VIDEO PREMIERE: Kadija Kamara – ‘Running In The Name Of The Game’

Sun, sea and shimmering sequin trousers, alt-soul artist Kadija Kamara has shared her video for single ‘Running In The Name Of The Game’ and the visuals are as warm and vibrant as the track itself. Taken from her EP Nothing Left To Lose released earlier this year, Kadija’s positivity and strength shine through in her work, and this latest offering is no exception.

Following on from previous single ‘Eyes On You’, Kadija explains the ethos behind the visuals for ‘Running In The Name Of The Game’: “It reflects my reality of playing the game in life/the rat race. I would say that this song is my daily motivation. I listen to it to pick myself up and keep going. I hope others can play this when they need a boost too. It’s really about not giving up”.

To date, Kadija’s accomplishments include winning the MTV Iggy Artist Of The Week poll (voted for by readers) and being awarded funding for her Artist Development Programme by PRS. She’s collaborated with Joey Negro, Zed Bias and sang backing vocals for Zara McFarlane on Later With Jools Holland.

As well as focusing on her own solo career, Kadija curates LADY LIVE events at The Finsbury Pub alongside house promoters Lost In The Manor. The night focuses on showcasing female musical talent. She hosted her first LADY Festival at Pop Brixton in October last year too, proving she’s dedicated to pushing girls to the front when it comes to the underground and commercial music scenes.

PREMIERE: Host – ‘b4me’

“Cut your hair but not your ties,” advises Irish artist Host on her new track ‘b4me’, which we’re premiering exclusively on Get In Her Ears today. The song is an infectious slice of electro-pop that navigates the tricky territory between being in love with the idea of being loved, and not being able to reciprocate that desire.

Following on from her debut single ‘Goodbye’, Host has spent most of her year writing, recording and producing music alone. ‘b4me’ is another sharply produced offering from the newcomer, who had this to say about her new track: “Usually, like many other artists, I write my songs based off an exaggerated version of the truth; but ‘b4me’ is far from fiction. I produced the song fully before adding a lyrical element to the music and for me, that alone spoke volumes, but sometimes you just have to speak your thoughts aloud to make them fully register”.

LISTEN: A N N A V R – ‘Under The Sand’

Elegant and intricate, Berlin based avant-pop artist ANNAVR has shared her new single ‘Under The Sand’. The track is taken from her debut EP I: Hallucination, which is the first of a 3-part EP trilogy the artist is planning – II: Vibration and III: Salvation – which are due to be released later this year.

Recorded in both Berlin and London, I: Hallucination is ANNAVR’s musical exploration of past romance in a futuristic musical context. “The title is an acknowledgement for a state that describes somewhere between the biggest possible relief, and the most terrible unfulfilled longing,” ANNAVR explains. “I don’t mean it in any way associated to drugs. It’s more like I am so open to things, my senses are so overwhelmingly awake, that most of the time I can feel like a battery that is overcharged.”

Praised by Lauren Laverne, Don Letts, The Fader, i-D Magazine and Interview Magazine, it’s easy to see why tracks like ‘Under The Sand’ are seeping in to a variety of musical consciences.

Track Of The Day: Hockeysmith – ‘Holy War’

From Cornwall to Copenhagen, Hockeysmith‘s unusual electronic offerings are inspired by rave subculture, trip-hop, noise rock & shoe gaze. Originally a duo, Front-woman Annie is now working independently, and ‘Holy War’ is the first taste of her solo efforts.

Atmospheric synths, poppy percussion and laid back vocals combine to make ‘Holy War’ an intriguing listen. After taking up residence in a converted bus earlier in the year, it’s clear that Hockeysmith’s unusual surroundings have informed her new sound. Her acquaintances in Copenhagen – working with friends and family of the Escho label (Iceage, Smerz) – have also had an impact on her musical output.
