Track(s) Of The Day: Yumi And The Weather – ‘Long Before / Callum’

Yumi And The Weather is Brighton-based project fronted by the crystalline-voiced singer/songwriter/producer, Ruby Taylor. For those who let their ears and whole bodies drift to her wave, Yumi And The Weather make beautiful indie-electro pop, mixed with guitar, serving up dreams of endless, blissful summers, with an added depth. Now, Taylor has offered us a taste of what’s to come on next year’s debut album with a special AA side release.

‘Long Before’ is a sparkling guitar-led song reminiscent of Blondie. The lyrics soar around the crevices of a doomed relationship – “You were hiding from me/lying to me long before you came around to me.” The thrilling guitar solidifies the poignancy of the lyrics, lifting it up and letting it explode into sonic stardust.

‘Callum’, however, is a more introspective, electronica-fuelled offering. Another break-up song, Taylor’s voice repeats the name “Callum” throughout the beautiful chorus as the track builds to a powerful climax, ending with the poignant lyrics: “Like flowers that bloomed and slowly died… You didn’t seem to notice.”

Both tracks add beauty to the mundane, turning heartbreak into something transformative. The perfect sustinence for cold November days to make the endorphins dance again.

‘Long Before / Callum’ is out now via MIOHMI Records. Yumi And The Weather’s debut album is due for release in May 2018, but in the mean time, listen to more of her on Soundcloud – she deserves your love!

Track Of The Day: Queen Zee – ‘Idle Crown’

Hot on the heels of their last single ‘Fly The Pink Flag’, GIHEs favourites Queen Zee have released new track ‘Idle Crown’, and it’s a smartly executed piece of Marilyn Manson-esque garage punk. Released via the band’s own label Sasstone Records, the Liverpool group have yet to record something that we don’t instantly fall in love with.

Blending activism and politics into their fleshy, raucous tunes, ‘Idle Crown’ is another fiery gem in Queen Zee’s crown. Front person Zee explains the inspiration behind the track:”‘Idle Crown’ is essentially a narrative between two characters trapped in a toxic relationship. It’s something everyone can relate too, but what I wanted to do was question heteronormativity using a familiar setting. A theme throughout our album as a whole is society’s wish for LGBTQ+ people to conform to a standard, regardless of the happiness or health of them. Within ‘Idle Crown’, I used two LGBTQ+ characters trapped in a heteronormative relationship to express the pain of being unable to live as your true self”

The band will head back out on the road again with Marmozets in February 2018 to deliver more of their fearless, provocative sounds to the eager crowds who caught them live earlier this year. Together, Queen Zee (vocals/guitar), Jason Taylor Brown (guitar), Frank Wortho (bass), David Bloom (drums) and Courtney Colley (Keys & Vocals) “give so much of a fuck, that they really couldn’t give a single fuck” – and we’re more than happy to follow their example.

Track Of The Day: The Gravity Drive – ‘Shooting Star’

Based near my beloved Bridport (West Dorset), The Gravity Drive have been delivering their ethereal brand of indie pop for a couple of years now – to the acclaim of the likes of BBC Radio 2, 6Music’s Chris Hawkins and Mojo Magazine – and have now shared a charming new single.

As twinkly as the name suggests, ‘Shooting Star’ flows with delicate strummed hooks and glistening vocal harmonies to create a swirling, musically rich pop ballad. Soaring in its effervescent, emotion-strewn splendour, it’s a simply captivating delight for the ears, and a perfect accompaniment to the approaching festive season.

‘Shooting Star’ is out now, and make sure you catch The Gravity Drive live at our next night at The Finsbury on 8th December!
