#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: GIHE x Riot Grrrl Day x Record Store Day 11.04.19

Due to the current lockdown/coronavirus situation, we’re unable to make it in to the Hoxton Radio studio to broadcast our live new music show from 7-9pm for the foreseeable future.

We have plenty of past shows to share with you though! We’re sharing previous recordings as #ThrowbackThursday sessions, so you can still enjoy 2 hours of new music, and chats with some of our favourite artists each week.

Today, we’ve picked our April 2019 show that celebrated Record Store Day (13th April) and Riot Grrrl Day (9th April). We know RSD has been cancelled this year, but we’re treating this as an opportunity to reminisce, and to get excited about being able to browse in record shops again when this is all over.

Music highlights come from Art School Girlfriend, Elsa Hewitt, Soccer Mommy, LibraLibra, Velvet Volume & Zoey Lily – as well as feminist punk classics from Bikini Kill and X-Ray Spex.

LISTEN: Naz & Ella – ‘Freedom’

Inspired by the experience of Rahaf Mohammed – a young Saudi Arabian woman who fled an abusive family and oppressive regime with the hope of making it to Australia – Naz & Ella have shared their latest single. ‘Freedom’. Through tentative guitar picking and a clear lyrical narrative, the duo have created an understated, empowering tune.

“Freedom is a luxury” sing Naz & Ella, something that Rahaf Mohammed must know only too well. After fleeing her Saudi home, she was stopped in Thailand and almost deported back (where she would likely be incarcerated), before she was eventually granted asylum in Canada. Naz & Ella use their music to tell Rahaf’s inspirational story, communicating her feelings of desperation and relief along the way.

Track Of The Day: Fran Lobo – ‘Monster’

Jagged electronics, pulsing beats and striking vocals permeate ‘Monster’, the latest single from London-based artist Fran Lobo. Lifted from her new EP Brave, which is set for release on 19th June via via Slow Dance Records, the track is a collaborative effort exploring the frustrations surrounding identity, relationships, and reality.

Speaking about the track, Fran explains: “[It] started from a jam on a Volca sample I’d bought myself, and evolved into an embodiment of frustration with identity, relationships and dreams/reality. The song includes the voices of Deep Throat Choir, LIPS and the Roundhouse Choir, Jemma Freeman on guitar, [and] samples, rare drum machines and synthesisers”.

Fran’s fusion of voices, sounds, and themes makes ‘Monster’ a cohesive, impressive listen. The track is accompanied by a set of visuals that also hold significance for the artist: “The video is a journey from London to Southern India and back, exploring the displacement and search for identity experienced as a child of the diaspora. It deals with the idea of family, belonging and friendship and in doing so, asks audiences to question their own sense of identity.”

LISTEN: Zoe Wees – ‘Control’

A tender, deeply personal, uplifting offering; Zoe Wees has shared her latest track ‘Control’. The seventeen year old Hamburg-born singer uses her clear, powerful vocals to tentatively explore her struggles with rolandic childhood epilepsy.

“The sickness was stronger than me, and left scars that have become part of my life”, explains Wees about the condition. “Accepting them has taken so much time, but they make me what I am today: a fighter.” It’s this fighting spirit that underscores her lyrics on ‘Control’. Despite it’s upsetting premise, the track has a universal message of hope and recovery.
