artwork for the single, the video becomes part of the overall visual and sonic onslaught brought to you by Magick Mountain.”

LISTEN: Bitch Falcon – ‘Test Trip’

A rapturous blend of urgent riffs and charged percussion, Dublin trio Bitch Falcon have shared their latest single ‘Test Trip’. Lifted from their debut album Staring At Clocks, which is set for release via Brighton label Small Pond on 6th November, the band seamlessly blend the heavy and melodic together to create a cathartic slice of shoegaze inspired sound.

Formed of Lizzie Fitzpatrick (vocals/guitar), Barry O’Sullivan (bass) and Nigel Kenny (drums), Bitch Falcon have been firm favourites of GIHE since they played live for us at The Finsbury Pub with Trash Kit in 2017. Since then, they’ve shared stages with the likes of Girl Band, Fontaines DC, Torche, Black Peaks, and Pussy Riot.

Exploring the fleeting feelings of running away and escaping your situation, ‘Test Trip’ is a formidable fluctuation of loud and quiet, filled with equal parts soothing and abrasive elements. Listen to the track below and follow Bitch Falcon on Spotify and Facebook for more updates.
