Track Of The Day: LibraLibra – ‘Juicy Lucy’

With support from the likes of Radio X, BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio, Brighton-based LibraLibra have been firm favourites of GIHE for some time now, never ceasing to impress. And we remain throughly impressed by their latest incredible offering.

Taken from their upcoming debut EP, ‘Juicy Lucy’ takes aim at the desire for a ‘perfect life’ and society’s obsession with celebrity culture and body image. A raging cacophony, it races with immense thunderous beats and frenzied hooks as the angst-driven power and gritty splendour of Beth Cannon’s vocal soars. A magnificent, riotous chaos; a ferocious swirling soundscape that defies genres and leaves you needing more of its unique, vibrant energy.

Of the track, Beth explains:

“The whole concept of the song itself is about obsession and escapism – despising being in your own skin and wanting to be someone else so badly you start to fixate, obsess upon another worldly being, you would even resort to attempting to consume them if it meant some of their radiance might rub off on to your own mundane and wretched being…”

WATCH: Siv Disa – ‘Fear’

New York based singer-songwriter Siv Disa has now shared her latest single, ‘Fear’ – an escape artist’s ponderings on intimacy.

Disa sings confidentially in laid-back vocals about her aversion to intimacy, both revealing and repelling us. She likes things just a little bit out of reach, a little bit undecided otherwise she’d have to take a risk; asking “is that fear?” in the chorus, telling us she doesn’t like to think about that too much.

The up-close-and-personal lyrics are accompanied by mellow analog synths and beats that lull you into a false sense of security, creating a glistening majestic soundscape. 

In the video, Disa is literally running away from us in barren, snow-driven fields. We never see her face except in overexposed over-the-shoulder glances towards a car’s high beams.

Track Of The Day: DOLLS – ‘Eggshells’

A catchy slice of garage rock that coolly admits “Everything is messed up”, Dolls have shared their latest single ‘Eggshells’. Lifted from their upcoming EP of the same name, the record (released via Mondo/Death Waltz) will be available on limited edition multi-coloured & etched vinyl as part of the Love Record Stores event on 20th June.

After sharing their debut EP Pop The Bubble in 2018, vocalist & guitarist Jade and drummer Bel have been busy writing new material and working with Producer Margo Broom (Hermitage Studio Works) to create more of their energetic guitar tunes. Filled with buoyant riffs, crashing percussion and strong vocals, ‘Eggshells’ is the first offering from the new EP.

“Eggshells is about the struggles that we have faced in our 20’s” explains Jade about the band’s new record. “Losing friends, creepy men, the strive for perfectionism and day-to-day anxiety. We have written about what we feel is really important as we get older. Musically, we have evolved with this EP and although the gritty garage rock is still there we’ve broadened our sound with synths, percussion and multiple vocal layers.”

LISTEN: Mykki Blanco (feat. Devendra Banhart) – ‘You Will Find It’

Mykki Blanco really doesn’t need any introduction from us. Queer pioneer and musician/rapper extraordinaire they have been an inspiration for the GIHE team for quite some time, and dazzled us with their live performance more than once. So, I’ve surprised myself by only just coming across their latest track, which was released back in April; I must have missed it amongst everything else going on at the moment. But I couldn’t not share it, just in case any of our followers – like me – missed it at the time too. It’s too wonderful not to. You need this in your ears. Better late than never, and definitely most needed right now.

Teaming up with ethereal musician Devendra Banhart and producer FaltyDL, ‘You Will Find It’ oozes a glistening, soulful splendour as shimmering hooks and swirling atmospherics provide the backdrop for Blanco’s trademark gritty power. Replacing their usual driving, glitchy energy with a haunting, soothing aura, with the help of Banhart and FaltyDL, they have created a perfect tranquil interlude; an alluring soundscape to immerse yourself in and find blissful cathartic release.

Of the track, Blanco expands:

“‘You Will Find It’ is a meditation. I don’t believe that everything spiritual has to feel so heavy and serious; I feel the opposite, actually. If people associated prayer with laughter, if prayer was made to feel sensual and funny and bitchy and ordinary, then I think more people would be comfortable acknowledging some kind of personal divine connection. This song is about exploring that connection: I should be able to smoke a joint with God and just chill a bit.”
