Track Of The Day: Sextile – ‘Spun’

Prepare to lose your head to Sextile‘s latest track ‘Spun’. The L.A based duo have announced the release of their brand new EP titled 3, which is set to drop on September 14th via Felte, marking the start of their European tour.

‘Spun’ is two minutes of abrasive synths and punk-like vocals, buzzing with Sextile’s trademark electronic intensity. After numerous lineup changes since their inception in 2015, the now two-piece comprised of Brady Keehn and Melissa Scaduto have shifted toward a minimalist approach, favouring synths over guitars. Their new EP was recorded in Los Angeles at their home and practice space using a KORG MS-10, a sequencer, a Fender Stratocaster, a LinnDrum, and various percussion instruments.

With a “sonic palette that mirrors the chaos of the modern industrial era” Sextile are punk in their vision and trailblazing in their sound and performance. Listen to ‘Spun’ below and follow the band on Facebook for more updates.

Track Of The Day: Peach Club – ‘Boy In A Band’

I first became aware of Norwich Riot Grrrls Peach Club seeing them support The Tuts at The George Tavern a couple of years back, and have been pretty much blown away by everything I’ve heard from them since. Now, following the release of their second EP, Cherry Baby, earlier this year, they’ve released a powerfully seething new single.

Delivering an important message with a tongue-in cheek wit, ‘Boy In A Band’ is a gritty, raging attack on those ‘boys in bands’ that we’ve all come across; those disgusting guys who use their self-proclaimed ‘fame’ to take advantage of young women.

With a raw ferocity, thrashing hooks and driving beats, ‘Boy In A Band’ builds with a frenzied energy to a riotous anthem, blasting into the ears with a racing sense of urgency. And rightly so. We need voices like Peach Club’s now more than ever; a voice that gives motivation and inspiration to girls and women to speak out and be heard in order to prevent the damaging actions of certain boys in bands continuing to be swept under the carpet (or even accepted as the norm) within the music industry.

Channelling anger into a wonderful outpouring of raucous energy, and with exceptionally powerful lyrics like “Why don’t we go back to my tour van? Doesn’t matter that you’re a little girl and that I’m a man! / I’ll take advantage, I’ll make you feel small
and then I’ll deny it all…” , ‘Boy In A Band’ is the song we all need to hear this summer.

And don’t miss Peach Club headlining for our Blogtober event at The Finsbury on 12th October – we can’t wait!

WATCH: Valeska Rautenberg – ‘I Am Weak And So Are You’

Berlin artist Valeska Rautenberg has released her latest EP Aerial Minds, the first of a series of four EPs dedicated to one of the four elements. To accompany the record, Valeska has shared a delicate set of visuals for track ‘I Am Weak And So Are You’, and through flashes of red and blue she ruminates on vulnerability.

Valeska has worked as a musician, producer, teacher, composer & voice-over actress, but began releasing her own music again in 2017. Speaking about her new EP project, Valeska explains: “The EPs are like parts of an equation, like puzzle pieces to me. Every song is a facet. An element. But whole on their own. Let’s start with air: all four songs, though they vary in genre, explore the EP’s main theme; the element air. Capturing the intangible, ethereal and unthinkable in their own very unique ways. It gets political, deals with loss, falls in love with human weaknesses and much more”

‘I Am Weak And So Are You’ is the third single Valeska has released from her Aerial Minds EP, alongside ‘Midnight Children’ and ‘All Is Forgotten’. Her ambition and vision are sure to take her to where she wants to be. Watch the video for the latest single below and follow Valeska on Facebook for more updates.

WATCH: HAVVK – ‘Glass’

Back and with a newly amended moniker, GIHE faves HAVVK (formally HAWK) have marked their rebrand with the re-release of their bewitching single ‘Glass’.

Originally written in 2015, and released in the run up to the Irish Marriage Equality Referendum, ‘Glass’ addresses themes of conflict and resolution. Completely remastered with help from the awesome Rocky O’Reilly, it’s filled with twinkling hooks as the majestic splendour of front woman Julie’s celestial vocals will captivate in an instant. Oozing an eerie subtle power and magnetising grace, it shows HAVVK at their most exquisite – doing what they do best; combining activism with their unique musical prowess.

Of the meaning behind the song, Julie explains:

“For us, the meaning of the song became connected with the collected voice that was rising in Ireland, especially among young people, in standing up for equality. We’re re-releasing the track as it’s always been really special to us, and with the Repeal vote getting pushed through this year, it feels like more and more people are seeing the impact of voicing their support for human rights.”
