Track Of The Day: MIRI – ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’

Having wowed us live on more than one occasion with her impassioned live performance, London based artist and friend of GIHE, MIRI, has now shared her new single.

A soulful, heartfelt rendition of ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’, it oozes the unique gritty power of MIRI’s emotion strewn vocals, alongside twinkling keys and a sweeping majestic splendour. Adding her own distinct vibes, MIRI has created a unique, stirring ode to the Cyndi Lauper classic. Of the single, MIRI explains:

“Girls Just Want To Have Fun has become very personal to me. There‘s so much I‘m able to express beyond the song itself. One of the most emotional times performing it was when I was guest hosting at Bar Wotever. I was asked to sing the song so that we could all pay tribute to the victims who lost their lives in the Manchester arena bombings.”

Track Of The Day: New Pagans – ‘Admire’

A humble, shimmering ode to the perseverance that’s needed to keep a long-term relationship going; New Pagans‘ latest single ‘Admire’ is a beautifully relatable listen. The track is lifted from the Belfast-based band’s debut EP, Glacial Erratic, which is set for release on 6th March.

Proof that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side (even if you’ve daydreamed about it), New Pagans’ treatment of love and its many faults is far more romantic than any Valentine’s card or bouquet. Lyndsey McDougall’s lyricism and smooth vocal delivery float above atmospheric guitars, swirling bass lines, and driving percussion. “Let’s preserve our old ways / lets’s preserve them always” she sings, as the song builds to a cathartic cacophony of shoegaze noise, removing all sense of doubt about why you chose to stay faithful.

‘Admire’ follows the band’s previous singles ‘Charlie Has The Face Of A Saint’ and ‘It’s Darker’, all of which are featured on their upcoming EP. They’ll be playing a handful of UK shows in early March (dates below), so make sure you get yourself a live dose of New Pagans’ realistic romanticism. It’s certainly softening our thick skin.

Track Of The Day: HMS Morris – ‘Babanod’

In a mesmerizingly glitchy new tune, Welsh psychedelia-smiths HMS Morris bring their listeners on an ethereal journey in ‘Babanod’.

With a swirling slow build at the song’s start, HMS Morris gracefully casts a spell made of warm synths and a pulsing back-beat that feels anthemic from the moment the haunting vocals begin. The mood established here is both adventurous and relaxing, providing a soundscape that can just as easily be danced to or studied to.

Branching across several sonic moods creates a captivating and accessible track, impossible to pigeon-hole into one genre. ‘Babanod’ has such rich tones impending from their entire instrumental mix, from explosive breaks at each chorus to dwelling atmospheres that linger throughout its verses, with dynamics playing a huge role in the soaring psychedelic sound. The never-ending layers of synth and a tasty use of sonic space is reminiscent of shoegaze but with a whisper of ’80s pop in its melodies throughout.

HMS Morris’ knowledge and creativity within the electronic-psych genre is expansive and satisfying. ‘Babanod’ is an odyssey that feels like an exciting exploration of self.

Track Of The Day: Girl Ray – ‘Friend Like That’

Following the recent release of their second album Girl, and having charmed us on more than one occasion with their joy-filled live show, North London’s Girl Ray have now shared a new video for album track ‘Friend Like That’.

An ode to friendship, ‘Friend Like That’ flows with the trio’s colourful energy as jangly syncopated beats flow alongside the distinctive soothing allure of Poppy Hankin’s vocals and funk-filled pop-inspired hooks. Filled with a vibrant calypso-tinged zest, it’s a dreamily uplifting offering showcasing the band’s shimmering, sunny charm and their inspired matured sound. Of the track, the band explain:

“This is a friendship anthem. Reminds us of a really smashing high five with great contact. In music, friend love is often overshadowed by romantic love and IT’S JUST WRONG. This one goes out to the mates of the world.”

Filmed in their old school in Muswell Hill, the accompanying video depicts an ’80s themed/Carrie-inspired tale of female friendship in the face of the mean popular kids, and showcases the band’s endearing wit (and significant acting skills!).
