Track Of The Day: Vulpynes – ‘Sister’

Following last year’s EP Dye Me Red, and having shared a stage with the likes of Sleaford Mods, Dublin’s Molly and Kaz – aka Vulpynes – are now back to blast into our ears with a gritty new single.

Propelled by Molly’s raw, impassioned vocals, ‘Sister’ is a powerful ode to ‘pseudo sisterhood’. Driven by swirling, reverb-strewn hooks, pounding primal beats and a raging energy, it oozes an immense sense of urgency amid a seething eerie underlying force. A fantastically fierce, empowered slice of ferocious rock magnificence from the Dublin duo.

Vulpynes had been halfway through recording their debut album when Covid19 struck, and so due to travel restrictions and Ireland being in complete disarray, they were sadly unable to finish it. After much consideration, they have decided to release the first half of the album as a single sided limited edition 12″. The EP, Us Against Them, will be released via F.O.A.D/Advance Records.

Track Of The Day: LibraLibra – ‘Juicy Lucy’

With support from the likes of Radio X, BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio, Brighton-based LibraLibra have been firm favourites of GIHE for some time now, never ceasing to impress. And we remain throughly impressed by their latest incredible offering.

Taken from their upcoming debut EP, ‘Juicy Lucy’ takes aim at the desire for a ‘perfect life’ and society’s obsession with celebrity culture and body image. A raging cacophony, it races with immense thunderous beats and frenzied hooks as the angst-driven power and gritty splendour of Beth Cannon’s vocal soars. A magnificent, riotous chaos; a ferocious swirling soundscape that defies genres and leaves you needing more of its unique, vibrant energy.

Of the track, Beth explains:

“The whole concept of the song itself is about obsession and escapism – despising being in your own skin and wanting to be someone else so badly you start to fixate, obsess upon another worldly being, you would even resort to attempting to consume them if it meant some of their radiance might rub off on to your own mundane and wretched being…”

Track Of The Day: DOLLS – ‘Eggshells’

A catchy slice of garage rock that coolly admits “Everything is messed up”, Dolls have shared their latest single ‘Eggshells’. Lifted from their upcoming EP of the same name, the record (released via Mondo/Death Waltz) will be available on limited edition multi-coloured & etched vinyl as part of the Love Record Stores event on 20th June.

After sharing their debut EP Pop The Bubble in 2018, vocalist & guitarist Jade and drummer Bel have been busy writing new material and working with Producer Margo Broom (Hermitage Studio Works) to create more of their energetic guitar tunes. Filled with buoyant riffs, crashing percussion and strong vocals, ‘Eggshells’ is the first offering from the new EP.

“Eggshells is about the struggles that we have faced in our 20’s” explains Jade about the band’s new record. “Losing friends, creepy men, the strive for perfectionism and day-to-day anxiety. We have written about what we feel is really important as we get older. Musically, we have evolved with this EP and although the gritty garage rock is still there we’ve broadened our sound with synths, percussion and multiple vocal layers.”

Track Of The Day: Emma Kupa – ‘Nothing At All’

Having been a big fan of Mammoth Penguins for some time now, especially since they delivered a total dream of a set for us at The Finsbury last year, it’s lovely to see that front person Emma Kupa has now announced the release of her debut solo album.

Taken from the album, lead single ‘Nothing At All’ flows with Kupa’s distinctive luscious vocals, oozing a subtle gritty raw emotion, alongside twinkling folk-strewn melodies. Filled with a reflective, heartfelt lyrical storytelling, it’s impossible not to become utterly immersed in the song’s subtle passion that shines through amongst its effervescent uptempo musicality. As it builds with shimmering harmonies, the beauty of multiple voices coming together, uniting, creates a truly heartwarming slice of stirring indie-pop.

Of the track, Emma explains:

“The song channels the emotions of being stuck in a relationship which is going nowhere. Frustrating and confusing, you feel lost because you don’t know what you can do about it. In fact, all you can do is nothing and let it move on without you.“

It Will Come Easier, the upcoming album from Emma Kupa, is released on 18th September via Fika Recordings (UK) and Palo Santo (USA).
