VIDEO PREMIERE: Coral – ‘You’re Not Worth A Song But You Still Got One’

Expressing a sentiment that many an upset heart can relate to, Swedish newcomer Coral has shared visuals for her new track ‘You’re Not Worth A Song But You Still Got One’. The song is a b-side to her recent single ‘Find Me Wrong’, and the video is an intense two minute close-up of the artist silently processing her emotions in the shower.

Coral (aka Miranda Coral Engholm) grew up in Österlen in Sweden, but she originally has roots in Argentina and Stockholm. She began making music after she graduated from high school, and uses her songwriting to explore her own emotions.

Despite its brief duration, ‘You’re Not Worth A Song But You Still Got One’ is a poignant reflection on reluctance and divisions in feeling. The track’s sparse nature is reflected in the intimate visuals that accompany it, and the use of trickling water in both video and sound gives the track a tangible quality.

Speaking about her lyricism, Coral explains further: “I like the intimacy of it. Sometimes when I listen to a song, it can feel like a complete stranger is suddenly standing in my living room talking about something really personal. I can feel closely connected to that person even though I’m just listening to a recording…Like someone wrote it in their diary and it just happened to rhyme.”

Coral’s confessional songwriting is sure to strike a chord with tracks like this. Watch the video for ‘You’re Not Worth A Song But You Still Got One’ below, and follow Coral on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: Grizzly Coast – ‘High-Functioning’

If you’re struggling to keep your head above life’s turbulent waters, then Grizzly Coast‘s latest single ‘High Functioning’ will resonate with you. The Toronto-based indie musician has documented her personal struggle with OCD via buoyant guitar riffs and relatable lyrics.

Grizzly Coast (aka Alannah Kavanagh) has spent most of 2019 releasing singles – including the brilliant ‘Half Light Boy’ – and putting together tracks for her debut EP which is set for release in 2020. Her refreshing indie-pop sounds are often underscored by emotive contexts (break-ups, dealing with OCD), and ‘High Functioning’ showcases her resilience as a woman and a songwriter.

Speaking about her new track, Alannah explains: “’High-Functioning’ is a song about holding your life together in every place but your own head. When I wrote the lyrics, I was going through a difficult time with my OCD. During that period, nobody in my life could tell that my inner world was overwhelming because I was right on the ball in so many other capacities. One particular night, I thought to myself – “I may as well try to write instead of just sitting and stewing in these uncomfortable feelings”. By powering forward and working towards my goals in the face of struggle, I built a solid foundation to stand on where I found both the purpose and drive I needed to stay confident through it all. I was ‘High-Functioning’ in every sense of the term”.

We’re glad Alannah is able to function in the face of adversity, and we’re looking forward to hearing more of her poignant work. Watch the video for ‘High Functioning’ below and follow Grizzly Coast on Facebook for more updates.

Get In Her Ears Live @ The Finsbury w/ ĠENN, 11.10.19

Following a host of amazing bands playing for us lately, including Chorusgirl, Witching Waves, CLT DRP, Crumbs and Mammoth Penguins, we were back at The Finsbury on Friday with another dream of a line-up, for a jam-packed night of the best new music.

Kicking things off to a joyous start are Breakup Haircut. Treating us to songs about everything from wanting to be a “greaser”, to not feeling cool enough to move to Berlin, their set’s filled with an uplifting buoyant energy and infectious punk fuzz.

Next up, Bitch Hunt deliver their poignant offerings with stirring emotion. Covering themes of being non-binary, experiencing domestic abuse and general feelings of grief and being an outsider, they bring an impassioned energy and gritty power to an immense set.

Penultimate band of the night, The Weird Things, bring their racing energy propelled by the soaring vocals of front woman Leila, creating a set filled with rough ‘n’ ready rock ‘n’ roll anthems.

Having played for us twice before (under their former moniker Cryptic Street), it’s an honour to now have ĠENN headline for us. With their wonderfully eccentric charisma and immense, empowering spirit, they deliver impressive riffs and racing beats, enrapturing the crowd with their buoyant spirit, as vocalist Leona bounds across the stage in a whirlwind of joyous energy. Once again proving that they’re a force to be reckoned with, ĠENN deliver a memorable set that does not disappoint.

Massive thanks to all four bands who played for us on Friday! We’ll be back at The Finsbury on 8th November with a super exciting Secret Headliner, plus Cozy Slippers (all the way from Seattle!), Gold Baby and Macadamia Sluts. Not to be missed!
