PREMIERE: Pinlight – ‘Grow Slow’

Based in Edinburgh, hearing-impaired songwriter Jenny Laahs, aka Pinlight, creates electro-driven retro-tinged soundscapes, all produced in mono to reflect her hearing loss. Following 2019’s debut album, she has now shared an uptempo brand new single.

With ’80s-infused synth-driven hooks, ‘Grow Slow’ flows with an uplifting twinkling energy and Laahs’ luscious honey-sweet vocals. With shades of the likes of Christine and the Queens, it offers a glitchy, whirring soundscape driven by an infectious shimmering zest. A refreshingly uptempo slice of sunny alt-pop, it’s the perfect danceable accompaniment to a solo lockdown living room rave. Of the track, Jenny explains:

I wrote Grow Slow in 2018. I had written the hook – the “I’ve been waiting and waiting” line – several years prior but didn’t do anything with it, so it lay forgotten in an old songwriting notebook. When I came across it again the melody was still really fresh in my mind so I figured it was catchy enough to write a song around. I didn’t really connect with the “waiting” idea when I first wrote the hook, which is probably why it was left dormant for so long, but at that point in 2018, I had begun consciously trying to slow down my pace in general, taking things as they come and not worrying so much about whether things were right straight away. So the rest of the lyrics just came from ruminating more on that theme.

EP: Elsa Hewitt – ‘Ghostcats’

Whatever your mood, electronic artist & producer Elsa Hewitt has a tune to defuse or accompany it. What she achieves through improvisation, many would struggle to create with the most calculated intentions; and her dizzying blend of looped synths & vocals on new EP Ghostcats beautifully showcases her intuitive talent.

Described by Hewitt as an “opener” for her next release Lupa (due later this year), Ghostcats is a collection of minimal electronic compositions that have a soothing, almost translucent quality to them. Filled with celestial looping vocal harmonies, the ambient ‘Godly’ opens the EP, followed by the equally ethereal ‘Massive Charade’. It meanders in to brief but beautiful tracks ‘Wave State’ and ‘Mounting Up’. On each of her tracks, Hewitt’s breathy vocals and spacious synthesizers merge together to create a soothing, fuzzy atmosphere reminiscent of a lucid dream.

There’s a pleasantly jarring quality to tracks ‘Still’, ‘Kevlar’ and ‘Easy’, whilst ‘Raspberry’ is sweet and breezy. On ‘Velvet Scrunchy’, it feels like Hewitt is toying with the soft accessory the track is named after; gently opening and closing her palm around the garment. The twinkling sound of ‘Rebird’ close the EP, which from its opening loop has been a soothing sonic head rush.

A much needed distraction in these strange times, Elsa Hewitt’s Ghostcats is a blissful electronic offering, designed to leave you reassuringly lightheaded.

VIDEO PREMIERE: Death Hags – ‘The Darkest Night’

A slow-burning, intoxicating soundscape that explores what the night can bring; Death Hags has shared visuals for her latest single, ‘The Darkest Night’. The track is lifted from her recent album, Big Grey Sun #2, which is the second part of an ambitious seven album multimedia project.

Based in L.A., electronic musician Death Hags (aka Lola G) fuses pulsing beats with dark, kaleidoscopic synth textures to create her captivating sounds. Inspired by two days worth of hallucinations caused by a dog bite, she released Big Grey Sun #1 in 2019. Album #2 quickly followed in March 2020, and continues to explore the eclectic nature of the human condition and all of its possible futures. ‘The Darkest Night’ is an extract from this continuing narrative.

“I started writing the song in the van during the drive back to L.A. from SXSW last year” explains Death Hags. “It came to life at Outside Inside Studio in Italy, with my friend Matt Bordin of the psychedelic collective Squadra Omega. Matt is a great producer and has some wonderful analog/modular synths that we used on this track. Not to be too on the nose, but I guess this track is about forging ahead into the night, to see what dawn brings.”

LISTEN: Jackie Lynn – ‘Casino Queen’

Grab your silver cowboy boots, put on your sequin dress, and prepare to strut your stuff to ‘Casino Queen’, the latest single from Jackie Lynn. Taken from the band’s sophomore album Jacqueline, (set for release on 10th April via Drag City), the song is a driving, disco-infused offering from the mysterious American group.

Jackie Lynn is the fictional alter ego of songwriter Haley Fohr, who is also known for her work with indie folk project Circuit des Yeux. Along with band members Cooper Crain, Rob Frye and Dan Quinlivan, Fohr has returned to continue Jackie’s ongoing narrative on her new album.

‘Casino Queen’ is a pulsing, 80s tinged electro-tune that brims with confidence and attitude. “Girl you’re on a roll / the whole room wants to know / how they didn’t notice you” sings Fohr, over hypnotic beats and buzzing synths. The song is also accompanied by a video directed by both Fohr and Krzys Piotrowski.

Fohr kindly elaborates on the track’s visuals: “‘Casino Queen’ showcases a night in the life of Jacqueline. The song and video follow the letting go of an individual’s underdog mentality, realigning it with the winner’s place. What does it take to refocus one’s internal mirror and become a ‘Casino Queen’? All in due time shall we each define ourselves prosperous by way of intuition, self belief, nearby shoulders, a bit of luck, and maybe a wig.”
